Fast Battery-Electric Hitachi Trains Between Paddington And Bristol Temple Mead Stations

It was when I was writing Thoughts On Lumo’s Proposed Paddington And Paignton Service, that I realised how significant Hitachi’s battery-electric high speed trains will be.

This page on the Hitachi web site gives this overview of their Intercity Battery Trains.

A quick and easy application of battery technology is to install it on existing or future Hitachi intercity trains. Hitachi Rail’s modular design means this can be done without the need to re-engineer or rebuild the train and return them to service as quickly as possible for passengers.

Replacing one diesel engine with just one battery reduces emissions by more than 20% and offers cost savings of 20-30%. Our intercity battery powered trains can cover 70km on non-electrified routes, operating at intercity speeds at the same or increased performance.

For the purpose of this exercise, I will assume the following.

  • All trains are five-car trains.
  • They were all originally manufactured as Class 800, 802 or 805 trains.
  • They were all originally manufactured with three  750 kW Rolls-Royce mtu diesel generators.
  • One diesel generator in each train has been replaced by a 750 kW battery-pack of the same size, weight and performance.

According to Hitachi’s web page, that I quote above, this gives intercity speeds at the same or increased performance, for 70 km. on non-electrified routes.

I will now look at how a Hitachi battery-electric high speed train would handle the line between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Mead stations.

This OpenRailwayMap shows the electrification between Chippenham and Bath Spa stations.

Note.

  1. London Paddington and Bristol Temple Mead stations are 118.3 miles apart.
  2. The blue arrow indicates Bath Spa station.
  3. Bristol Temple Meads station is 11.5 miles to the West of Bath Spa station.
  4. Chippenham station is in the North East corner of the map.
  5. Black lines are not electrified.
  6. Red lines are electrified with 25 KVAC overhead wires.
  7. The 93.9 miles betweeen London Paddington and Chippenham is fully-electrified.
  8. Red and black dotted lines are being electrified.
  9. The 24.4 miles between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Mead stations is not electrified.
  10. The residents of Bath Spa are not keen for the railway through Bath to be electrified.

The single battery-pack in the train, will have to propel the train between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Mead stations.

  • On arrival at Chippenham, the battery will have been fully charged on the 93.9 miles from London Paddington.
  • The train will be switched to battery power and proceed through Bath Spa station to Bristol Temple Meads station.
  • The 24.4 miles between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Mead stations is only 39.26 km. so it is well within range of a single battery pack.
  • The trains will be able to reach Bath, as fast as the track allows, so they could have come much of the way from London Paddington at speeds approaching 125 mph.

Hence my belief that Bath Spa could be reached in around an hour without any stops from London  Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads in a very fast time.

There may be a need to top up the battery at Bristol Temple Meads station for London trains to return to the electrification at Chippenham or for other trains to continue their journey through Bristol.

This could be handled by some lengths of electrification in platforms in Bristol Temple Meads station,  where the Hitachi trains terminate.

However, I feel Network Rail will be able to avoid the sensitive and possibly very challenging electrification through Bath.

Conclusion

London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads via Bath Spa trains would be substantially speeded up. Especially, if the first stop out of London Paddington were to be Bath Spa station.

Great Western Railway would only cut out the stops if they wanted to speed up services.

Who’d have thought, that powering services by batteries, would speed up services?

Thoughts On Lumo’s Proposed Paddington And Paignton Service

Modern Railways says this about Lumo’s proposed new service between Paddington and Paignton.

Under the plans for Paignton, announced on 5 December, there would be five return Lumo trains running between Paddington and Paignton, serving Bath Spa, Bristol Temple Meads, Taunton, Exeter St David’s and Torquay. These could start in May 2028. A sixth path is planned between Highbridge & Burnham and London Paddington.

Modern Railways says that currently there are only three direct trains between Torbay and London and that rail has a 29% modal share on that route compared to 71% for road.

Modern Railways tell us that GWR current run three trains per day to Paignton and these call at Reading, Newbury, Hungerford, Pewsey, Westbury, Castle Cary, Taunton, Tiverton Parkway and Exeter St. David’s and Torquay.

Note.

  1. Lumo will be taking five stops using a longer route.
  2. GWR currently take ten stops using a shorter route via Westbury.
  3. GWR currently take ten stops between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads.
  4. The fastest GWR service I can find takes three hours and four minutes between London Paddington and Paignton.
  5. The fastest GWR service I can find takes one hour and thirty-five minutes between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads.
  6. The fastest service I can find takes one hour and thirty-nine minutes with five stops between Bristol Temple Meads and Paignton.
  7. Lumo’s trains will probably be fitted with traction batteries rather than diesel engines, so it is likely, that the fewer stops they execute will be done quieter and faster.

I would not be at all surprised to find that Lumo’s journey times would be of this order.

  • London Paddington and Bath Spa – One hour
  • London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads – One hour and thirty minutes
  • London Paddington and Taunton – Two hours
  • London Paddington and Exeter St. David’s – Two hours and thirty minutes
  • London Paddington and Torquay – Two hours and fifty minutes
  • Paddington and Paignton – Three hours

These sections would not be electrified.

  • Chippenham and Bristol Temple Meads – 24.4 miles
  • Bristol Temple Meads and Paignton – 103.8 miles

In Fast Battery-Electric Hitachi Trains Between Paddington And Bristol Temple Mead Stations, I discuss how Lumo and Great Western Railway will speed trains to Bristol Temple Meads via Bath Spa and Chippenham.

If 128.2 miles on batteries sounds a tough ask, remember that a similar-sized Stadler Addu ran 139 miles on one charge in 2021. Lumo, Hitachi and their battery makers from Sunderland didn’t enter this contest to come a distant second.

Paignton has a big advantage, as this OpenRailwayMap shows.

Note.

  1. Paignton station is marked by the blue arrow and writing at the top of the map.
  2. There are two platforms, one of which normally handles arrivals and the other departures.
  3. There are the Goodrington Carriage sidings to the South of the station.

I’m sure Hitachi will electrify some of the sidings, so that Lumo’s trains can leave Paignton with full batteries. But they only need enough charge to cover the 128.2 miles to Chippenham!

I have a few extra thoughts.

The Train’s Batteries Will Get Bigger

Hitachi must have access to the best battery chemistry, that the world and especially Japan can offer.

I feel very strongly, that the performance of Hitachi’s trains will get better, as the years progress.

Pairs Of Trains Could Be Used

I suspect all the stations that will be used by the service ; Paddington, Bath Spa, Bristol Temple Meads, Taunton, Exeter St David’s, Torquay and Paignton can handle a pair of five-car Hitachi trains on a busy day.

The Goodrington Carriage sidings at Paignton station would certainly appear to be long enough.

This could be useful.

An Early Bath

Consider.

  • Currently, the fastest trains to Bath Spa take one hour and fourteen minutes from London Paddington.
  • But the trains do make as many as three stops at Reading, Swindon and Chippenham, before they stop at Bath Spa.
  • London Paddington and Bath Spa are 106.8 miles apart.
  • The route is fully electrified between London Paddington and Chippenham.

This is an average speed of 86.6 mph.

Lumo will have two advantages

  • They will be making Bath Spa the first stop.
  • They will be able to maintain at least 100 mph for a large part of the route between London Paddington and Bath Spa, by the use of traction batteries, where there are no wires.
  • To go between London Paddington and Bath Spa in an hour, requires an average speed of 106.8 mph

If they could average 100 mph, the time would be 66 minutes.

Bath Spa may not be an hour from Paddington, but it will be very close to it.

I would expect that a fast service to Bath could fill up with day-trippers.

How Long Will A Round Trip Take?

If I’m right that Lumo’s battery-electric high speed trains will be able to do one-way in three hours, then adding in half-an-hour to turn and charge  the train at Paignton would suggest a six-an-a-half hour round trip.

How Many Trains Will Be Needed For A Full Service?

Lumo are talking of five round trips per day to Paignton and one to Highbridge & Burnham, so this would probably need two trains to run the service.

The Wikipedia entry for Highbridge & Burnham station says this.

A loop on the west side of the line south of the station can be used by goods trains in either direction, southbound trains crossing over to run wrong line through the northbound No.2 platform to do so. This crossing also allows terminating passenger trains from the north to reverse here if required.

Perhaps this loop will be used to allow one train to start from here in the morning and at the end of the day stable here overnight.

The loop could be electrified to make sure that the first train of the day gets to Chippenham.

Trains could follow a schedule like this.

  • Train 1 – Leaves Highbridge & Burnham – 06:00
  • Train 1 – Arrives London Paddington – 08:00
  • Train 1 – Leaves London Paddington – 08:30
  • Train 1 – Arrives Paignton – 11:30
  • Train 1 – Leaves Paignton – 12:00
  • Train 1 – Arrives London Paddington – 15:00
  • Train 1 – Leaves London Paddington – 15:30
  • Train 1 – Arrives Paignton – 18:30
  • Train 1 – Leaves Paignton – 19:00
  • Train 1 – Arrives London Paddington – 22:00
  • Train 2 – Leaves London Paddington – 06:30
  • Train 2 – Arrives Paignton – 09:30
  • Train 2 – Leaves Paignton – 10:00
  • Train 2 – Arrives London Paddington – 13:00
  • Train 2 – Leaves London Paddington – 13:30
  • Train 2 – Arrives Paignton – 16:30
  • Train 2 – Leaves Paignton – 17:00
  • Train 2 – Arrives London Paddington – 20:00
  • Train 2 – Leaves London Paddington – 20:30
  • Train 2 – Arrives Highbridge & Burnham – 22:30

Someone with more experience of writing timetables could make this work.

But it does appear to me, that using Highbridge & Burnham station for an early start and an overnight charge of one of the trains could mae the whole service work.

Leisure Market Boom? GWR’s Vision For Direct Bristol-Oxford Services

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Rail Magazine.

This is the first paragraph.

Great Western Railway has hopes on running direct services between Bristol Temple Meads and Oxford from September 14, subject to approval of its new trial proposal by the Department for Transport and Network Rail. The move is a test of growth in demand for leisure travel by train.

It is an interesting idea.

These are some points about the service, given in the article.

  • The route will be via Swindon, Chippenham and Bath Spa.
  • Fastest journey time would be 71 minutes.
  • The route will be aimed at the leisure market.
  • There will be two trains per day (tpd) in each direction on Saturdays.

This is GWR’s handy route map.

These are my thoughts.

Will The Trains Call At Didcot Parkway?

This OpenRailwayMap shows Didcot Parkway station and the large triangular junction, that connects Oxford to the Great Western Main Line.

Note.

  1. The red tracks are the Great Western Main Line.
  2. The blue arrow indicates Didcot Parkway station.
  3. Oxford station is about ten miles to the North.
  4. Chords in the junction allow trains to go between Oxford and Paddington and Oxford and Swindon, with or without a stop at Didcot Parkway station.

The article says that GWR  has asked to run the following services.

  • 1018 Bristol Temple Meads-Oxford – Would arrive at Oxford at 1129.
  • 1155 Oxford-Bristol Temple Meads (via Didcot) – Would arrive at Bristol Temple Meads at 1306.
  • 1518 Bristol Temple Meads-Oxford – Would arrive at Oxford at 1629.
  • 1712 Oxford-Bristol Temple Meads – Would arrive at Bristol Temple Meads at 1823.

Note.

  1. I suspect that the 1155 will reverse at Didcot Parkway station.
  2. There is a two train per hour (tph) service between Didcot Parkway and London Paddington stations.
  3. It looks like the four services could be run by a single train shuttling up the Great Western Main Line.

Would it be sensible if all Oxford and Bristol trains called at Didcot Parkway station, so that travellers could use the London service to their advantage?

But, calling at Didcot Parkway station would slow the service as there would need to be a reverse.

What Class Of Train Would Be Used?

Consider.

  • A Bristol and Didcot Parkway via Bath Spa service takes 55 minutes.
  • This is an average speed of 71.1 mph over a distance of 65.2 miles.
  • 24.4 miles at the Bristol end of the route is not electrified.
  • 10.3 miles at the Oxford end of the route is not electrified.
  • The four services can be run by a single train shuttling up the Great Western Main Line.

It looks to me, that a bi-mode train with good performance is needed.

So I suspect that a five-car Class 800 or Class 802 train will be used.

Will The Train Be Battery-Electric Powered?

This is an interesting possibility.

  • An ideal route for a battery electric train, is surely one with a long electrified section in the middle, which can be used to fully charge the train’s batteries.
  • The train would have to run for 48.8 miles on its own power at the Bristol end of the route.
  • The train would have to run for 20.6 miles on its own power at the Oxford end of the route.

The data sheet for a battery-electric Class 800/802 train can be downloaded from this page on the Hitachi web site.

In a section on the page, which is entitled Intercity Battery Trains, this is said.

The range of 70 km is 43.5 miles, which would appear to be a little bit short to go from the end of the electrification at Chippenham to Bristol Temple Meads and back.

But various measures could be taken to make sure the train can handle the route.

  • The regenerative braking strategy could be used to conserve battery power.
  • A second battery could be added to the train.
  • Methods to charge the train at Bristol Temple Meads could be installed.

As London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads is an important route, I suspect that Hitachi and Great Western Railway have a strategy to handle trains from Chippenham and sending them back.

Could This Route Be A Trial Route For Battery-Electric Trains?

Consider.

  • Hitachi and Great Western Railway wouldn’t want to introduce an unreliable train without full full testing.
  • Trains can probably limp to either Stoke Gifford or Reading depots, after a battery failure.
  • Great Western Railway could test a new route.
  • A full test only needs one train.
  • Passenger reaction to a battery-electric train can be assessed.
  • Staff need to be trained.
  • The route can be run by a standard bi-mode if required.
  • It could be the world’s first high-speed battery-electric train.
  • Enthusiasts would flock to have a ride.

Could this be a trial service to make sure everything goes right?

Portway Park & Ride Station – 10th August 2023

Portway Park & Ride station, opened on the first of this month, so I went to visit today.

Note.

  1. The Portway Park & Ride is served by both buses and trains.
  2. Buses serve the City Centre and rugby and football at Ashton Gate stadium.
  3. Trains serve Avonmouth, Bristol Temple Meads, Severn Beach, Weston-super-Mare and a large number of other Bristol stations.

The M5 crosses over the railway to the West of the station.

This Google Map shows the M5 and the Portway Park & Ride.

Note.

  1. The M5 goes diagonally SW-NE across the map.
  2. The wide river is the Avon.
  3. Portway Park & Ride with its station is in the middle of the bottom of the map.
  4. Avonmouth station is in the North-West corner of the map.

The Portway Park & Ride seems to be an extremely well-connected Park & Ride.

These are my thoughts.

Are There Any Other Park & Ride Sites, Where A Station Could Be Added?

Consider.

Has Portway Park & Ride been developed to see if sites served by buses and trains are a good idea?

Is Portway Park & Ride The Solution To Big Matches At Ashton Gate?

Consider.

  • Ashton Gate Stadium has a capacity of 27,000.
  • Wikipedia says that buses from Portway Park & Ride are used to bring supporters to games.
  • The platform at Portway Park & Ride might be able to take a five-car Class 802 train for a big match.

I wouldn’t be surprised that Portway Park & Ride has been designed for large crowds at big matches at Ashton Gate.

A Diversion To Severn Beach

After my trip to Cardiff yesterday was curtailed by a signalling problem, I ended up at Bristol Temple Meads station.

After checking the timetable, it occurred to me, that it would be easy to take a diversion to Severn Beach station before I took a train back to London.

I took these pictures on the journey.

Note.

  1. Stapleton Road station has massive ramps.
  2. Stations like Redland and Avonmouth have interesting art works.
  3. The Avon, several wind turbines and the Secon Severn Crossing can all be seen.

  5. The fare from Bristol Temple Meads was only £1.95 for a return with my Senior Railcard.

Severn Beach looks to be a good place to go for a walk.

We need more ice  cream sellers in or near stations.

Portway Park & Ride Station

Portway Park & Ride station is a new station currently under construction.

I took these pictures as the train passed.

This Google Map shows the location of the station.

Note.

  1. The parking is to the South of where the M5 and A4 cross.
  2. The blue dot at the South of the site marks the single-platform station.
  3. The buses from the Park & Ride run every twelve minutes.
  4. The trains are only an hourly service.

From the pictures, it looks like the station will be opening soon.

I would hope that the access to the parking from the major roads is good.

Improving The Line

I was a bit worried that I’d miss the train back, so I only had an ice cream, but if the trains were more frequent, I might have had a drink in the cafe as well.

Under Future in the Wikipedia entry for the Severn Beach Line, the following is said about train frequency.

Improved services along the line are called for as part of the Greater Bristol Metro scheme, a rail transport plan which aims to enhance transport capacity in the Bristol area. There is an aspiration for half-hourly services, however due to the large sections of single-track and the congested main line from Temple Meads, such frequency is not currently feasible. However, it is expected that with the four-tracking of Filton Bank, including the Severn Beach line between Temple Meads and Narroways Hill Junction, that there will be sufficient capacity to allow half-hourly services.

Two trains per hour (tph) would be a good improvement.

This is also said.

Plans also call for the reopening of the Henbury Loop Line, which could allow a service from Temple Meads to Bristol Parkway via the Severn Beach line.

After my experiences yesterday, a more frequent route between the two major Bristol stations must be a good idea.

Zero-Carbon Trains

Given the route and its length and location, the Severn Beach Line must be a candidate for battery or hydrogen power.

One Of The Worst Train Journeys I’ve Had In The UK Since The 1960s

I started out with a simple objective, in that I intended to go to Cardiff Central station and then explore the Cardiff Valley Lines to look at the progress of the electrification. I had also arranged to possibly have a drink, with an old acquaintance at Rhymney station.

For the first time, I took the Elizabeth Line from Moorgate to Paddington to catch a long distance train. It is so much easier than taking the Underground.

I bought a Super Off Peak Return ticket to Cardiff Central station for £62.15 with my Senior Railcard.

This was the journey I took today.

  • I left Paddington on the 10:18 train for Cardiff Central.
  • The train arrived at Bristol Parkway at 11:34½.
  • Real Time Trains says this about the rest of the journey. “This service was cancelled between Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central due to a problem with signalling equipment (J3)”
  • I was advised by a member of staff, that I wouldn’t be going to Cardiff in the near future and he advised taking a CrossCountry train to Bristol Temple Meads and then going back to London using my Return ticket.
  • I left Bristol Parkway at 12:12¼ and arrived in Bristol Temple Meads at 12:20½, after taking the CrossCountry train.
  • At Bristol Temple Meads to salvage something of a wasted day, I took a diversion to Severn Beach for the princely sum of £1.95 with my Senior Railcard, arriving back at Bristol Temple Meads at 14:48½.
  • I then caught the next train to London, which turned out to be the 16:00, as both the 15:00 and 15:30 were cancelled due to an incident at Didcot.
  • The train left Bristol Temple Meads at 16:03 and arrived at London Paddington at 18:00, which was twenty minutes late.

Note.

  1. I never got to Cardiff.
  2. If I’d waited at Bristol Parkway and caught the next train, I’d have got to Cardiff at 16:15¼, which would have been four hours later, than if the first train hadn’t been cancelled and had been on time.

I’ve just tried to phone Great Western Railway, but their Contact Us page only gives details of Facebook, Twitter and What’s App. I don’t use any of those!

Bristol Temple Meads Station – 28th July 2020

I took these pictures of Bristol Temple Meads station, when I visited.

Note.

  1. The station is Listed to the highest level of Grade 1.
  2. London services seem to use Platforms 15 and 16.
  3. There is quite a fair bit of space between the tracks.

Bristol Temple Meads Station And Trains With a Battery Capability

Hitachi’s Class 800 train with a battery electric capability or Regional Battery Train, is described in this infographic from the company.

The proposed 90 km or 56 mile range would even be sufficient take a train between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Meads stations on a return trip. So this means that one of these trains could work the London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads stations service via Bath Spa using the electrification between London Paddington and Chippenham stations.

But where could trains reach, if they were able to leave Bristol Temple Meads station with a fully-charged battery?

  • Bristol Parkway – 6 miles
  • Cardiff Central – 5 miles to the electrified Great Western Main Line.
  • Cheltenham Spa – 41 miles
  • Filton Abbey Wood – 4 miles
  • Gloucester – 39 miles
  • Newport – 5 miles to the electrified Great Western Main Line.
  • Severn Beach – 13.5 miles
  • Taunton – 45 miles
  • Westbury – 28.5 miles
  • Weston-super-Mare – 19 miles

Note.

  1. Return trips to Bristol Parkway, Filton Abbey Wood, Severn Beach and Western-super-Mare would be possible.
  2. The other destinations will need charging facilities.

Other local destinations could be added as the Bristol Metro develops.

Note.

  1. The curving nature of the platforms doesn’t make 25 KVAC overhead electrification easy.
  2. Trains to and from London appear to use the two Eastern platforms 13 and 15.
  3. It might be possible to increase platform lengths to run longer trains to and from places like London.

I believe that there are three possible ways of charging the trains in Bristol Temple Meads station.

25  KVAC Overhead Electrification

This could be short length of standard 25 KVAC overhead electrification in platforms, that would be served by trains with pantographs like the Class 800 trains.

The driver would stop in the correct place in the platform and connect the pantograph, whilst waiting in the station.

Note that the Class 800 trains to and from London typically take 35-20 minutes to turn round, which is time enough for a full charge.

750 VDC Third-Rail Electrification

This could be short lengths of standard 750 VDC third-rail electrification in platforms, that would be used by standard third-rail shoes on trains.

The train would connect automatically and charging would take place, whilst waiting in the station.

A Specialist Charging Facility Like Vivarail’s Fast Charge System

Vivarail’s Fast Charge system is described in Vivarail Unveils Fast Charging System For Class 230 Battery Trains.

This extract from this Vivarail press release explains how the system works.

he concept is simple – at the terminus 4 short sections of 3rd and 4th rail are installed and connected to the electronic control unit and the battery bank. Whilst the train is in service the battery bank trickle charges itself from the national grid – the benefit of this is that there is a continuous low-level draw such as an EMU would use rather than a one-off huge demand for power.

The train pulls into the station as normal and the shoe-gear connects with the sections of charging rail. The driver need do nothing other than stop in the correct place as per normal and the rail is not live until the train is in place.

That’s it!

I believe that this system or something like it could be adapted to work with all trains with a battery capability in the UK.

I also believe that this system can be designed so that it is ultra-safe and doesn’t disrupt, the visual impact of the station.

Conclusion

Bath Spa Station – 28th July 2020

I took these pictures as I twice passed through Bath Spa station.

These are my thoughts.

Electrification Gantries On The Platforms

As somebody, whose eyesight is on the wane, I am not a lover of electrification, where the gantries are bolted to the platforms. These pictures show some installations of this type at Crouch Hill station.

Would electrification gantries like these, be appropriate in Bath Spa station?

Could Lightweight Electrification Gantries Be Placed Between The Tracks?

These pictures show the wide gap between the two tracks in Bath Spa station.

Could double-track lightweight structures, based on a design like this be placed between the tracks?

These structures are made out of laminated wood and are surely a possibility.

A Makeover For Bath Spa Station

If you look at much of the woodwork and paint in the fabric of the station, it appears tired and in need of refurbishment.

Whether the station is electrified or not, the station will need a high-class makeover.

Services Through Bath Spa Station

Three train companies run services through Bath Spa station.

There are also some freight services hauled by diesel locomotives.

Trains leave Bath Spa station using one of three routes via either.

Most trains seem to go via Bristol Temple Meads station.

  • The distance between Bristol Temple Meads and Chippenham stations are 24.5 miles.
  • The distance between Bristol Temple Meads and Westbury stations are 28.5 miles.

Neither distance is that long.

An Alternative To Full Electrification

When I look at the distances between Bristol Temple Meads, Chippenham and Westbury stations, they tell me that they are within the range of Hitachi’s Class 800 train with a battery electric capability or Regional Battery Train, which is described in this infographic from the company.

The proposed 90 km or 56 mile range would even be sufficient take a train between Chippenham and Bristol Temple Meads stations on a return trip.

Notes for each station follow.

Bristol Temple Meads

Charging facilities would be needed.

Destinations in battery range would include.

  • Bristol Parkway – 6 miles
  • Cardiff Central – 5 miles to the electrified Great Western Main Line.
  • Cheltenham Spa – 41 miles
  • Gloucester – 39 miles
  • Taunton – 45 miles
  • Weston-super-Mare – 19 miles

Note.

  1. Return trips to Bristol Parkway and Western-super-Mare would be possible.
  2. The other destinations will need charging facilities.

Bristol Temple Meads station could become a major hub for battery trains.

All local services and all passing longer distance services could be trains with a battery capability.

Chippenham

A train would leave Chippenham station with a full battery after charging on the fully-electrified route from London.

Chippenham and Weston-super-Mare would be in battery range with a charging facility at Weston-super-Mare station.

It should be noted that every extra mile of electrification past Chippenham, can be added to the distance electric trains with a battery capability can reach.

Westbury

Charging facilities would be needed.

Destinations in battery range would include.

  • Salisbury – 24 miles.
  • Southampton – 49 miles to the electrified South Western Main Line, at Southampton Central station.
  • Weymouth – 53 miles to the electrified South Western Main Line at Dorchester Junction.

Note.

  1. A return trip to Salisbury would be possible.
  2. Trains would need to have the capability to access 750 VDC third-rail electrification.
  3. A few extra miles of electrification may make operation South from Westbury station easier, more reliable and allow more destinations to be included.

Westbury station could be a major hub for battery trains.

This Google Map shows Westbury station and the lines around it.

I would probably electrify a few miles either side of Westbury, so that passing trains could be in contact with the overhead wires for perhaps five to ten minutes and take a good long drink.

  • Electrification could be either 25 KVAC overhead or 750 VDC overhead.
  • Newbury, where the electrification to London starts is 42 miles away and trains can pick it up at speed.
  • Taunton is 47 miles away and could be electrified to Exeter St. Davids.

Great Western Railway could run all their services between London Paddington and the South-West using Class 800 trains with a battery capability.

Conclusion

The prolitical, heritage and engineering problems of electrifying through Bath Spa station can be voided, by electrification and charging facilities at stations like Bristol Temple Meads, Taunton, Westbury and Weston-super-Mare.

Beeching Reversal – St Anne’s Park Station

This is one of the Beeching Reversal projects that the Government and Network Rail are proposing to reverse some of the Beeching cuts.

This Google Map shows the proposed site of St. Anne’s Park station, between British Temple Meads and Keynsham stations.

The station is about four-five miles from Bristol Temple Meads station.

  • Bristol Temple Meads station is to the West of the map.
  • St. Anne’s Park station will be to the East of the map.
  • The station has up to two stations per hour.

The Great Western Main Line between Bristol Temple Meads and Bath runs through the site of St. Anne’s station.

Conclusion

There are quite a few stations like this that councils want to reopen.
