My Unused Sunhat
I took a sunhat with me and it wasn’t used.
It really wasn’t expected that I would have ten days holiday, with only a few minutes of strong sun.
Dressing For Dinner
Three nights on the cruise were black tie.
I wore a new shirt and the result seemed acceptable. Well to me at least. Note the safety pin in the trousers. I never remove them after clothes have done a trip to the dry cleaners, as you never know when you might need them, as I did in this post!
Laura Craik Would Have Pleased C
Laura Craik’s fashion article in The Times magazine yesterday would have been right up C’s street, as it was all about colour. C was a barrister and despite this she avoided black as much as she could. Her uniform colour was often dark blue and often her only black was thick tights. I don’t think she actually had a matching set of black bra and briefs though! She certainly never in the forty years I knew her, ever owned a black swimsuit, coat or evening dress.
She always said that colour, helped her to stand out and she’s not the first professional woman, who’s told me that!
But as C would joke, the black she did have, meant she had no problems at funerals.
My University Scarf Rides Again
I’ve started wearing my Liverpool University Engineering scarf again in this weather.
You don’t seem to see as many university scarves as you did, when I went to University in the 1960s.
But in this weather it’s very warm.
A Difficult Man
Yesterday the zip in the front of my North Face padded jacket went. It was ideal for me, as it was warm and had a large pocket, where I could put all the stuff that I carry, like gloves and my Samsung tablet.
So I went to the shop where I bought it to get another one. But they have now deleted the inside pocket.
What Grade A Tosser decided that?
But the shop said, that everybody seems to have removed the inside pockets.
To me they are one of the most important areas, when I chose a new jacket.
Why do I always seem to be out of step with what designers want to give us?
Am I right or just plain difficult?
Keeping Warm Outside
I have given up on the control system of my central heating and now use the damaged Mark 1 brain of a Control Engineer to switch the system on and off to keep the temperature where I want it. I have a nifty meter from Maplin’s, which gives me exact temperature and humidity.
Outside in the cold, I’ve turned to wearing my classic 1960s Liverpool University Engineering scarf. It’s all wool and I suspect, it’s rarely been cleaned, but it doesn’t smell too bad. Strangely, this morning, the BBC are at Hainsworth in Pudsey. They’re doing fairly well considering the recession, by selling cloth all over the world. They still make the all-wool cloth for university scarves like mine. They’ve also just said, that South Africa is the biggest market for blankets in the world.
I’ve also just ordered myself a cashmere football scarf in Ipswich Town’s colours from a company called Savile Rogue. If that doesn’t fix the weather nothing will.
Not What To Wear Today!
I saw this lady on the DLR at Custom House station.
Luckily she’s only an advert!
Otherwise she’d have frozen stiff.
The Dignity Of A Sari
On Saturday, I was on a 30 bus at Highbury Corner and an Indian lady of about sixty or so got off the bus and walked up the road.
She was obviously going somewhere special, as she was immaculately dressed in what looked to my untrained eye an expensive sari. She was also carrying a big bunch of flowers, so perhaps she was going to visit a friend or family for lunch.
She had this aura of dignity, that I have observed so many times in India, with women dressed in a similar way.
You don’t see Indian women dressed this way so often where I live.
The first time, I came across a lady in a sari, was when my mother had an operation for varicose veins in the 1950s. The doctor then was a very beautiful Indian lady, who used to do her ward rounds in a sari. Both my parents incidentally, thought it perfectly normal.
I also remember, when I used to work at ICI in Welwyn Garden City, that one of the team I worked with; Manju, occasionally came to work in a sari on important days, or perhaps when someone was leaving.
You don’t seem to see Indian women in the workplace these days dressed in a sari.
Presidential Pink
At least there’s one thing the two candidates wives in the United States election agree on. Wearing pink is a good idea.
Has Gwyneth Got The Zip Undone?
There’s something strange about the picture of Gwyneth Paltrow in this article in the Standard.
Look under her left arm, at the cut out in the dress. It looks like she’s got the zip open. Or is it one of those straps to put the dress on a hanger?
