Whose Side Are They On?

This is the title of a leader in The Times today, questioning the motives of those who belong to the British Syrian Society.  The co-chairman is Sir Andrew Green, who is always popping up on the media as spokesman for MigrationWatchUK.

Surely he has a conflict of interest here, as the actions of President Assad against the Syrian Uprising, must surely mean we’re going to get more immigrants. Let’s face it, if I was in Syria now, I’d be digging my way out like crazy. Even a slum in some of the worst places in Europe or the United States would be better, than the life I’d be leading now.

The Cloud-Cuckoo Land That is Republican Politics

I’ve just looked at this page on the BBC web site, which sets out the policies of the various Republican candidates, who might stand against President Obama. It looks like they are all against same-sex marriage and abortion, for cutting immigration into the United States, making everybody pay for their own health care and reducing tax rates to companies.

I can’t think of any past or present British politician, except for perhaps the BNP, who would promote such a toxic mix of electoral suicide.

But then the United States is different and you sort out your own problems.

It goes without saying, that no-one would be in favour of improving the justice and penal system and abolishing the death penalty.  But then most Americans believe in vengeance and not justice.

As I’ve said Barack Obama has been a disappointment to me, but he’s orders of magnitude better than this psychotic bunch.

One Birmingham Is Enough

andrew Green of Migration Watch has just said that if the net migration continues at the current level, we’ll need a new city the size of Birmingham every year or so.

Surely one Birmingham is enough!

Immigration and Bad Food Induced Health Problems

David Cameron did one important thing in his speech and that was lay out facts. People will argue he has been selective, but at least he tried.

I live in Inner London and as I’m a double immigrant in the 1800s, I can’t really moan about immigrants can I?  But I do get fed up with the proliferation of junk food shops everywhere, often staffed by exploited low-wage earning people with dodgy immigration status. These establishments also are constantly putting flyers for gluten-rich food through my door. I  am getting a notice made that politely asks the delivery people to put them in the wheelie bin by the door, to save me the trouble.

So perhaps we should make junk food more expensive for health reasons and to combat obesity.  The easiest way to do this would be to impose a high minimum wage for those who work in the fast food industry.  And then make sure it is strictly enforced!

Prudence does Stupidity

We’ve all come out of disastrous meetings and thought about saying something derogatory about the person or persons we have just met.  But we all know you might give a colleague a knowing look, that can’t be overseen, but you never say anything that might be overheard.

So when Gordon Brown accuses Gillan Duffy of being a bigot, he was being stupid.  Not for saying what he said, but for saying it when he did. After all, he had been miked up by the media, so to forget that he was, perhaps showed that he is not the sharpest knife in the NuLabor box.

Well!  Perhaps he might be, judging by the daft policies they keep trying to implement.

Bigot is perhaps a strong word to call Gillian Duffy, but then she may be typical of many who resent the number of East Europeans who have come to the UK in recent years.

But has it ever been thus?

I am descended from Jews on my father’s side and Huguenots on my mother’s.  We absorbed a very large six figure number of Poles after the Second World War and countless immigrants from the Commonwealth since.

Some come, some go home, some settle and some move on.

Remember too, that some of the largest inflow in recent years to the UK have been from countries like France and Spain.

Do we complain about them?

Getting an Australian Visa

Some years ago, my late wife and I went to Australia.  It was actually a flying holiday, where I hired a Piper Arrow and flew all around the wider south-east of the country.  We flew a roundabout route from Sydney via Mildura, Adelaide, Cooper Pede, Yulara, Alice Springs, Mount Isa, Cairns, Dunk Island, Mackay, Brisbane and Goondawindi.  It took about three weeks and was a very enjoyable trip.

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the trip was that in the first few days in Sydney, I had to pass the exams for my pilots licence.  It would have been divorce if I’d failed.  But then I don’t fail, when there is no plan B.

But to get the visa for Australia, you had to go to the High Commission and wait in line.

For this trip, I just did it over the Internet.  It worked very smoothly.

A Small Note on a Grim History

I had to pick up a friend from the ferry at Harwich after football and whilst waiting I noticed the following.

Kindertransport Plaque at Harwich

Kindertransport Plaque at Harwich

We mustn’t forget what happened.  Especially, with all the troubles around the world.

I have no religion, but my family is a potent mix of Jew and Huguenot.  They all came to Britain because of oppression.

Can anybody say that refugees in the past have not enriched our country and it’s culture?
