Between Exeter St. Davids And Exeter Central Stations
Exeter St. Davids and Exeter Central are important stations in Exeter.
- Many services call at both stations.
- The two stations are about five minutes apart by train.
- It takes fifteen to twenty minutes to walk between the two stations.
- Exeter Central station is in the centre of the city and an easy walk to stops and restaurants.
- Exeter St. Davis station is the junction station, where lines to and from the city meet.
The problem is that it is a very stiff walk up the hill from Exeter St. Davids station to Exeter Central station.
What eases matters, is that every few minutes, a train connects the lower St. Davids to the higher Central.
These pictures document a trip between the two stations.
Note the quality of the trains.
When staying in Exeter, if you come by train, make sure you pick a hotel at the best station for your visit.
I stayed in the Premier Inn by the station and met a couple, who were using the Mercure, which they didn’t fault.

My ticket between the two main Exeter stations, cost £1.50 for an Anytime Day Return, but you can’t help thinking that the various train companies working in the area are looking at ways of improving the ticketing.
The fact that First Group is now involved in the two main franchises must help.
But as a visitor, who understands ticketing, I found my £6.60 Devon Day Rangers more than adequate.
Las Palmas Wakes Up
I rose early and took these pictures along the the promenade by Las Canteras Beach.
I always get up early and it was good to walk along the promenade.
Note the three restaurants where I had a good gluten–free meal.

I also had a good tuna salad at Max Bread, so if you’re coeliac or gluten-free, you shouldn’t starve, unless you’re exceedimgly fussy.
Other points to note.
- The Hotel Reina Isabel looked to be a good place to stay because of its location.
- The beach was very clean.
- The promenade was a good place to walk, with no pavement problems.
- There were plenty of places serving good coffee and ices.
I would certainly return, but try the Hotel Reina Isabel next time.

At least I got some time sitting in the sun.
First Impressions Of Split
My hotel was in the middle of Diocletian’s Palace, the Roman palace that forms about half the old town of Split.
I took these pictures on my first morning in the town.
It really is an unusual place, which is a cross between modern city centre and Roman palace.
If you stay in the town, try to stay in the old part
Beware Of Hotels In The Old City Of Dubrovnik
I took these pictures of my hotel room in the Old City of Dubrovnik.
I get the impression, reading some of the things said about hotels in Dubrovnik, that this is not the only hotel with a nice, spacious rooms and a staircase not for those of a nervous disposition.
From Leeds To Burnley Manchester Road
I’d gone to Burnley for the football via Leeds, as the West Coast Main Line seemed to be partly closed and I also wanted to take a look at the recently-opened Apperley Bridge station, which I wrote about in The New Apperley Bridge Station.
The trains across the Pennines on Saturdays are an hourly service at xx:08 from York to Blackpool North, that calls at New Pudsey, Bradford Interchange, Halifax and Hebden Bridge, on the section of route I would travel.
The train was busy and I was unable to get any decent pictures, but my 12:08 departure dropped me on time in Burnley Manchester Road station at 13:11. I wrote about the scenic qualities of the route before in The Scenic Route From Leeds To Manchester.
Burnley Manchester Road station doesn’t have a taxi rank, but I was able to hi-jack an empty one and the driver took me to my Premier Inn just north of the town centre and Turf Moor for a fiver.
It was a hard-fought match and a goalless draw was a fair result.
The Premier Inn is a useful one, as it is only a few minutes walk down and up the hill to Turf Moor.
One of the staff told me, that they get a lot of walkers and cyclists using the hotel as a half-way point on the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
Stirling
On my trip to Scotland, I spent two nights in the Premier Inn in Stirling, which unlike many budget hotels is close to the station. Access between Stirling station and the hotel was over the impressive Forthside bridge.
As Stirling has frequent trains to both Edinburgh and Glasgow and myriad places in between, the city could be an convenient place to stay depending on where you want to visit.
All I Need In A Hotel
I’m only a man with simple tastes.
That’s all I need for a night.
These are my pet hates.
- Having to put your key into a holder to get electricity.
- Taps and showers that need glasses to work out how they work.
- Televisions without Freeview in the UK.
- Rooms that are too hot.
My Hotel Ibis In Prague
I stayed at a Hotel Ibis in Prague.
The value was OK, but the hotel doesn’t compare in value to the average Premier Inn in the UK.
My Hotel In Krakow
I stayed at the Saski Hotel, which I had booked for seventy pounds or so for two nights including breakfast.
I got a clean single room, but the bathroom was down the hall. Although, it was probably brand new and certainly very luxurious.
The position was right being not far from the station and close by Rynek Główny which is the enormous main square in Krakow.
But next time, I go to Krakow, I’ll spend a bit more.
