I did reply in my usual Foxtrot Oscar mode!
Sincerely,
Why Not a Wayne Rooney Foundation Scam?
Now that footballers earn a lot of money, I’m surprised some of our friends in the 419 scam business haven’t been creating things like the Wayne Rooney Foundation, which chooses to give people at random large amounts of money. After all, judging by the recent press reports, he might actually be stupid enough to do something like this off his own bat! Some would argue, he should after his abismal performance in South Africa!
Perhaps because something like this hasn’t turned up, it just shows that the scammers are even more stupid, than your average footballer.

It is just the sort of e-mail, that the Delete key was designed for.
I’m slightly puzzled about how this scam works, but I suspect they’ll ask for some money at some point.
Are Scammers Getting Better?
I received this e-mail this morning.
HM Revenue & Customs
Crownhill Court
Tailyour Road
Plymouth
PL6 5BZThis is to officially inform you that we have thoroughly completed an investigation with the help of our Intelligence Monitoring Network System that your packaged ATM CARD that was received from the Headquarters 1 (HQ1) of the International Monetary Fund, 700 19th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20431 was forwarded to the ATM Issuing Institution for proper verification on the authenticity and it has been confirmed that your ATM CARD is good and ready to be used.
You are advised to forward to our office or via email the following:
1. Identification
2. Electricity bill as proof of address
3. 65GBP for handling and delivery cost.
Joe Amond
For: HM Revenue & Customs
It’s obviously a scam, as it has all the usual elements of a free ATM card, that you really have no right to.
It was also addressed to undisclosed-recipients, which usually means it’s spam. Has anybody ever received an e-mail to undisclosed-recipients, that wasn’t crap?
But :-
- Where are the spelling mistakes?
- There is no expensive phone number.
- The address is genuine, but it’s the Customs Seizure Unit, where you make a claim if they’ve seized your goods.
- They have put a reasonable fee in to the e-mail. But that of course is only the start.
- The e-mail address it was sent for seems OK on a first look. I think it actually came from Russia.
So I believe this e-mail might be good enough to fool some vulnerable or gullible people. Perhaps the Russian education system is better than that of Nigeria?
I must say I’m very tempted to send a cheque for £65 payable to HM Revenue and Customs to Joe Amond in Plymouth and see what happens. THe trouble is I don’t have a cheque book, as I always transfer money directly.
Fake Facebook and www.feetspicy.com
I’ve no idea what this scam is about. I get masses of messages saying that someone on Facebook has sent me a message. As I always check links before I click them, I don’t follow them as they point to www.feetspicy.com.
This web site is registered and hosted in China, so I suppose it’s up to no good.
I just don’t have the time to follow it through, but I suspect it’s some sort of scam to collect Facebook logins.
Crash Scams – A Job For Daisy
Apparently, according to the BBC, there has been a large increase in crash scams, where crooks get you to run into their vehicles and then claim for damage, injuries and storage that are pure fiction.
This is a classic application for my software, Daisy, as it can show a complete pattern of claims, by car, registration letter, post code etc., so that links and hopefully the crooks can be determined.
Yorkshire Loan Company
I’m not sure how these loan scams work, but I suspect they ask you for lots of up front fees and then charge you an exhorbitant interest rate. So there’s nothing unusual there.

A few points :-
- Look for a start at the address, which says that London is in Gloucestershire.
- And then the phone number is one of those high cost 0704 numbers, which you should never phone.
- Licence is spelt the American way with an s.
- The consumer credit licence number may be valid and could relate to an outfit called 1-Click credit.com. Their site has the same Gloucestershire address, but no phone number or an e-mail address. I wouldn’t use them either for that reason.
So ignore ithis scam.
Microsoft Sells Drugs
I actually think not, but this spam e-mail, which looks as if it had come from Microsoft, is actually selling the drugs, that are the main source of income for many crooks and fraudsters around the world. What gave the e-mail away was its title of “Your rod will stay”, so I suppose it was about turning software into hardware!

The links in the mail actually point to a web site called tastymighty.com, which is registered in China and the e-mail may actually have come from a spammer in Uruguay. The web site is yet another incarnation of the well known fake drug provider, the Canadian Pharmacy.
I have seen spammers using the fake Microsoft e-mail, but not for some time. So beware anything like this, as trying to unsubscribe just takes you to the drug site.
Fraud Is Enormous
According to this report on the BBC, there were 15,000 cases of reported fraud in the first half of 2010.
The body estimated consumers lose at least £35bn through fraud each year – but the actual number might be higher as people fail to report being a victim.
This is a disaster and what are we doing about it?
Nothing mainly, as many still believe that these frausters and their offers are real, when they are just too good to be true!
Alliance and Leicester Building Society
This building society has now been rebranded as part of the Santander Group.
But the spammers seem to be unaware of this change and they still keep sending me masses of e-mails trying to get me to give away my login details. It’s pointless anyway as I’ve never had an account at the bank or its parent.
On the subject of phishing spam, I’ve been watching it for about ten years now and it’s hardly changed in the wording and layout. So of the billions the crooks send out any day, how many actually reach a sucker, who is prepared to open their web site. On one today, I tried to open the link and the crooks web site had been taken down.
Hopefully, there must come a day, when the crooks give up and go away? But we don’t seem to be trhere yet! I don’t seem to have read of any prosecutions of phishers either. Surely, the banks are hoping for more than that the crooks give up?
On the other hand, today the Americans have swapped the Russian spies, when they should have prosecuted them! So is it now the policy of governments to only arrest those that have committed minor crimes?
