A Call From 08000562422

I had a strange call from this number on my mobile phone.  It told me my address and said it was from EDF Energy and asked if I was responsible for paying the bill, in which case I was to press 1.  If I wasn’t I was to press 2.  I hung up, as EDF Energy are not my supplier and anyway I pay by direct debit to another company, who did me a few favours when I moved in and were very professional.  That’s not to say they are not professional too, as they have dealt with the writs sent to previous non-payers at this address with no hassle to me.

But I smelt a rat, as I have nothing to do with EDF Energy.

I checked the number on the Internet and this is what I found.  Some items mention the number as a possible telepest.

I did try to phone EDF Energy, but their call centre was busy.  This was one of the reasons, they didn’t get my business in the first place, as I couldn’t get through.

So if you get a call from this number, I suggest you do the sensible thing and hang up.  I can’t find anything on the Internet to link it to EDF Energy.

What worries me is that someone had got my mobile phone number and linked it to my correct address.  The only people who have that link are credit card companies, my bank and companies like John Lewis, IKEA and Dixons. I’m not accusing anybody, but it strikes me that there is a leak somewhere. But then these companies have my landline and I’ve never had such a call on that number.

St. George in the East

Walking round London, you often come across surprising buildings, gardens or other sites.

I was in need of a drink and the courtyard of this church was selling tea, coffee and cakes in aid of a children’s hospice, Richard House.

Note the excellent information board from English Heritage.  We need a lot more of these!

So I went in and had a cuppa.

St. George in the East was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, who also designed Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard amongst many other famous buildings.

The church was badly damaged in the Blitz and a new interior was built inside the shell of the original.

My New Trainers

I got my new trainers on Friday from Runners Need.

I wore them all day yesterday in Bristol and in the end we had to walk all the way from Ashton Gate to Temple Meads, which took about thirty minutes.

This morning, I have no stiffness or soreness!

I’ve not had any cramps in bed either.

So perhaps everybody should get their trainers properly fitted.

Sacrilege

On the train on Thursday evening, when I went for a drink in Hampstead, the young lady next to me was highlighting texts in her bible with a pink fluorescent market pen.

In my view to deface any book in such a way is sacrilege.

The Disappointing SS Great Britain

I found Brunel’s SS Great Britain very disappointing.

SS Great Britain

This is the best view you can get of the ship without paying £12.90 a person.  That is just too much!  Compare with how the Belfast or the Cutty Sark are displayed in London, where you can get a good view of the outside for nothing.

When you only have a couple of hours to visit an attraction, there needs to be some way to get a flavour.

The cafe was a bit of a disappointment too, as nothing was marked gluten free and it took a great deal of time to find out what was OK for me.  In the end I had some very nice soup, but I still paid for the bread I didn’t need.  Not that I worried about that, as the food was more important, but it would make it difficult for a family of coeliacs.

A Glimmer of Hope in Palestine

The Times yesterday had an article and a leader about how things are getting better in Palestine.

Let’s hope so!

They give the credit to Salam Fayyad, who has been concentrating on economic development of the country.

They sum it all up with this last paragraph.

Mr Fayyad’s efforts are embattled and small-scale, but they are far from futile. They exemplify the principle that statecraft is better practised by improving people’s lives than by promoting sweeping revolutionary schemes. They are a good deed in a weary region.

 I wish Mr. Fayyad well.

But perhaps he may turn out to be the right person in the right place at the right time! Palestine and the world for that matter needs a great statesman to move things forward.

Groups At the Olympic Park

I took this picture of a group enjoying themselves at the Olympic Park yesterday.

Enjoying Themselves at the Olympic Park

I think they were from a special school, but unfortunately, I couldn’t ascertain where they were from. But they were certainly having a good time.

Calls From 253-802-0308 in the United States

I have been plagued by this number.  Read more about others who have from this web page. What is interesting is this snippet in the page.

I have posted this before, so I will paste it here for others who may benefit. My husband and I both work in IT and Telecommunication. I researched the number and came up with the following. The company International Telecom has a service called Kallback.  It says it does the following:
1. Kallback lets you change your callback® phone number as you travel. Or you can pick a single, permanent location
Standard Trigger Numbers allow you to receive calls at a single, permanent location.
Traveler Trigger Numbers allow you to change your callback® location.
Personalized Trigger Numbers ask for you by name at a permanent location.
You can also trigger a call from the internet.

I also received a call from the number listed on this post.  The carrier for this number is  International Telcom, Ltd.

The thing with this service is that they can call you, but you can’t trace them.  These calls originate from outside the Continental U.S.  They do not come from Washington state.  They are like calling cards.  They show the trigger number, but not the number the call is actually coming from.  It is deceptive.

I think the information is genuine, so perhaps it is time that International Telecom got shut down or at least stopped their system being used by scammers.

Immigration and Bad Food Induced Health Problems

David Cameron did one important thing in his speech and that was lay out facts. People will argue he has been selective, but at least he tried.

I live in Inner London and as I’m a double immigrant in the 1800s, I can’t really moan about immigrants can I?  But I do get fed up with the proliferation of junk food shops everywhere, often staffed by exploited low-wage earning people with dodgy immigration status. These establishments also are constantly putting flyers for gluten-rich food through my door. I  am getting a notice made that politely asks the delivery people to put them in the wheelie bin by the door, to save me the trouble.

So perhaps we should make junk food more expensive for health reasons and to combat obesity.  The easiest way to do this would be to impose a high minimum wage for those who work in the fast food industry.  And then make sure it is strictly enforced!

Do Bendy Buses Encourage Cheating?

I tend to avoid bendy buses, but sometimes they are the first to turn up and I’m in a hurry. When you get on a normal bus, where you touch the Oyster reader by the driver, you never see people get on without doing it.  On the other hand a couple of weeks ago, I was in the middle of a bendy bus and at least half who got on at the middle and rear doors didn’t touch the reader.

It will be interesting to see the increase in revenue on a route like the seventy-free, when they change to normal buses in a couple of months.
