Was President Obama Born in the United States?

There are various people who claim that his birth certificate is a forgery and one of these an Arizona sheriff is reported here on the BBC.

I was born in 1947 and my birth certificate was wrongly filled in and then I lost it. But the replacement still had the change certified by a signed-over stamp. So even in the UK sixty-five years ago, it would be difficult to get it wrong.

Now President Obama was born in Honolulu on the 4th August, 1961, so he is only about ten years older than my two remaining sons. At that time, you not only got a birth certificate, but the baby would be entered into hospital records. And of course, there are lots of family photos of the baby.

So there will be lot of evidence, that would stand up in a court of law.  Certainly in the UK!

Intriguingly,  we don’t have any laws about where our Prime Minister has to be born. It all depends on quality, not an accident of birth.

I also know of someone, who was born in the United States, because his father was the UK Ambassador. As his father went on to get a hereditary peerage and the right to sit in the House of Lords, he could have ended up as a member of the UK House of Lords and US President.

So it looks like the challenge to Obama is very much spurious and judging by the profile of the Arizona sheriff, based very much on race!

Dinosaurs Can Bite

It was reported yesterday that Liverpool University has found out that dinosaurs such as T-Rex bit with the force of a medium-sized elephant sitting on you.

I had thought that dinosaurs were extinct, until I heard Len McCluskey’s call for disruption during the Olympics. Even his friends in the Labour party didn’t feel they could support him.

So perhaps they aren’t extinct and they can still bite.

Merkel Gets A Soaking

A waiter has found his fame for fifteen minutes, by pouring five glasses of beer down Angela Merkel’s back. It’s reported here in the Telegraph.

Was the waiter Greek? At least he didn’t pour it down John Prescott, who I don’t think would not have reacted as quietly as the German Chancellor.

Presumed Dead Law

The Justice Committee of the House of Commons is calling for a new ‘presumed dead’ law. There is an article here on the BBC.

This law could go further in that we also need an Interim Death Certificate, for where someone has died, but the cause of death needs to be determined by a formal inquest.

The mother of a friend of mine died a few years ago and until the full Death Certificate, it created a lot of heartache, grief and administrative pain.  Especially, as his father had delegated everything financial to his mother.  He couldn’t even find out how much was in the bank account and what standing orders were set up. But an Interim Death Certificate would have remedied that situation, although perhaps to avoid fraud, it would not have the full rights of a full Death Certificate.

I heard from my legal friends at the time, that this is quite a common situation and so today I wrote to the Justice Committee.  I just found the page for the Committee on the web. There is an e-mail address there.  So if you have a matter for a House of Commons Committee, it is very easy to contact them.

Sarah Palin ‘believed Queen was in charge of British forces in Iraq’

Another article from the Daily Telegraph.

I think if the Queen had been in charge, we wouldn’t have had a war in Iraq.

Sarah Palin always strikes me that if she had had a word fight with any of the great wordsmiths, she’d have been metaphorically hung, drawn and quartered.

Basques Want to Join an Independent Scotland

I can’t work out if this was a Spanish joke or not, but it is reported in today’s Times. The leader of one of their political parties has said it and has also waxed lyrical about kilts and said that Edinbrgh should replace Madrid as their capital.

Probably it’s just another way of stating the old adage – You don’t have to be mad to be the leader of a political party, but it helps.

I actually think on a day of such miserable foreign news, the story lightens everything up.

On the other hand it could be a large publicity stunt on behalf of Bilbao-based company CAF, who are building the trams for Edinburgh’s tram system and they want to get it finished and of course get paid. When it does get finished, I suspect that a mixture of Scots, Basques, paella and Scotch will be a good recipe for a party.

Alistair Campbell on Alcoholism

Alistair Campbell has written a Panorama program on alcoholism, which is shown tonight.

As he was responsible for framing a lot of Nulabor policy, is there any connection to the financial mess that the Blair and Brown governments left us is.

Just looking at various cabinet ministers of the last fifty years or so, you can tell that some don’t have the healthiest of lifestyles.

How I Met Lady Lucan

Now this is not the wife of the infamous 7th Earl who disappeared, but the wife of the 6th Earl.

At the time we were living in a flat in St. John’s Wood and she was canvassing for the Labour Party.

Nuclear Dilemmas

The Times today reports that an independent Scotland under the SNP would want no part of the Trident nuclear missiles based at Faslane. So this would mean we’d need to build new facilities in England. The extra cost would mean that those arguing against Trident replacement be helped greatly.

I actually think that we should scrap Trident and if we needed to keep a nuclear deterrent, we should use cruise missiles fired from a vessel like an Astute class submarine.

But the bigger nuclear diemma is over nuclear power. It is being reported that today, David Cameron and Nicholas Sarkozy will sign a wide ranging treaty which among other things enables new nuclear power stations in the UK.

But Francois Hollande has said, that if he wins the French Presidency, he’ll scrap nuclear power in France. Remember that Scotland will need nuclear power, when the wind doesn’t blow.

Let’s have some engineers in politics.

Type Santorum into Google

This idea was broadcast on Fighting Talk this morning. You don’t get what you expect, but the result of a spat between Rick Santorum and someone who disagrees with his views.

It is a masterful illustration of how to use the power of Google.

If you have a nervous disposition, make sure you have a small glass of Scotland’s finest to hand.
