A More Than Standard 8
It’s funny how names or phrases trigger things in your memory. The name on this picture for a start.
Sandilands was the driver of a Standard 8, that used to race in the 1960s or 1970s against the best racing saloon cars of his day. The car was referred to a couple of times as a More Than Standard 8. I can’t find any reference to it on the Internet.
The Overground Gets It Right
Everybody knocks the trains, but few knock the London Overground.
But with figures like these, a lot of moans are tackled before they start. So the train i got this morning was crowded, but I got a seat at Whitechapel.
A Dreadful Night
It’s raining hard here and I’ll be staying in for most of the night.
I did try to go up to the Angel to see if I could get some fish to make one of my favourite suppers, but a 30 bus turned up first, so I thought I’d try the littleWaitrose at Highbury and Islington. But they had power problems and the tills weren’t working. So I just bought one item for supper.
At least it was reduced to £2,99. As you can see it’s a bit battered, but only in the damaged sense!
I do have some strawberries, so with a drink, it won’t be a bad supper.
Eton’s Gangnam Style
Students at Eton College have created a viral hit based on Psy’s Gangnam Style. The Guardian says it’s a bit cringe-worthy in this piece, but surely it shows that the power of the Internet is there for us all to harness.
The British Superhero
James Bond is everywhere at the moment.
Why is James the archetypal British superhero, whereas those created on the other side of the Atlantic are very often non-human?
I can’t think of a British superhero in the style of Superman say, but going back to John Buchan‘s, Richard Hannay and before, there have been quite a few literary characters in the style of Bond.
Islington Goes For 20 mph Speed Limit
This was voted on last night by Islington Council according to this article on the BBC.
I hope it sorts out the problems of accidents, but many seem to be caused by drivers not respecting lights. Try crossing the road outside Highbury and Islington station at busy times.
Islington’s real problem is that there is too much traffic, trying to drive down too few roads.
SNP Changes Defence Policy
The SNP appears to be changing its defence policy. It all goes to illustrate the difficulties they will face on so many issues.
I’m not against nuclear weapons, but with the threat from a large superpower unlikely, I don’t think we need something like Trident. We perhaps need some some of retaliation weapon like submarine-launched nuclear missiles.
Presidential Pink
At least there’s one thing the two candidates wives in the United States election agree on. Wearing pink is a good idea.
Scottish Time
There was a cheeky letter in the Times yesterday saying that if the Scots got independence, would the rest of the UK be able to do what we want to do with the clocks and move to a time zone compatible with most of the EU?
