Gaddafi Gets a Good Kicking

Gaddafi’s attempts to recapture Brega seemed to be a real defeat, as his forces seem to have no stomach for a fight.

Let’s hope he sees sense and gives up.

He could also go to live with his friend Robert Mugabe.  They deserve each other.  but their unfortunate citizens don’t!

The Glasgow Premier League

Who’d be a real football fan in Scotland, as the system is such, that unless you’re Celtic or Rangers no-one else gets a look in.

They will play each other seven times this year and if the other matches are like last night’s ill-tempered affair, how long will it be, before Scottish football fans turn to other sports or the television set in even greater numbers.

But then Rangers against Celtic is not about football. I live close to the Emirates and do we see any trouble, except for a bit of traffic congestion on match days.  So peaceful, well-attended matches can be arranged without either an overwhelming police presence or trouble in the UK. So a few clubs do cause the odd problems, but the troublemakers are usually measured in hundreds at the most.  And we rarely get matches in England with three players sent off.

One thing I object to is that the BBC, give Rangers/Celtic matches a lot of coverage on both TV and radio, when often there is a more important match or another sport that would be preferred by most people in the UK.  If I want to see a fight, then I’d prefer to watch a decent boxing match.

When Is It Going To Get Warmer?

I’ve just watched the weather forecast and although it might be sunnier today, it is unlikely that the temperature will make double figures.

But at least my house is warm!

One problem is that I took my warm coat to the laundry because it was so filthy and I haven’t got it back yet.

I don’t think I have ever known such a period of wretched weather in the UK.

The weathergirl on BBC London also appears to be trying to warm, at least the males up, by wearing a short dress with a low neckline, dark tights and high heels.

John Galliano

John Galliano may be a great fashion designer, but his comments lately in Paris are disgraceful and he was rightly fired by Dior.

Remember that Hitler was also anti-homosexual and not just anti-Jewish, so in some ways his comments are even more ignorant than they appear in the first place.

But knowing the fashion industry, he’ll be back, as money talks louder than morals.

I for one, hope he doeasn’t make a comeback.  Or at least until he’s seen the multiple errors of his ways.

Travelling is More Eye-Opening than Reading

On an item on the BBC this morning about why Chinese tourists visit Clarks Shoes in Street, the title of this post was quoted by a Chinese interviewee.

The quote is from Confucius and I quite like it.

There is more on the story here in the Daily Mail.

Iran Threatens to Boycott the London Olympics

If they didn’t come, will they be missed?  I suppose they are favourites to win one of the special putty metals for being undemocratic along with North Korea, Zimbabwe and Libya.

Who Nicked A Mobile Phone Network?

Apparently thieves have stolen some crucial hardware from Vodafone, causing thousands to lose their service.

I suspect that many will think this is something more sinister than just simple theft, but I wouldn’t think it’s linked to anything like the company’s shutting down of their Egyptian network.

Could it be just for the copper? Or the other expensive metals in the equipment? If it is, we’ll probably be seeing other attempts at this type of theft.

The Telegraph are musing over the questions in this article.

The Times Saturday Magazine.

I usually read this from cover-to-cover as I take the train to the football, like I did on last Saturday.

It had two particularly good articles, that I will highlight here.

Melanie Reid was on her usual top form and was particularly annoyed that her story had been hijacked by the Christian Right. I prefer to call them the Christian Wrong, as when it comes to moral philosophy, any that calls itself right, is probably not open to criticism from a scientific-correctness point-of-view.  If Jesus did exist, and in my view if he did, he was just one of a number of good moral philosophers that are always around, then he wouldn’t be on the right like Sarah Palin and the Mad Hatters.

Carol Midgley was ranting about airport duty-free shopping.  She was absolutely right and it should be banned. Many duty-free purchases are carried half-way round the world and how much carbon dioxide does this add to the atmosphere? You also have the madness that say Scotch Whisky is air-freighted to places like Hong Kong for sale in duty-free shops there and then bought by Scots and other UK residents for the flight back.

What Does Her Majesty Think?

The King’s Speech has done well at the Oscars, winning four awards for best picture, best actor, best director and best screenplay.

The Queen has been known to have found the film moving.

We will probably never know what she feels officially, but these recently released pictures, show how close she was to her father.

Popbitch on Libya

You can always rely on Popbitch to come up with an unusual take on the most serious of stories.  This was in today’s edition.

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi has requested to be returned from Libya to prison in Scotland for his safety…

I wouldn’t think it’s true, but it could easily be argued that even the most violent prison in Scotland will be much safer than Libya.
