My Usual Sunday Circuit
For four Sundays now, I’ve done a circuitous route to Canary Wharf, using the DLR, the Emirates Air-Line and the Jubilee line. Although today was the second competition day in the Olympics, I did it again today. These pictures were taken on the way to Royal Victoria Docks station for the cable-car.
it’s one of best parts of the DLR for photography and I sat on the south or right side of the train looking towards Canary Wharf and the Dome.
How To Not Lose A Wallet
I should say that I keep one credit card, my rail passes and my Freedom Pass in a little folder that I keep in my pocket, so I can just pull it out to touch the various Oyster readers on buses, trains and tubes.
On Saturday, I managed to lose the folder on a bus, as my nose was running so much, that I must have dragged it out with a tissue, which I was using every minute or so.
I’d just cancelled the credit card and reported the Freedom Pass as lost, when the bus driver phoned to say, he’d got the folder and would take it to the depot at the end of his shift at 19:00. He had got the number from a card I keep in the folder containing my e-mail address and mobile number.
So I went to the garage at Leyton at the time he said and after a few minutes he turned up and gave me the folder. So job done! Stagecoach didn’t even have a charity box for a reward, but I rectified that on-line to one of the charities I support.
By Monday, my Freedom Pass was reactivated and then yesterday, I got a new AMEX card.
So we may complain about service, but I can’t fault anybody here.
Where Are The People?
I went up to Islington Green this morning to see the Olympic Torch Relay at Islington Green. The bus was virtually empty on the way up and totally so on the way back.
It was like having a personal large red taxi.
Ill Designed For Humans
That’s how I read this advert on the side of a bus.
I tried one of these S III phones, as Samsung had a booth at the Angel and I found them unusable, as I only ever use a phone with my right hand, holding it in my palm and dialling with a thumb nail.
So here’s one human, for whom the phone was ill-designed. Give me my Nokia 6310i anytime.
I don’t think too, that I’m the only person, who uses a phone one-handed.
The New Buses Are Back
I saw two at the Angel today and actually took one home.
Note that every one is now advertising a London show. They only seemed to disappear for the rehearsal of the Olympic Opening Ceremony. I suspect each one is advertising a particular show and will the cast of each be getting out and doing a turn. After all London is the theatre capital of the world.
An Offer I Must Refuse
This was the window of Waitrose in Islington.
As I don’t have a car, it’s an offer I must refuse.
Crazy Golf at the Olympics?
I took this picture yesterday morning from the Emirates Air-Line.
It looks like a one hole floating golf course for the Olympics. But then golf isn’t going to be part of the Olympics this year, although it is to be added in the future.
That is a disgrace, as golf isn’t a sport, but a pastime played by rich men in diamond check jumpers.
I suspect it could be something to do with the Olympic Opening Ceremony, as it was heading down river towards the River Lee and Stratford.
The New Little Waitrose at Highbury and Islington
It opened yesterday and I was impressed.
The only thing I couldn’t find of my staple purchases was the Waitrose goat’s milk. But surprisingly they had the Genius bread and the Genius fruit bread, which is rather difficult to get elsewhere. There was also gluten-free biscuits and cakes.
It will be a great help for me, as often I come out of Highbury and Islington station after coming home on the Victoria line. So at least I won’t starve.
I was impressed, and the average coeliac could do a lot worse round here. If anybody is going to the Olympics on the London Overground, it will be a good place to pick up a picnic. You could even go round the corner and eat it in Highbury Fields, which is rather a smart little park.
