Problems
Looking at the weather over the last few days, I suspect that coeliac disease and my stroke are small problems compared to what some are enduring.
At least I’m snug in a newish warm house in Central London, with buses everywhere. I’ve even got a cafe opposite and a pub next door.
I also think of the problems I don’t have, like a car, a smart phone, and wondering where my money is coming from.
Problems are relative!
Ipswich Launches Campaign Against Cheap Super Strength Alcohol
Ipswich is an independent town in the very independent county of Suffolk and it has always been thus for both of them. Today though it is reported, that they are launching a campaign to ban cheap super strength alcohol. It’s all here in the East Anglian Daily Times. I heard of it on Radio 5 and they said it was the first town in England to do so.
Let’s hope it all succeeds in its objectives.
I suppose the real problem is to get all of the small off-licences to comply.
Aberdoom
Not my name for it, but a Scot, who I’ve known for years.
But just look at this.
It must be one of the most remarkable weather pictures, I’ve ever seen.
Should Well-Off Pensioners Pay More Tax?
I’m not in favour of the proposal of the Liberal Democrats that well-off pensioners, like myself should pay more tax.
If the government keeps the money, it’ll only spend it on something of which I disapprove, like more quangos to employ the so-called great and good, many of whom have never done a real day’s work in their lives.
I prefer to give more than equivalent donations to charities of my choice, which I do on my birthday each year, in thanks for surviving another twelve months!
The Queen Buys Pictures Of Herself
It has been revealed that the Queen has bought a set of prints of herself by Andy Warhol and they will be displayed at Windsor Castle. It’s reported here on the BBC.
There is no comment from Her Majesty, but I suspect she’d have vetoed buying them in May, if she didn’t like them.
Larry On The Voice Of Russia
Apparently, it’s not just the Chief Whip that’s in trouble, but the Chief Mouser to! This article from the Voice of Russia, shows how the most important news get distributed around the world. Note the picture.
I suppose President Putin uses tigers in the Kremlin.
This post was prompted by a wonderful picture of Larry in today’s Times.
Why No Flooded Prisons?
In all the rain we’ve had lately, I can’t remember any cases of prisons being flooded.
Does this mean that we are more careful where we site prisons than new homes?
Surely the same rules should apply.
Cool Brands
The BBC is also reporting the coolest brands.
Top is Apple, which proves P. T. Barnum‘s statement of “there’s a sucker born every minute”. In fact of the top twenty brands, I only use five; YouTube, Google, BBC iPlayer, Sony and Nikon.
Surely though, the coolest brand in post-Olympic London is Heatherwick, who designed the Olympic flame and the New Bus for London.
Who’d have thought a bus could be cool, but then, who’d have thought that the BBC, would have designed, something that features highly on the list produced by Cool Brands.
India’s Strike Against Foreign Supermarkets
Two Tesco stories in a row, must be some sort of record for this blog. But India has had a partial strike against opening up their economy to foreign supermarkets. It’s reported here on the BBC.
Perhaps, Tesco and the others, should strike and refuse to serve anybody, who looks like they come from the sub-continent. Or perhaps they could picket Asian corner-shops.
On the other hand there must be a compromise, which would be best for all!
Was Kate Caught Smoking?
It does appear that the infamous photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge, might show her smoking, as well as sunbathing topless.
I suspect many will find smoking a greater moral crime. Especially, as you probably get a worst cancer from smoking than sunbathing.
