Justice – Texas Style
This article from the respected TIME Magazine is chilling.
It further supports my view that no civilised nation should use the death penalty. After all, the three biggest users of ths cruel punishment are China, Iran and the United States. America may think they are civilised and many Americans are, but whilst some states still use this cruel punishment, that deserves to be in the dustbin of history, they can’t all call themselves so. I had hopes that Obama would get rid of the death penalty, especially as most of those executed or likely to be so are Afro-Americans. He is rapidly losing any respect I might have had for him.

A Deal for Obama
Every day, I get masses of useless spam e-mails from his country. I’ve had five this morning trying to sell me a set of kitchen knives. Actually for other reasons, shouldn’t selling knives by mail-order be illegal. It might even be! See BBC Watchdog for details.
So here’s the deal.
We’ll put our best engineers and scientists on the solving of the oil spill, if he puts his best lawyers and computer programmers on the problem of spam.
Doesn’t he realise that spam is one of the reasons many people don’t like the United States! Nothing you do seems to stop it, as much is actually legal in the States, but spammers ignore the law.
Thinking about this more, I’d include the large number of unwanted phone calls <I get from the States as well trying to sell me cruises and useless shares. Those ignore the Telephone preference Service< which should mean I don’t get any unwanted calls. But then Americans aren’t bound by UK law or even common decency.

Obama Gets It Wrong
The Gulf oil spill is no 9/11. What’s he going to do, invade London?
Obama has lost it.
It was an accident and given the number of rigs drilling in the Gulf, the odds are it would happen. BP just got unlucky and Obama got someone to blame. I bet if it had been Chevron or Texaco, he’d have a different view.
America must cure its addiction to fossil fuels.

We’ll Take Your Talent
I play real tennis at Cambridge University and count several academics amongst my opponents. Some are from abroad and have come to the University to get experience in their field.
Now that President Obama has rediscovered and refunded science in the United States, I suspect that the UK may start to worry that our best scientists may be tempted abroad. Especially, if this article in The Times is right in saying that they will be targeted if the UK cuts university funding.
Science in all its forms is our future and we cut our funding of it at our peril.

The United States Thinks High-Speed Trains
I’ve always felt that the United States is ideal for high-speed trains. Many of the journeys that people do by air or car are between large cities a couple of hundred miles apart. But for some reason no-one in the States seemed to feel that way. But now Barack Obama has provided $8billion of funding to kick start high-speed rail.
This paragraph is from an article by the Intelligent Optimist.
And perhaps the best part is that to get there we are going to create a lot of jobs. The California High-Speed Rail Authority estimates that building the new railroad will create more than 600,000 construction-related jobs while there will be an estimated demand for an additional 450,000 permanent jobs in the state once the system is fully built. That’s real economic stimulus in a time when that’s needed the most.
That’s a lot of jobs.

Obama Says Security Failed
I was one of millions who said it yesterday and now Barack Obama says it.
President Barack Obama has said a systemic failure allowed a known extremist with explosives to get onto a US-bound plane last week.
Mr Obama said he considered the intelligence and security failures to be “totally unacceptable”.
I have never had any direct contact with the so-called security services either here, in Europe or the United States. But I have heard quite a few horrendous tales of incompetence, especially where their computing is concerned.
As to the computing that is to be expected, as most government computer systems either don’t work or are very much over budget and so late that they are out-of-date before they are introduced. Who’s to say that the security services machines are as on-the-ball as those of say Ryanair? Are they independently audited for a start?
But to return to the case of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was flagged up to the security services at least a month before he was due to travel by his worried father and he was also banned from Britain. As he had a valid Nigerian passport and US visa, surely this should have been shown up when he booked his flight.
So one computer wasn’t talking to another!
But we are not talking massive numbers as only hundreds of thousands are on these watch database, not millions. We’re also talking genuine passports, which have numbers.
So did someone get a digit wrong?

Paddy Ashdown on Afghanisthan
Paddy Ashdown talked a lot of sense about Afghanisthan on Kate Silverton’s program this morning on Radio 5. After all he’s been a soldier, a spy, a successful politician and the High Representative in Bosnia.
For the next few days, you can listen to it on the BBC’s web site.
All politicians should be made to listen to it again and again.
I think that the most important point he made was that there is no real overall plan in Afghanisthan. In fact, he said that fifteen different countries had fifteen different plans.
Obama should knock a few heads together and get that plan.

Obama Commutes a Death Sentence
I am someone who believes that capital punishment should never be used, no matter what the circumstances. So I was pleased to see that Barack Obama had used his prerogative to pardon someon under sentence of death.
Obama spares Thanksgiving turkey from the death penalty with a presidential pardon
Following in the Thanksgiving tradition of many U.S. presidents, President Obama issued a presidential pardon sparing Courage from the death penalty.
Courage is a 45 pound turkey from New Jersey.
President Obama commented that some presidents actually ate the turkeys they had pardoned, but that “thanks to the intervention of Malia and Sasha cuz I was ready to eat this sucker Courage will also be spared this terrible and delicious fate.”
Courage will be flown to California to serve as Grand Marshall in the Disneyland Thanksgiving Day parade. In the event that Courage is unable to perform his duties, a second turkey named Carolina was also pardoned.
Both Courage and Carolina were donated by the National Turkey Federation.
After the Thanksgiving Day parade, both turkeys will reside at Frontierland at Disneyland.
Obama’s mock pardon of the turkey is the 1st pardon he has issued since taking office. He has not used the presidential pardon power to pardon any real offenders nor has he commuted anyone’s sentence at this time.
The article was from the Legal News Examiner.
But isn’t it about time, he did something about the death penalty.

The Trial of Khaled Sheikh Mohammed
The attacks of September 11th will always leave an indelible mark on my mind.
It is absolutely right that he is being brought to trial in a civilian court on the mainland of the United States. Just because someone is accused of probably the worst crime of this century, it doesn’t mean that he should not be given the same rights as to someone who has committed a much lesser crime. In both cases too, we should ensure that the standard of justice is impeccable.
In fact, you could argue that we should make sure that terrorists are tried by the best judges, prosecuted by the best and most persuasive lawyers and defended by the most innovative and most-respected counsel, as we must attempt to persuade the terrorists followers, that what they did was completely wrong. If there is any chance of a bias or a mistake in the trial, then you will act as a recruiting sergeant.
What is not right is for President Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, to call for the death penalty. For a start, I believe strongly that the death penalty should have been consigned to the dustbin of history many years ago. I have many reasons, least of which is the fact that miscarriages of justice can’t be rectified. I also believe that just because someone is an objectionable human being, we shouldn’t descend to their level.
So President Obama may have gone up in my estimation by trying Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, but he totally loses respect for calling for the ultimate penalty. Does he want the United States to be bracketed with Iran, China and North Korea as those who feel that the death penalty should be retained and used with relish.
In fact, I suspect that the defendants will want to be executed, as this will give them immortality and more publicity for their vile and backward, nihilistic cause.
He also has a difficult problem to overcome.
According to this article in The Times, Khaled Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times in March 2003. Now that wasn’t down to Obama, but his predecessor. But can anybody tell me what was the point? I’ve met quite a few senior policemen, who have interrogated some of the nastiest criminals. I doubt they would have found that using the same dubious technique that number of times would have been at all productive.
It is probably not the fact that they used the technique that will cause the problem, but the fact that defence counsel will make sure that it is broadcast all round the world.
Those 183 times will be the another impeccably dressed recruiting sergeant for Muslim terrorist organisations.
They may also result in a wrong judgement after the trial. I hope not, as that would be a disaster for us all.

About This Blog
What this blog will eventually be about I do not know.
But it will be about how I’m coping with the loss of my wife and son to cancer in recent years and how I manage with being a coeliac and recovering from a stroke. It will be about travel, sport, engineering, food, art, computers, large projects and London, that are some of the passions that fill my life.
And hopefully, it will get rid of the lonely times, from which I still suffer.
Why Anonymous? That’s how you feel at times.
