The RSPB get Everywhere!
I was reading The Times this morning and they have a slightly tongue-in-check report on the Erotica exhibition at Olympia.
They were rather surprised that the RSPB were there with a stand. But as their spokesman said, “We’re an inclusive organisation. We’re meeting our new market halfway!”
They’ve probably done the right thing, as it says the average spend is £200 a person!
The Problems of Moving
It’s only now, that I’m seeing the sort of problems that I will have with the move.
I already know that a lot of my furniture won’t fit, as although the new house has three bedrooms, it’s got fitted wardrobes and a low ceiling height.
I’ll be getting rid of a classic dresser, a table that seats fourteen and four Victorian wardrobes. One is so awful, you can imagine it being delivered to the house after the wife (or husband for that matter) has bought it at auction and getting a response like “Darling! You actually paid good money for that!” The other three are quite nice, but they are not the sort to put in a modern house.
But it is the mass of paintings and posters, C and I collected over the years. I just won’t have the wall space for them!
I’ve also got enough framed family photographs to cover the outside of the Albert Hall.
I’ll just have to be ruthless.
A Christmas Present for the Woman in Your Life!
I had a well-educated lady round for lunch today and she saw the book below on the counter.
Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics (California Studies in the History of Science)
In my view it is one of the best reads, if you are interested in science between the wars and especially in Germany. It also tells the story of one of the greatest women scientists of all time; Lise Meitner.
An Incident at the County Court
This was a letter to one of C’s colleagues, who was defending a fan with a serious illness, who had a nose bleed and spread it alkl over the County Court in Ipswich
The barrister in question is now a judge and does not seem to have suffered any ill effects from the incident.
A Grand Muck Heap Competition
This was organuised in about 1981 or so to raise funds for the Easton Harriers.
Feel free to copy this idea, but give any money to a suitable charity. My preference would be one supportring research into pancreatic cancer.
A New Type of Football
Yesterday evening I watched the FA Cup replay between Ebbsfleet United and AFC Wimbledon. Both are very much fans-supported clubs, with Ebbsfleet being owned by the on-line community MyFootballClub and AFC Wimbledon having emerged after the transfer of Wimbledon to Milton Keynes.
Will we be seeing more clubs like these? It could be possible that next season AFC Wimbledon are in the Football League.
One thing that was different, was that there was a pitch-side advert for the Samaritans at the match.
Giving It To a Museum
Today I contacted The Centre for Computing History in Haverhill and later they collected some of my boxes of software. They may also take some of my old hardware, like a DecWriter, a very early and powerful HP Vectra and the Artemis 1000 system.
They certainly need help in all forms.
Thowing Away the Past
I’m having big clear out, prior to moving. The skip arrives today and masses of stuff is going in it. At the moment, I’ve got boxes and boxes of rubbish waiting for it.
Do I find moving stressful? Not as stressful as living in this house without being able to drive!
An Edinburgher Makes Peace with Glasgow
Gavin Mackay successfully makes sausages in South Korea. He had a bit of a problem with the seasoning and eventually found one in Glasgow. This he admitted is very unusual for a man from Edinburgh, as ne’er the twain shall agree!
It’s Gibbon Time
It was good to see the Goodies in all their glory on Saturday. C used to like them and was always amused by the references to gibbons, as were the children.
