I Just Don’t Get It
There are reports tonight like this one, that President Assad’s forces have nerve-gassed and killed large numbers of their own people in Damascus.
If we go back to Hitler, who let’s face it was a monster, you could even see some form of evil twisted logic in what he did, especially, as he targeted particular groups.
But there seems to be no logic of any sort to President Assad’s actions.
In the BBC report, I think even Frank Gardner is baffled too.
The only possible reason, is that Assad and his cronies are psychopaths, who get pleasure in killing others.
Syria And Sarin Gas
following the attack on the Tokyo subway with sarin gas in 1995, I asked a friend, who is one of Cambridge’s most eminent chemists about how difficult it is to make sarin gas. He indicated that making the gas is not the problem, but stopping it killing those who make it, is a difficult one, as even a tiny leak is fatal.
For protection, he said, you need the best protection suits. And they are very difficult to obtain and extremely expensive.
So who is providing Syria with these suits? Or do they want to kill everybody, even their own soldiers?
But with Syria, who knows what they think?
A History Of Syria With Dan Snow
I am watching this program on BBC2 as I write this and I’ve never seen a program that explains the tortuous history of the troubled country of Syria so well.
The program is being repeated tomorrow at 23:20 according to this page and is an absolute must see!
If you don’t see the program, your ideas about and solutions for Syria won’t be correct. Unless of course, you are someone who has studied the country and its history and problems for years.
It has been some time, since I’ve seen such an informative and well-made documentary on such a terrifying subject, that might boil over on all of us!
And to think that one of the causes of the current round of troubles in Syria, is the bad doctor, Bashar-al-Assad!
One phrase from Dan Snow summed up the mess.
The threads running through this conflict, mean there is no simple solution.
As he finishes the program, he does at least feel that there is some hope, because of the resilience and experience of the Syrian people.
I hope he’s right!

Ben Macintyre on the Alawites
If you wonder what’s going on in Syria, an article in The Times today, by Ben MacIntyre gives a very sound and fearful insight into the world and history of the Alawites. One quote from the article follows.
Many fear the fall of Assad will give rise to wholesale retribution.
Everybody who wants to make a statement about Syria, should read this article. If you can’t get hold of a copy, at least read the Wikipedia article.
I doubt that we’ll ever get anywhere with Assad and this bunch.
Monstrous Crimes Against Innocents
Not my words but a phrase from the first leader in The Times accusing President Assad of Syria of carrying out atrocities against his own people.
What is going on thee can’t go on for much longer and we should act.
How about letting him come to the Olympics and then arresting him. I’m sure he’d love some nice Dutch hospitality in The Hague.
Will Expelling Two Syrian Diplomats Make Any Difference?
Of Course it won’t! Assad’s vile regime will expel or worse two of our diplomats. And two from all the other countries that have sent a couple of Syrian diplomats home.
I can’t see a solution to this, whilst the Russians and China back the Syrians. After all, kicking Assad out of power, would set a terrible precedent for their own human rights abuses.
Putting The Stiletto In Deep
The wives of ambassadors, have an image, which probably owes a lot to the Ferroro Rocher adverts of a few years ago.
But now the wife of the German Ambassador to the UN, Huberta von Voss-Wittig and her British counterpart, Sheila Lyall Grant have made a video that apopeakls to Asma Assad to get her husband to stop the violence in Syria.
The video is shown in this report in the Guardian.
To say it doesn’t lack punch would be an understatement!
The sad thing though is that it will probably have no effect.
