Cameron’s Worst Nightmare

Seeing the performance of the Labour Party today, I wouldn’t think that he would be worried much. Especially, as opinion polls seem to show that the public don’t trust Labour with the economy.

Much of what happens to the economy will happen anyway, as large job creation will be by big companies, who will do it based on their needs. There will also be a lot by the average people, who generally read the economy better than the politicians do, and act when they see gaps.

But what happens across the pond in November, will have a large effect on what happens in this country.

It’s probably true to say, that David Cameron and Barack Obama are very similar, although from different backgrounds.  If Obama should remain US President, then business will be very much as before.

But Mitt Romney, a man who is the most religious US Presidential candidate in some time, would I think create problems for any British Prime Minister, if he got elected.

If for instance, the United States got involved in an Israeli-led attack on Iran, would we be capable of staying out of it.  The majority of the British public would want no part of it, of that there is no doubt.  And I suspect Cameron doesn’t either! But who knows what will happen, if Israel attacked Iran.

This is just one area, where Romney is downright dangerous.

And a world stirred up by Romney, would give a tremendous boost for the opposition in the UK. Especially one, who could play the Hate Romney card with impunity.

Let’s hope the American voters are sensible enough to send Romney packing.

Who Needs 4G?

I was one of the first users of a mobile phone, many years ago. Today, the BBC are reporting a big meeting about the next generation, 4G

But I have not even got onto 3G, just staying with a good old-fashioned phone; a Nokia 6310i, that gives me text messages and calls.

The only thing, it cant do that I need, is put up a skeleton topic on my blog for editing later when I get home. If I needed to, I could tweet from the phone.

4G is only a way to get more money out of the gullible.

How Labour Claim They Will Kick Start Growth

It’s informative to put two of the BBC’s stories about the Labour conference together.  Here’s the first paragraph of the main story.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls is calling for a two-year stamp duty holiday to help kick-start growth – paid for by the sale of 4G mobile frequencies.

And then you read what Nick Robinson says in this piece.

What, if anything, does Labour’s latest economic announcement tell us? Some argue almost nothing. I believe something rather more than that.

This is the case for the prosecution: Ed Balls is only telling us what he would do now if he was chancellor, not what he will do if he becomes chancellor in 2015.

By then, the proceeds of the 4G sale will not be his to spend – the money will already have been accounted for by his predecessor. The promise to increase capital spending by £3bn – if it survives into Labour’s manifesto – is also meaningless, goes the argument, unless you know what the baseline is going to be ie £3bn on top of what.

Thus, Labour is merely coming up with an eye-catching announcement which confirms what we already know – Ed Balls would spend a bit more than George Osborne if he were in office now.

That all sounds like they’re spinning again.

Basically, it’s just a load of old Balls.

The Comeback To End All Comebacks

Europe’s win in the Ryder Cup is being celebrated as one of the great comebacks.

It is a great comeback, but in many ways it pales into insignificance compared to that amazing, cold and wet Saturday afternoon on the 21st December 1957, when Charlton Athletic beat Huddersfield Town seven-six at the Valley after being five-one down, with only ten men. It must be one of the few Second Division matches of the era to have its own Wikipedia page.

Reading that Wikipedia page, you find that Huddersfield were managed by Bill Shankly and he had rested a young Denis Law. Shankly later said about the match.

one of the most amazing games I have ever seen

And he’d seen a few matches!

A Cheeky Cough And A Drag

As I walked to the train today an ambulance pulled up on the other side of the road. It didn’t appear to be in too much hurry, as one of the paramedics got out and had a quick cough and a drag, before going to look for the patient.

Cyclehoops By Selfridges

I found these two cyclehoops by Selfridges today.

One seemed to have had a bicycle part-nicked from it, bt the other was ready to do its job.

The CrossRail TBMs At Limmo

I took these pictures today of the two CrossRail tunnel boring machines; Elizabeth and Victoria, at Limmo today from the DLR just before the Beckton branch gets to Canning Town station.

If you want to see them, you’ll probably have to be quick, as they’ll be dropped into the hole there soon.

Another Coloured Police Horse

South Yorkshire Police gave the horses an exercise, whilst Town were in Barnsley.

As you can see, one is a very striking coloured horse, which the officer told me proudly was one of a matched pair. It certainly proves the odd Suffolk phrase.

A bad horse is always a bad colour, but a good horse is always a good one.

Usually, that was said in respect to chesnut mares, but then in Suffolk, chesnuts are always liked because of the Suffolk horse, which only come in that colour.

In Style To Sheffield And Then This!

Barnsley must be one of the biggest towns in England without a direct service to London.  I was in a very comfortable First Class seat to Sheffield and then this.

In Style To Sheffield And Then This!

We have more comfortable and decidedly newer trains on the Overground.

The name of these Class 142‘s is even crap, as they’re called Pacers.  They should be called Crawlers or Rattlers. I suppose the only compensation was that the last bit of the journey took about fifteen minutes.
