An Interesting Take On American Sports
I just found this article entitled US Sports Going The Way Of The Gladiator, on CNN’s web site.
These are the first two paragraphs.
Are American sports fans turning into the citizens of ancient Rome, turning up to sports events to see mayhem akin to gladiators fighting for their very lives?
Stars in two of the country’s most prominent sports were asking those kinds of questions Sunday.
Here in the UK, we’ve made our sports a lot safer. Cricketers now wear helmets and even our footballers wear protection on their lower legs.
But after reading the article on CNN, it might appear that the United States is going the other way. Read the article and the comments and draw your own conclusions.
The Bus Windows Aren’t Steamed Up!
It was a filthy wet night, as I came back from supper with my son. But the bus windows aren’t steamed up.
Two years ago on a similar day in Cambridge, the bus to Haverhill was steamed up inside and nothing could be seen through it.
It could have been the weather was worse, or that the London buses have better air circulation.
Meet Frank!
This is a dachshund, I met on a 38 bus.
You really do meet a good class of dog on that route.
A Cafe For Legal Henrys
I saw this cafe in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
What is the plural of Henry, by the way?
A Fountain In Primrose Hill
I saw this fountain in Primrose Hill yesterday.
Sadly, I don’t think it was working. My dietician told me I must drink more water.
Dalston’s Diagonal Crossing
Oxford Circus may have the latest X crossing, but here in Dalston, we’ve got a simple diagonal one.
Time will tell, if it works or not. It could certainly do with a countdown number for the green. But then like the other stroke of the cross, lights is extra. I suppose though, if you do get knocked over, you haven’t far to go to get help from a solicitor.
Safety isn’t helped at the junction as the bus stop has been removed, prior to relocation.
People coming out of the Overground at Dalston Junction station get completely lost looking for a bus.
Best Turkish Barber In
This sign made me laugh!
It also reminded me of the limerick.
There was a man called Lime
Who tried to make up a rhyme
Things all went fine
To the very last line
Where he had far far too many words to fit into the space available.
Back To The Fleet Street Clinic
C and myself used to go here, for our annual flu jabs.
About three years ago, I was unhappy about my cholesterol and went to a private dietician in Ipswich to see if they could help me. They could and did, but sadly they no longer practice at that address.
As a coeliac, I do like to see if I’m doing things right, and as I’d found that the Fleet Street clinic had a dietician, I arranged an appointment for this morning with their private dietician; Ruth Kander.
As I suspected on past experience of the clinic and dieticians in general, I received the quality of professional advice, that I expected.
The Definitive View From The New Bus For London
I travelled up to the Angel this morning on a New Bus for London. I sat at the back downstairs looking behind, as depending on what bus fell in behind, I might have made a change.
In the end I had a quick chat with the driver/conductor and he described an incident that could have been serious, due to the ill-thought-out behaviour of a group of pedestrians.
It strikes me that as these buses get more numerous, they might actually improve the safety of pedestrians, if feedback from these all-seeing driver/conductors was fed into the system and this led to better pavements and crossing points in the places, where near misses have been observed.
Job Scam – Hyde Park Hotel Revisited
In February 2010, I put up a post called Job Scam – Hyde Park Hotel. I’ve checked the hotel on Trip Advisor and there entry is here. it looks very little different to many hotels of this type in london.
My original post has since had a life of its own, if you look at the over a hundred comments on the site. And it is still regularly visited with page counts of
2010 – 1032
2011 – 541
2012 – 275
in the last three years.
It looks like the e-mails are starting to find mugs again, as I’ve had a couple of extra comments on the original post in the last couple of days.
This time though a figure of £210 is mentioned. So it’s obviously a worthwhile scam for those perpetrating it.
