Table Tennis at the Duke of Wellington

I did try to play table tennis a few months ago, but my eyesight wasn’t good enough.

Tonight though, I went down the Duke of Wellington in the Balls Pond Road and played a couple of games for charity.  I was a lot better.

I also had some very good Wye Valley asparagus with a poached duck egg on top.  I did have a chat with the manager and they know their gluten-free.

The strange thing about the pub is that it is a few doors away from where some my ancestors lived in the 1850s.  I just wonder if, I’m not the first member of my family to drink in the pub. I’m certainly the first to play table tennis.

Can You Say This to German Guests?

A friend looks after a house that is rented to tourists.

Whilst showing some Germans around, who had booked the house for a week she said, “The coal is in the bunker!”  She compounded it by following it with “The baker in the village is Mr.Ovens!”

A Call From 08000562422

I had a strange call from this number on my mobile phone.  It told me my address and said it was from EDF Energy and asked if I was responsible for paying the bill, in which case I was to press 1.  If I wasn’t I was to press 2.  I hung up, as EDF Energy are not my supplier and anyway I pay by direct debit to another company, who did me a few favours when I moved in and were very professional.  That’s not to say they are not professional too, as they have dealt with the writs sent to previous non-payers at this address with no hassle to me.

But I smelt a rat, as I have nothing to do with EDF Energy.

I checked the number on the Internet and this is what I found.  Some items mention the number as a possible telepest.

I did try to phone EDF Energy, but their call centre was busy.  This was one of the reasons, they didn’t get my business in the first place, as I couldn’t get through.

So if you get a call from this number, I suggest you do the sensible thing and hang up.  I can’t find anything on the Internet to link it to EDF Energy.

What worries me is that someone had got my mobile phone number and linked it to my correct address.  The only people who have that link are credit card companies, my bank and companies like John Lewis, IKEA and Dixons. I’m not accusing anybody, but it strikes me that there is a leak somewhere. But then these companies have my landline and I’ve never had such a call on that number.

Clarke Says Prison is a Waste of Money

On Saturday this was the lead story on the front page of The Times. It was also in the Guardian.

He is so right!

I first met a prison governor at University in the 1960s and he said the same thing.

So why if this has been generally known for many years, do we still lock up so many people for long periods of time?

Is it just that politicians are so frightened of the tabloids and the vengeance tendency who read them?

Perhaps we should have a referendum on capital punishment, corporal punishment and a three-crimes-and-its-life law?  All those who voted in favour would have a 90% rate of Income Tax to pay for the policies.

Food Use-By Dates

There are reports that food use-by dates are to be changed to cut food waste.

I am a coeliac and am possibly lactose intolerant.  For this reason I’ve changed to goat’s milk.

One of the benefits compared to cow’s milk, is that a one litre bottle, lasts a full three weeks and never goes off, which is a great help, as I live by myself. I’ve a little bit left in the current bottle, but the use by date is April 12th.

So I’m healthier and save money!
