Canal Moorings With Their Own Station

When I came back from Reading into Paddington station yesterday, I walked to the back of the Inter City 125 train and took the bridge to the Metropolitan line station. Before catching my train to get home, I ventured outside to look at the new entrance, which has just opened.

As you can see the entrance is by the canal and the Paddington Basin. It’s obviously not finished yet and won’t be until Crossrail opens in a few years.

It is an area, that is crying out for a decent cafe, restaurant or bar.

The Cafe In The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The cafe in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is all new.

It is run by a company called Unity Kitchen, who have this as their mission statement.

We have a strong social and environmental purpose; we create jobs for people with disabilities, make good food affordable for local people, and run our business sustainably.

They did have a gluten-free cake from a company called Sponge.

The cafe was busy, but it probably needs a few more days to get its systems working better.

Visiting The New Park

I finally, got to view the new Queen Eizabeth Olympic Park yesterday.

It is obviously not finished by any means, but it is impressive.

It also opens early in the morning at 06:00 and closed fairly late.

I travelled to the park, by getting a 588 bus from Hackney Wick, to the stop by the Copper Box. At present, the information on the bus isn’t working in the area of the park, but I suspect it will be in a few days.

To The View Tube For Lunch With Culture

After Pudding Mill Lane it was just a short walk to the top of the Northern Outfall Sewer and the ViewTube.

I went primarily to have a look at the photo exhibition there called What The Gamesmakers Did Next.

What The Gamesmakers Did Next

It was worth seeing and afterwards I decided to have a coffee or a soft drink. In the end, I had this delicious scrambled egg, smoked salmon and salad with some gluten-free bread.

It was well worth the trip to this end of the Olympic Park.

My only complaint is that the fact that they can handle gluten-free food is not on this sign.

Delicious Things This Way

But that’s minor and only affects me!

I also find it sad, that there is no notices up, which say you are standing on top of Joseph Bazellete’s great creation that still moves North London’s sewage to Beckton. But then the only smell at this time of year is that of the wild flowers. We should be proud of our engineering heritage!

If you feel you need a walk, this is also a good point to start a walk, across the Olympic Park towards Hackney Wick and Victoria Park.

I also heard on my visit to the View Tube, that when the Olympic Park is fully developed, it will be linked by a pathway to the park.

I Thought We Were Past This

You don’t here of too many racist stories these days, but this one from Wakefield in the Independent seems to be a throwback to forty or fifty years ago.

The only things you judge a cafe or restaurant on, are the quality of the premises, the food and the customer service. In fact, in my case, several of the cooks and chefs I’ve met with black African or West Indian origins, have understood my need for gluten-free food better than a lot of others I could name.

It’s just a pity, I have no reason to go to Wakefield, otherwise, I’d pop in fior at least a cup of tea.

A Walk And A Taste Of Stockholm

After  checking out the tickets, I went for a walk with lunch thrown in using my Walk and Eat Guide.

The pictures tell the story of the walk.

I actually had lunch in Cafe Rival, which is in the hotel of the same name. Again there was gluten-free bread.  I think, if I go to Stockholm again, I’ll try the Hotel Rival first.

A A Gill On Harrods

When the boys were young, C and I used to occasionally take them for lunch on Saturdays in Harrods. It was enjoyable and we used to like to browse and sometimes we’d even buy something.  For example, the Gieves and Hawkes jacket I’m wearing in this post, was bought nearly twenty years ago in the store. It’s still perfect, and has perhaps only been cleaned once, if that.

A A Gill in the Sunday Times describes the shop in some amazing words, of which the pick is probably this.

The shop is now as sophisticated as a Malibu enema.

He reserves his greatest prose for the reason for his visit; the Disney Cafe, giving it one star out of five for atmosphere and no stars for the food.

The article was well worth the price I paid for the newspaper.

Excellent Gluten Free Cake At The ViewTube

I went to the ViewTube today, for a tea and cake.

It was actually mandarin and chocolate cake, but if you didn’t like that, then there was another different flavour.

Sebi’s Cafe At Canonbury Station

A lot of the Overground stations have space for a small cafe.

Sebi's Cafe At Canonbury Station

Sebi’s Cafe At Canonbury Station

We need more like this one on Canonbury station.

Canonbury is an ideal place for a cafe, as the platform is wide and there is quite a few passengers changing from the North to East London lines and vice versa.

The Only Starbucks I Habitually Visit

I don’t generally go to Starbucks very often, but I will use this one in Bold Street in Liverpool.

In the 1960s, I’m fairly certain, it used to be La Bussola, which was the coffee bar, where everybody went.
