The First Northern BBC Breakfast

I watched it all the way through and there wasn’t one politician.  Some will say that’s a good thing, but the quality of the guests wasn’t good and they were very local to the studio.

If it doesn’t improve, I’ll be switching to Radio 5 or perhaps even Radio 4.

Perhaps this is what the BBC wants as radio must be much cheaper to make than television.

The Things People Say

The BBC weather girl; Carol Kirkwood, was comparing this Easter weather with last.

She said that last year it was so hot, she only wore a T-shirt in her garden.

Really!

Paper Isn’t What It Used To Be

I do find reading a newspaper these days to be an absolute trial, as turning the pages in order seems almost impossible.

I did think it was the stroke, but it now appears to me to be the quality of paper that is now used by papers like The Times and The Evening Standard.

Increasingly, I am using the on-line versions of both papers. And others that I don’t buy or pick up.

The Day Mrs. Thatcher Kissed a Sailor

The Times has an amazing story about how Mrs. Thatcher kissed a sailor, who was a bomb disposal expert in the Falklkands War.  Most of the story is here in this article about Michael Fellows from Sussex Life, but it doesn’t tell how they dived under the Cabinet Office Table to see the map of the Falklands on the other side.

I suspect the story will be reprinted in other papers later.

More Mice From God?

I don’t know what our friend from yesterday would say about this story in tonight’s Standard! Perhaps the mice were feeling cold and needed somewhere to bed down and the actress’s cleavage beckoned.

But they would have had to cross the river!

Mice in Tesco Was Plague From God

This article in the Standard, entitled,  Mice plague ‘God’s reply’ to gay gift, is about a religious zealot, who claims that God got back at Tesco because they backed London’s Gay Pride march.

How ridiculous! Did God ring him up and tell him? Or does God have a Facebook or Twitter account?

Has anybody asked God, if he or she is gay and got an answer that can be proven?  After all, if there is only one God, they could be gay, straight or bi-sexual and probably wouldn’t know.  But if they are the only one, they are definitely lonely.

Where Is Denis Howell When You Need Him?

Sadly Denis Howell, who was appointed Minister for Drought in 1976 during one of the last major droughts in the UK has died. Immediately, after his appointment, it rained with a biblical force.

Who shluld the government appoint?

The Quality of Some A-Levels

It would appear that nothing changes here in some subjects. The main news story is that Michael Gove wants to reform A levels and give the universities more control. He states that some A levels don’t prepare some students for their University courses.

Was it ever any different?

When I went to Liverpool University in the 1960s, my maths was good, especially as I had done a Further Maths exam after my normal Pure and Applied Maths. The latter incidentally was dropped soon after I took it, despite it being the most useful to engineers.

Others though, did not have my maths skill, despite having got an A level.  So a lot of my first year was spent relearning maths, so I could be a good engineer.

In fact, the problem was even worse.  Until the year before me, the Engineering Department at Liverpool, got the Maths Department to teach maths. But they had found it was taught so badly, that they took to teaching it themselves.

That was sixty years ago!

I’d love to see a current Maths A level paper and see how much is within my knowledge.

The Bluebells Are Out in Kew

The BBC has just said that the bluebells are out in Kew.  This is the earliest they have appeared since records began. No wonder I’ve had such a terrible time being boiled alive in this house, with all the sun we’ve had so far this year.

Simon Weston on the Falklands

Simon Weston appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning talking eloquently about  not only the war, but Argentina’s reasons for going to war.

It was a better analysis than anything I’ve heard from a politician or a pundit.

He is a true inspiration to those who have suffered a few tragedies in their lives. And long may he be so!
