The New Little Waitrose at Highbury and Islington
It opened yesterday and I was impressed.
The only thing I couldn’t find of my staple purchases was the Waitrose goat’s milk. But surprisingly they had the Genius bread and the Genius fruit bread, which is rather difficult to get elsewhere. There was also gluten-free biscuits and cakes.
It will be a great help for me, as often I come out of Highbury and Islington station after coming home on the Victoria line. So at least I won’t starve.
I was impressed, and the average coeliac could do a lot worse round here. If anybody is going to the Olympics on the London Overground, it will be a good place to pick up a picnic. You could even go round the corner and eat it in Highbury Fields, which is rather a smart little park.
Welsh Policemen On The Streets of London
I took this picture this morning at the Angel
It shows two Carmarthen policemen on duty.
In some ways, it’s an appropriate area, as the statue of Hugh Myddelton, the Welshman, who four hundred years ago, built the New River to give London its first fresh water is at Islington Green, a hundred metres or so away.
Are Carluccio’s Putting In Extra Seats For The Torch Relay?
Carluccio’s in Upper Street in Islington is covered in scaffolding, as this picture shows.
As the Olympic Torch Relay passes their restaurant on the 26th of July at around 08:20, are they putting in extra seats to take advantage of the expected crowds?
A Good Idea For A Restaurant
This window display took my eye in Upper Street today.
Especially as the restaurant is closed on Monday.
I shall try it for lunch one Sunday. Especially, as it looks like they can do gluten-free.
Amazing 2D
Well! That’s what it says!
Anyway with my eyes, I don’t think 3D would work. It’s just an expensive gimmick.
A Sandwich Board in Islington
This guy was selling pensions in Islington yesterday.
I admire his methods, but I wouldn’t be sure about his products.
But saying that, trying to sell pensions to most people is very difficult.
Where Are The New Buses for London?
They have been rather conspicuous by their absence of late and I whave been wondering they are either being retrofitted with some new mod or have been busjacked for the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Perhaps, HRH is turning up on a 38 bus, as after all it goes round the back of Buck House.
Today though, I saw LT2 and LT6 at the Angel, so it must just be the reverse of coincidence, that I haven’t seen one for a few days.
I’m Getting Paranoid About Waitrose
Coeliacs are very particular about what they eat.
My list of must-have foods apart from the usual things, like meat, fish, vegetables and fruit includes :-
- Waitrose seeded, thin-sliced loaf. It makes good toast and lovely sandwiches.
- Waitrose semi-skimmed goats milk. As good as any, and there is no smell.
- Eat Natural gluten-free toasted muesli with vine fruit.
- St.Helen’s Farm semi-skimmed goats milk yoghurt. I have this with my breakfast cereal.
- Rowse organic honey. Again, I have this with the breakfast cereal.
But my branch in Islington does its best to annoy me :-
- They haven’t had the thin-sliced loaf for weeks. But they always seem to have the thick-sliced, which has the texture of the stuff with which they make IKEA furniture. It is ideal for making sandwiches for masochists!
- Recently, there have been days, with the full-fat goats milk, but not the semi-skimmed.
- They haven’thad this for months, but they’ve always got lots of unsold packets of the buckwheat version. So it means, I have to go to Sainsbury’s next door.
- I make sure, I always have the yoghurt in the fridge, as sometimes this isn’t for sale.
- The same applies to the honey.
And then of course there’s the check-outs, which were designed by a man or woman with two perfect hands.
It is any wonder, that I’m getting paranoid?
I suppose this afternoon, I had better go all the way to Eastfield to get a loaf.
A Thought of Angel on Google
This was the Thought of Angel yesterday.
No-one was seeming to mind, that it was a bit sexist. Or are wives and their mothers still fair game.
The Perils of Alcohol
The Old Queen’s Head in the Essex Road, often chalks up a humorous message.
This was yesterday’s philosophy.
