Krakow – A City Of Maps, Clocks, Trams And Gluten Free Food

Krakow is well-known for its buildings, but I found some other things equally fascinating in a delightful city.

All of the maps, clocks, trams and excellent gluten-free food, made the city a real joy to explore and I would recommend the city to anybody.

It’s All Happening In Todmorden On Sunday

Where I live in London a few years ago they opened a new rail service called the Overground and the transformation has been dramatic. Not least in the rise in passenger numbers, but also it seems in the drop on the number of unemployed youth hanging around on the street. Perhaps, now you can get to that job reliably, you have got a better and well-paid one?

I don’t know, as it’s many years since I went job hunting!

But this Sunday the Todmorden Curve opens to passengers as is reported in this piece in the Lancashire Telegraph. If nothing, the locals certainly seem excited!

You do have to wonder how many other short rail lines like this could be re-opened?

Emirates Air Line – 25th January 2015

I took these pictures today from the Emirates Air-Line.

It wasn’t very busy, but in some ways that is better, as you get a car to yourself.

An Alarmist Report About Crossrail

This article in the Evening Standard. entitled Commuters facing year of disruption due to Tottenham Court Road station works has an alarmist headline.

But seeing that the same station was closed to Northern Line trains and platforms at Bond Street and Embankment have all suffered lengthy closures, without millions of Londoners marching in front of City Hall, I don’t think many will bother and will use one of the many alternative routes. Most of the comments from readers of the article, say they’re not bothered.

In a few weeks, it is rumoured that the new entrance for Tottenham Court Road station will open.

So can we have some real journalism?

Only In Liverpool

I like this story of a grey seal that has been found in the middle of a field in St. Helens seventeen miles from the nearest coastline.

Liverpool is a city, where fun is never far from peoples’ minds.

As it contains a video of a man with a broom trying to move a large sea mammal, everyone in the city will be trying to write an appropriate joke.

When the story broke, someone high-up in Boots was on the radio and he suggested that some of their up-market trout pate would be good for the seal.

Energy Efficient Houses Linked To Asthma

I found this research on the Exeter University web site, after seeing a report in today’s Sunday Times.

Very Interesting!

Why Should Hackers Censor What I Watch At The Cinema?

As one of my friends was born in Korea, I was quite looking to seeing The Interview.

However, it now appears that Sony has cancelled all showings of the film in response to threats from hackers.

In response, I will not buy any more Sony products. Not that I have for a couple of years.

Surely, the film makers were only following the route of Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator.

Properly used humour is a vicious weapon and I’ve been wondering what Joan Rivers would have said of the cancellation.

I hope that Have I got News For You give the whole story comprehensive coverage.

I decide what I watch, not dictators, hackers or those with weird political views!

At least the film will soon be available on the Internet, as Sony’s Plastic Collander Of Security, will have let at least one complete copy escape.

Andrew Mitchell

I refer you to one I posted earlier. Here’s a paragraph.

So my late wife’s advice to anybody who is thinking about suing for libel was don’t.  You’ll make it worse and you’ll only end up with a large bill from lawyers.  Even if you win! I agree entirely.

C would have a smile on her face and be saying silly man.

What Do You Do With The Likes Of Roberts And Evans?

I remember the day, when Harry Roberts shot dead the policemen in Shepherds Bush, as it was a Friday and I was working behind the bar in the Merryhills pub in Oakwood. It left a rather sombre mood to the evening, as everybody read the story in the paper.

That is nearly fifty years ago and we now have the problem of what to do with Roberts.

We also have all the arguments about Ched Evans, and whether he should play football again, after release from a sentence served for rape.

If it was up to various vociferous minorities, then the likes of Roberts and Evans, along with masses of other criminals serious or even petty, would be incarcerated for ever.

Some prisoners need to be locked up permanently, and without all the facts, I would never say who these people are.

But really, if we lock even more people up, I feel I have a right to protest about the waste of my taxes.

In some ways, what I dislike most about prison, is that it appears to totally fail in preparing prisoners to return as decent members of society. If a school had the educational performance of the average prison, it would be rightly closed down.

If you read Lord Ramsbotham‘s book, Prisongate, you also realise that quite a few prisoners are suffering from diseases such as dementia, which have rendered them unlikely to be a danger to society. Surely humanity says that these people are better in the care of their families if possible.

But then to some people vengeance is all important, and capital punishment should be applied regularly as it is in Iran, China and the United States.

Now Barclays Tidy Up Savings Accounts

It’s reported in The Sunday Times, but also here in The Guardian.

In my view it says to me, you don’t trust of the wunch of bankers.

All I use my bank for is to hold my working money and provide debit and credit cards.
