Voting for the Bus

I was at the Angel yesterday afternoon, waiting for a 38 or 56 to take me home, when a New Bus for London passed the other way going towards Victoria.

The guy standing next to me, asked if I’d ridden the bus and I said several times. We then both agreed that we liked them and I said that as an engineer and a designer, it had a lot of good ideas that would find their way into new buses, making them all better.

He then made the statement, that although he was a lifelong Labour voter, he would be voting for the one candidate, who won’t be scrapping the bus; Boris.

Is this the first time that the man on the Dalston omnibus, has been swayed in his voting preference, by that bus?

Championship Clubs Agree Fair Play Rules

The Championship clubs have agreed a set of fair-play rules to ensure that a club can’t do a QPR and buy themselves promotion.  It is reported here in the Independent.

We should be told which were the three Championship clubs that voted against the implementation of the rules.

Any ideas?

On the 26th April, The Times said the three clubs were Reading, Southampton and Leicester City. All are owned by very rich individuals.

Are All Our Spies Kinky?

The revelations in the inquest into the death of Gareth Williams seem to get more and more bizarre.  Here‘s the latest instalment from the Telegraph. What will Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells be writing in his letters to the paper?

It has been said he was a brilliant mathematician.  Obviously, if this was the case, he should have been able to work out how long it takes someone to suffocate in a sports bag!

The French Try Every Way to Leave the Country

The French seem to have panicked about the prospect of a new very left-wing government, as this article shows.

This Dreadful Weather

Carol Kirkwood’s forecasts are still as good as ever.  But why has the weather got so bad since BBC Breakfast moved to the Capital of Rain, Manchester?

Is it the Devil getting his own back? As he wants to see what’s going on in the capital of this country, not some second-rate city in the North.

It’s Not All Depressing News!

Clicking through the BBC News website this morning is particularly depressing.

We have the story of the all-Labour Newham Council trying to offload some of their residents who need houses on Stoke-on-Trent. That would be an interesting commute. Governments for too long, have ignored the problem of housing in the South-East and London in particular. Only yesterday, Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London was asking for more funds to create more school places in the capital.

You can understand, why politicians on the far-right have been calling for an immigration clampdown. But being from two immigrant lines myself , I can’t complain can I?

We have an imbalance in the number of houses in the UK and the number of people we have here.  The main solution is to build more houses, which the government appears to be doing. But also we should ensure that the houses we have are fully occupied.  It could be said, that I’m greedy living in a three-bedroomed house by myself!

And then we have the story about how The Netherlands, which many think is one of the more stable of the Eurozone countries is in trouble.

I could find equally depressing stories, such as how Clare Squires died in the London Marathon.

But in some ways that story has a remarkably heart-warming ending as many are contributing to her cause; The Samaritans. The Reverend Chad Varah would have approved.

So perhaps the immense wealth of human spirit will win out! If you want to contribute to Claire go here.

Rain, Rain Go Away

There was a children’s poem, that my sister and I used to recite on days like this.

I’ve found some lyrics.

Rain, rain go away

Come again some other day

We want to go outside and play

Come again some other day

I think, we used to substitute something like “Come again on washing day” for the last line.

It still doesn’t get round the problem of today’s bad weather.  Especially, as it’s promised to get worse this afternoon and appears it’s going to be like this for a few days yet.

Boiler Room Scammers Boiled

I like this story. Let’s hope these three don’t ever get out of jail to fleece people of their money.

The Death of the Flannel

The Daily Mail amongst other media, is reporting that we’re not buying flannels any more.  The BBC drive program is making great fun of their demise, with various jokes being sent in. Some of course are saying that flannels are towels for diminutive people, like the presenter, Peter Allen. Others are sending in jokes. One just said.

I have two flannels; one for upstairs and one for downstairs.

I can’t actually remember any flannels in my house for many years.  I think we got rid of the last ones when the children left home.  When I changed all my towels for the new house, I didn’t find any flannels to throw out. I think C used one of the last ones to clean out our first basset hounds ears.
