How To Get Cancer And Pneumonia
I t0ok this picture on the top of the North Terminal at Gatwick, as I walked into Departures.
Some people never learn. Or even want to!
On a serious note, I wonder how many have given up smoking this winter, as they don’t like being banished to the cold from their workplace or home.
The Trip Out To Budapest
I’ve just returned from Budapest by train, after flying out on Monday, the 8th. I outlined it here.
I took the Overground, as I indicated I would and it was easy. I also found out, that all trains for Gatwick Airport leave from platform 13 at Clapham Junction station.
This makes things easy to remember. Unfortunately, we were delayed due to someone falling on the line.
The flight out was uneventful and my only complaint, was the uncomfortable seat. but that’s really down to me, rather than the aircraft.
Travelling Very Light
On my trip today, I’m travelling as light as I can, as obviously I’ve got to carry everything.
I shall be away for five nights, but I can of course buy more stuff on the move.
Clothes consist of three pairs of pants, a vest, a shirt and a pair of socks.
Tissues for my nose.
Hairbrush and toothbrush.
EatNakd bars.
My drugs in film cansters
Gluten-free menu cards in Hungarian and Czech.
Passport
Memo Book for notes.
Sudokus to solve.
Euros.
A voucher to buy the Times on Saturday
My Samsung Tab 2
Itinerary and tickets
Chargers for my Samsung, phone and camera. Why won’t one suffice for all?
There are some things I’m not taking.
Shoes or boots, as I’m wearing those.
Toothpaste and deodorant. These will be bought at Gatwick after security, so I avoid the farce with plastic bags.
London Is My Gymnasium
The weather is better today, so I did a trip round the various construction and other sites that I keep a watch on.
The pictures are in order and show how I went to the Excel to see the CrossRail progress, then over the cable-car to Greenwich. I then took the Jubilee line to Stratford and the DLR to Pudding Mill Lane station, again to look at CrossRail. I also had a coffee and some delicious gluten-free cake at the ViewTube, before coming back to Highbury and Islington station, where I did a bit of shopping.
I tend to use these trips as long walks with the occasional climb up and down stairs to get fit. I found that on the cruise stair-climbing with a rail on the left, was good for that side of my body.
Dalston Junction Station Gets Free Wi-Fi
My local station now has free wi-fi.
Not that I had my tablet with me this morning!
Is Derby Reading’s Little Sibling?
I was at Derby on Saturday and took these pictures of the station and a couple of the old engines hanging about.
The concept of the station is very similar to that of Reading, that I visited earlier in the week. The bridge is narrower and there are no escalators to the platforms.
As Derby pre-dates Reading by a few years, you could argue that Reading is Derby’s bigger sibling.
But it’s a good design nonetheless! Like Reading it has good facilities on the wide platforms.
The big diesel is 37425, which is a Class 37 and although owned by the Class 37 Locomotive Group, it appears to be pulling some form of engineering train for Network Rail.
The other diesel engine is a Class 57. Does DCR stand for Derby College something?, as the college is behind the engine.
It Was Blue Skies, Sun And An Unlikely Win At Pride Park
The train got to Derby station in just over an hour and a half and then it was a short walk to the ground.
You walk through, an office park to the ground and it is all pretty easy going. Although a map or two and some more finger posts would be a good idea. For the first time this year, we saw a ground bathed in sunshine.
Derby County had the bulk of the play by 57% to 43%, but despite this, Ipswich won 1-0.
The goal incidentally was the sort you read about in stories, but see rarely in real life. In the last minute of added time, at the end of the match, Carlos Edwards received the ball in the centre circle and runs towards the Derby goal, before unleashing an unstoppable shot from twenty-five metres out.
Mick McCarthy summed up the match like this.
We burgled it. I thought I heard the sirens and I said ‘shut the doors, the police are coming!
I would add that as my ticket to get in cost me £17.50 on top of £29 to get there by train in First Class, I can’t say that my day out wasn’t good value.
I Brought My Piano To A Station And Someone Asked Me To Play
I took this photograph at St. Pancras station this morning.
It would appear it’s a street piano and that the music and the musicians are well liked.
Bus-Only Tunnels Under Cambridge
This story popped up, when I displayed the previous one about the lorry on the busway.
i know Cambridge well, and as a study in the City showed in 2008, the concept might just work.
Cambridge is a traffic nightmare at the moment and will only get worse, unless something is done.
I suppose, a cross-city tram, powered as in Seville or Nice is another possibility.
Some very radical thinking is needed.
