A Most Annoying Advert

I can’t see the television that well in 2-D because of my eye-sight, so one of the most annoying adverts is one for LG proclaiming the virtues of watching 3-D television with someone else which also grates.

So LG has just joined my list of companies whose products I don’t buy!

Is that what advertising is supposed to do? Annoy your possible customers!

When is someone going to produce advert free television? I suppose it’s called the BBC, but what I want to see at the moment is on Sky!

Who Are West Brom’s Sponsor?

I’m just watching West Brom play Newcastle and their sponsor appears to be 247 999, arranged in two rows of three digits. Looking closely, you can just see 0800 in smaller numbers above them.

I thought it was probably some new on-line gambling company and it was only when I checked that I found it was the free phone number for  Homeserve, who as far as I know are a perfectly legitimate company.

Gluten-Free Television

I don’t ever take my television with adverts, unless I actually really want to watch the program.  So of the major programs on ITV like X-Factor, Downton Abbey and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, I’ve not seen a single episode.

Today my son came up the M11 and he was watching a channel showing endless repeats of Frazier, which is a series of which I’ve never watched a single minute. Nearly all of the adverts were for products that I couldn’t eat, except for one for the Halifax Bank, for which I have no need.

I actually wonder whether these adverts have any positive effect for the companies involved as many households would actually be turned off by them.  There was one advert for Iceland, that really convinced never to go near the shop, if all their customers were like those shown.

I Want to Watch Football Not Adverts!

I have just turned over from Radio 5’s build-up to the football to ITV’s coverage.

But what did I get?

Five minutes of adverts!

Grr! When somebody makes an advert filter that works, I’ll buy it! But I don’t buy any of the products they advertise anyway!

When I move, I’ll find a solution.  Perhaps I need a TV that can switch from it’s Freeview tuner to a cable/Sky one at the touch of a button!

Gluten Free Goes Mainstream

There has been an announcement that Genius gluten-free bread is going to spend £3million on a television advertising campaign for their products.

It’s even got a mention in The Sun.

I probably wont see the advert, but it will be interesting to see if it raises the awareness of coeliac disease and gluten-free products.

As to their gluten-free bread, I usually have a loaf in the bread-bin for sandwiches and toast. So I can’t say that I’m unhappy with the product.

Dr. Chris Steele

Dr. Chris Steele is a TV doctor.  I’ll admit I’d never heard of him before, as he’s on ITV and I try not to watch any program with adverts.

But he has now been diagnosed with coeliac disease as the Daily Mail reports.

I’ve tried to put a comment on the web site, but I can’t seem to get registered.  So I’ll post it here for now.

Dr. Steele’s case is typical. For some reason, doctors miss diagnosing coeliac disease all of the time. I know of a GP with coeliac children, whose husband family have coeliac history, who missed her own coeliac disease. So it is not easy to get right.

In my case, I was not diagnosed until 55, seven years ago. My symptoms were joint pains, chronic dandruff, extreme tiredness, gall stones, migraines, depression, wind, diarrhoea, mood swings etc. etc. But if you trace my family tree and those who probably had coeliac disease, you will notice that no women in the family have had any children. Could it be that the low B12 levels associated with coeliac disease, mean that it is difficult to conceive or carry a baby to full term?

As to eating out, Dr. Steele should try Italy. Just say you are a coeliachai and you get gluten-free pasta in many restaurants. We should follow the Italians and treat the disease very seriously, as how much does the misdiagnosis cost the NHS.

I very pleased of this for two reasons.

  1. Every celebrity who is diagnosed with coeliac disease helps publicise the disease.
  2. His experience shows that when you have been diagnosed the cure is simple and you get better pretty quickly.

So my advice would be if you think you have any of the symptoms of coeliac disease, try a gluten-free diet.  It might not work, but it wouldn’t do you any harm.

Dubai’s Annoying Adverts on Channel 4 Racing

The title says it all.  They are so annoying and fully justify my rule of not watching any programme with adverts unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I’ve just created this poll to see how they work.
