The Heron Tower
The Heron Tower is a newly-built skyscraper in the City of London. I can actually see it from my front window, as some of these pictures show.
It is the tallest in London after The Shard. And I like the Heron Tower much better.
Memories Of That Was The Week That Was
They’re talking about That Was The Week That Was on Radio 5, this afternoon.
It was on late at night and I had to get up early in the morning. So my father used to get me up just as the program started.
I can remember several things about the program.
- Bernard Levin’s interviews. My father hated pomposity and nearly got himself a hernia laughing at some of Levin’s interviews.
- Frankie Howerd on the Budget, which is surely one of the greatest monologues ever written and performed. It was written by Muir and Norden.
- The program on the death of President Kennedy. Surely, the finest tribute program ever.
- Millicent Martin’s songs. And her dresses that appealed to a 14-year-old.
- David Frost’s tactics to handle overrunning of the program.
I’ve never seen anything so good since.
This Junk Mail Got It In One
This was on the mat this morning.
I think it took me ten seconds to realise it should go in the bin.
I don’t even know who it was from.
The UK’s Last Typewriter
I thought that no-one made typewriters anymore, until I saw this story on the BBC this morning.
I learned to type at about seven or eight on my father’s old Imperial in his office over the printing works in Wood Green.
I’ve never been much of a two-handed typist and now with my gammy left hand, I generally do most of it one-handed. Although, I’m getting better, as I use the left hand more.
An Example Of Jerry’s Wiring
We found what was wrong with the heating this morning. Jerry or more possibly a tenant, has bypassed the controls and wired the underfloor heating valves permanently open.
In other words, they have been set to give someone a good boiling.
As the picture shows, it wasn’t even wired up properly. Note that the junction box was just screwed around the jumble of wires.
With the valves permanently open, the temperature will of course just rise and rise, as the individual zone controls can’t switch the water off.
Note for safety reasons, I’ve swirched the whole system off, using the big red knob on the right. Once boiled, twice shy.
Should The Church Of England Have Women Bishops?
As someone, who normally only goes to a church for funerals and weddings, to look at the architecture or have acupuncture, I’m not the right person to decide.
I have been to two funerals with women celebrants and I don’t think it makes any difference to the average sombre funeral. It would of course make a difference, if the celebrant was useless or unsympathetic, but then I’ve never been to a funeral like that.
So personally, it doesn’t matter to me what sex a priest is, provided they do a good job.
As in any job, to restrict your choice by not allowing one sex to do it, is silly. And all jobs need the best person who can do the job. Perhaps the only place where a female priest might not be suitable is ministering to male sex offenders in a prison. On the other hand, a woman priest might be better at it. To use a way out example, to set out how you will vote, is a bad idea.
I also think that a vote not to allow women bishops may turn many away from the church.
Bu
Sendola
I like this little web site application called Sendola. I saw it on Leon‘s site and it enables you to get details of the company to your phone. In Leon’s case it gets the address of the restaurant.
It even worked with my Nokia 6310i. But with a smart phone you get a map as well.
Sendola is even used by St. Paul’s cathedral, so God must get directions on their tablet.
A Superb Gluten Free Meal At Kings Cross
I popped into Kings Cross station and had a superb gluten-free meal at Leon.
As you can see the surroundings weren’t bad either for the sit down part of a fast food restaurant. It made your average burger joint look exceedingly plastic, tacky and in the worst possible taste from across the pond.
To cap it all, the Catalan Salad and White Bean Stew with a Fresh Lemonade was just £8.55.
The Kings Cross Extension Comes Down
This must be one of the most satisfying jobs in London.
Knocking down the awful 1970s extension to Kings Cross station is a demolition job with a real purpose.
Do All Pill Packets Have A Picture?
It struck me today, that my various pill packets have a picture of the tablet on the outside.
Either I’m being unobservant or could it be that I read the words rather than look at the picture.
