London Mayor Sadiq Khan Plans TfL ‘Junk Food’ Advert Ban

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.

I don’t buy junk food, except for the odd bag of gluten-free chips from McDonalds, where there is nothing else I can find.

The move is to cut obesity in the capital.

I think a relately problem is the steadily-growing numbers of fast food shops in places like Kingsland High Street, near where I live?

  • They offer unhealthy food.
  • Few offer food for those like me, who have special needs.
  • They contribute largely to litter all over the place.
  • They are always dropping junk mail through my door.

Walk past these shops, just after school has finished and they are full of kids, stuffing themselves.

So what is Sadiq Khan doing to curb the numbers of the unhealthy places? Precisely, nothing!

In the BBC article, Karl Mercer the BBC corespondent says this.

It seems the mayor is trying to have his (low-calorie) cake and eat it.

Perhaps aware that high sugar, fat and salt ads bring in around £13m for TfL he says his new ban will not apply to companies – just to their less healthy products.

I think it is unworkable policy, that if it results in reduced advertising spend for TfL, could result in higher fares or Council Tax.

Pure Gold In The Fight Against Unwanted Calls

This morning on my mat was a card put through my door by one of umpteen mini-cab companies that are a real swarm here.

But the card is pure gold, as it listed both a landline and a mobile number.

So any caller on either my landline or mobile gets a polite message asking him, (Is it ever a her?), to ring my mobile or landline.

Those that throw rubbish on my doormat, will find these nuisance call merchants will give them a few minutes of idiotic chat.

A Surprising Election Leaflet

I have got quite a bit of electoral junk mail this election, but one today was different.

It was the usual A4 or A5 well-printed flyer, from a party I have voted for in the past, but my name and correct address was actually printed on the glossy paper.

Admittedly, they had used last year’s register with my incorrect name, but that was understandable, as the register was only finally corrected a couple of weeks ago.

Perhaps, we need a law to say that nothing goes through a letter box, unless it is properly addressed.

I’d probably get about four letters a week.

Leopards Don’t Change Their Spots

I’ve just had some spam, trying to get me to sign up to Coral Bookmakers.

As I have a betting shop near me and an on-line account, I don’t need another.

So who is the Chief Executive of Coral? None other than Andy Hornby, who is one of the HBOS Three.

Some people never learn, how to run a business!

This Junk Mail Got It In One

This was on the mat this morning.

This Junk Mail Got It In One

I think it took me ten seconds to realise it should go in the bin.

I don’t even know who it was from.

A Guerilla Attitude To Junk Mail

I’m developing a guerilla attitude to junk mail, both physical and by e-mail.

1. I never buy anything from a company that sends junk mail.  So I won’t deal with Virgin in all most of its forms, as they’re one of the worst offenders.

2. Local taxis who persist in putting cards through my door, get there numbers written down and when I get an annoying phone call on my land line trying to deal with my non-existent PPI, I ask that they ring on my mobile number, which of course is the local minicab. You can play all sorts of games like this.

3. As I have a post box opposite, any junk mail delivered by the postman, goes straight in that box.

4. I think I’ll get a big stamp saying something like.  “Elvis says return to sender”

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Are Virgin Media the Worst Junk Mailers?

Every few weeks, I get one of these through the post, delivered by the Royal Mail.

Unwanted Mail from Virgin Media

I have registered with the Mail Preference Service and I do have sign which says No Junk Mail. But the mail is addressed to the Occupier, which is apparently not covered by any rules. Perhaps, I should send it on to the Occupy London people.

Virgin shouldn’t really worry, as except for their trains, I don’t and won’t use any of their products. And anyway Virgin Media is expensive.

Three Months Junk Mail

This box contains three months junk mail.

Three Months Junk Mail

It went in the recycling this morning. But why should Hackney Council and my Council Tax pay to dispose of assorted rubbish from fast food shops, catalogue retailers and other junk mailers?

Another Reason To Hate Junk Mail

I hate it even more now, as when I came home yesterday, my letter box was stuffed with rubbish, so much so, that I couldn’t open the box to get it out.

Luckily by tearing it up on the outside, I was able to release it enough to clear it all.

And I have a message on the door saying, that I don’t want junk mail.

Foolish Virgin

I got two letters today addressed to the occupier from Virgin Media today in addition to a prioperly addressed piece of junk mail.

As they still haven’t transferred my old number from my previous house to this one, I suppose I’m now 60% of the way to changing to someone else.
