Up And Down The Dubrovnik Cable Car

I took these pictures as I rode the Dubrovnik Cable Car.

The island beyond the city is Lokrum.

I have this feeling that if you timed it right, the light could be very good on the way down.

Riding The Cable Car

I hadn’t ridden the Emirates Air-Line for some time, so I thought it would be a good idea on Sunday.

As you can see, I got a car to myself.

I think the trouble with the line, is that it is pushed at tourists, who don’t realise that the cheapest way to cross it, is by the use of an Oyster card.

But it doesn’t appear to accept cashless payment, which as this is most of London’s preferred payment method, probably doesn’t help ridership.

Let’s face it, who in their right mind would use Oyster? I have a Freedom Pass, so I don’t need Oyster, but I do get peeved that I have to carry one with perhaps twenty pounds on it, just so I can use the cable-car.

The Pollution Didn’t Seem To Be Too Bad!

To check on the forecast pollution, I took some pictures this morning and early afternoon.

I started by taking a 56 bus, which is one of the Dalston omnibuses, to St. Paul’s, where I mounted on One New Change.

I then took the DLR from Bank to Royal Victoria, from where I took the cable car to North Greenwich.

I finished the journey by taking the Underground to Chalk Farm from where I walked to the top of Primrose Hill.

I also found this page on the DEFRA web site, which gives a pollution forecast.

The Cable Car Was Busy

The Emirates Air Line has been criticised for low usage lately.

However, this picture shows that the sun brings out the punters.

Later, I was able to have my first outdoor cup of tea.

In fact, the only problem was the breeze made it difficult to control the bills.

The Closed Thames Barrier From The Cable Car

I took these pictures from the Emirates Air Line.

They clearly show that the Thames Barrier is closed, as it has been for much of this year.

Has The Rain Stopped For A Bit?

I took this picture from the Emirates Air-Line this morning.

Let’s hope we’re getting a break from this awful rain!

Over The Cable Car In The Sun

I haven’t been over the Emirates Air Line for some time, but I’m glad I did today.

The visibility was pretty good, although hopefully, I’ll find another cold and sunny day when it is better.

Given the right day, it surely is one of the best camera platforms in a city.

It also helped that I caught the cable car at a quiet Sunday morning. This could have been, because many were expecting bad weather and just didn’t go! But remember it opens early in the morning and even starts at 09:00 on a Sunday. So on the right day weatherwise, get there early and choose your time. I got a cabin to myself by being lucky!

And The Balloon Came Too!

It would appear that balloons are allowed on the Emirates Air Line.

In some ways, I always follow instances of balloons on public transport, as at Liverpool University in the 1960s, they were banned on the buses in the city.

I wonder if they still are!

Coming North On The Cable-Car

I usually traverse the cable-car from north to south, but on Sunday, I went the other way, as the DLR wasn’t running to Royal Victoria because of Crossrail works.

Afterwards, I walked to Canning Town station, took the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf for lunch.

Climbing The Rock Of Gibraltar

I didn’t walk up, as there is a cable car.

The views are fairly spectacular, but be warned, that there is only tourist attractions at the top and I needed some tissues and some chocolate and couldn’t buy them.

As you can see, I saw the Barbary macaques, but many who went up later in the rain didn’t, as just like us, they probably don’t like rain. The macaques are true monkeys and not apes.  Although unlike some species of monkeys they didn’t seem to be trying too hard to steal from and annoy visitors. I didn’t hear one human alarm call, whilst on the Rock.

Visiting the macagues is a very different wildlife experience, as you just walk around them, whilst both species observe the other.  I even saw a couple in the town below.

It was quite a long walk on the top of the Rock, but as it was generally downhill, I managed it. However, because of the rain and my rhinitis, I was having difficulty with maintaining a good pace.  Luckily, there were a few places to sit.

Eventually, I found a bus stop and got a bus back to the main bus terminal, from where I took a shuttle taxi back to Oriana.
