Ukraine Crisis: Fifa And Uefa Suspend All Russian Clubs And National Teams
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.
This first paragraph says it all.
Russian football clubs and national teams have been suspended from all competitions by Fifa and Uefa after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
It looks like it is a complete ban from both Fifa and Uefa.
Vlad the Invader/Mad/Poisoner (Delete as appropriate!), is reportedly not amused.
My father, who had something to do with the League of Nations, felt that we didn’t act soon enough over Hitler and Stalin and I could argue we should have acted with tough sanctions after Putin annexed Crimea in 2014.
Is This Weapon Helping The Ukranians?
In The Times today, there is an article, which gives a list of what weapons have been supplied to the Ukrainians.
Included are.
- Javelins from the US and Estonia
- Stingers from Germany and the Netherlands
- Panzerfaust 3 from the Netherlands.
But there is no mention of the MBT LAW. This is the introduction to the Wikipedia entry for the weapon.
The Main Battle Tank and Light Anti-tank Weapon (MBT LAW), also known as the NLAW, is a joint British and Swedish short-range fire-and-forget anti-tank missile system. Designed for use by infantry, the MBT LAW is shoulder fired and disposable, firing once before being disposed of. It is currently in use with the military forces of the United Kingdom, Finland, Luxembourg, Ukraine, and Sweden, among others.
There is a lot of interesting information in the Wikipedia entry.
- It is fired once and the launcher is thrown away.
- It has a soft-launch, which allows it to be fired from an enclosed space.
- It is designed to be fired at moving targets.
I also think, that it could be a weapon, where a dummy version could be built that would be a superb training simulator.
- The trainee would sit on the range with his dummy weapon and go through the process of identifying a target and pulling the trigger.
- The dummy could even simulate the forces of launching a real missile.
- The simulator would calculate the trajectory of the missile and tell the trainee and his instructor, if they had hit the target.
The missile would not be fired and there would be no damage to the target.
This is said about deliveries to Ukraine.
At least 2,000 NLAW units are known to be supplied to Ukraine by the United Kingdom by 19 January 2022 and more shipments, including by other supporters, can be assumed amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Times says this about the training of Ukrainian forces and British Army tactics.
Since 2015 about 22,000 Ukrainian troops have been trained by the British Army as part of Operation Orbital.
Price said anti-armour ambushes of the sort deployed by Ukrainian forces were pretty much the bread and butter of the British infantry, adding: “If you have a classic column of 10 to 20 tanks and you’ve got a wide field of fire then you can knock two or three of them out and then the rest are sitting ducks and they can’t reverse out. Then you finish them off,” he said.
Note that Price is Kevin Price a former British Army major.
It sounds like a few well-trained soldiers sitting in a protected bunker armed with this missile could play havoc with a tank formation.
Russian Grand Prix Cancelled Following Invasion Of Ukraine
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.
Formula One has done the right thing!
How will Putin get his own back on Formula One?
He could ban Formula One for ever from Russia, but then somewhere else like Ukraine, Poland or one of the Baltic States would happily stage a Grand Prix.
Where Are The Warthogs?
It must have been over twenty years ago, when I ended up in the Clopton Crown public house, spending an evening’s drinking with two USAF pilots, who lived locally.
They flew A10 Thunderbolt IIs out of RAF Bentwaters.
These aircraft are effectively a flying-gun, which are affectionately known as Warthogs, were designed with one purpose in mind and that was to stop Russian tanks marching through Europe.
When I told the pilots, that I had several hundred hours flying light aircraft. they told me, how easy the Warthogs were to fly.
Perhaps the Americans should have brought a few out of store and given them to the Ukrainians with a training package?
Tony Radakin And Ben Wallace In Russia
The Times today has published a picture with this caption.
Ben Wallace, the defence secretary, his counterpart, Sergei Shoigu, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, chief of the defence staff, and Valery Gerasimov, chief of general staff
Ever since, Tony Radakin was made Chief of the Defence Staff, I’ve been curious about his name.
So tonight, I typed “radakin surname” into Google and got this answer.
Radakin (Russian: Радакин) is carried by more people in Russia than any other country or territory. It can also be rendered as a variant
Interesting! But surely, something that will enable the three military men and the former Scots guardsman to get on a bit better!
Construction Of Europe’s Largest Rail Intermodal Terminal Starts On Hungary-Ukraine Border
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on MENAFN.
This is the introductory paragraph.
The construction of Europe’s largest railway intermodal combi terminal East-West Gate (EWG) has begun near the Hungarian-Ukrainian border.
This paragraph sums up the benefits of the new terminal.
‘Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the EWG intermodal terminal, as the western gateway to the New Silk Road, offers a faster alternative route to Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Germany for freight traffic from Asia than the current land and maritime routes, reads the article.
It is planned to be completed in 2022.
Vlad The Poisoner won’t like it!
Trump And Flight PS572
What puzzles me about all this is Trump’s reaction.
If he were true to his past persona, he would be very much angrier and vowing vengeance, but his reaction seems almost calm and very measured.
Perhaps, he knows for certain, that it was a tragic accident, that happened to Flight PS572. After all the UK, US, Canada and Ukraine seem to be saying similar things.
Someone or something, seems to have got Trump to see sense!
Melania, Justin, Boris, Emmanuel, Dominic or Angela? Or was it the Italian guy, who does his hair?
Between Bratislava And Kiev By Train
This article on Railway Gazette is entitled Slovakia – Ukraine passenger service to launch in June.
This is the first three paragraphs.
Slovakian national operator ZSSK and its Ukrainian counterpart UZ have agreed to launch a through passenger service on June 9 on the 146 km route between Košice and Mukachevo via the Čierna nad Tisou/Chop border crossing.
This follows a trial train which ran on April 2. Services are expected to leave Košice at 09.10 and 12.01 and Mukachevo at 13.54 and 17.20, with a journey time of around 4 h including the border formalities.
There will be connections at Košice with trains to and from Žilina, Bratislava and the Czech Republic, and at Mukachevo with trains to Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa.
This new train, will open up a new route between Bratislave and Kiev.
- Košice is a large city, that has been European City of Culture.
- Mukachevo looks to be a place to while away a day and according to hotels.com, there are well-rated rooms in the town.
- I should think some knowledge of Hungarian or Ukrainian would help.
I would do the trip by flying to Kiev and after visiting Chernobyl, I would come home by train via this new route to Bratislava.
I’ve already done Bratislava to London by train, as part of my Home Run From Budapest in 2013.
You can find all the posts in Flying To Budapest And Getting The Train Back.
If anybody wants to visit Chernobyl with me and come back from the Ukraine by train, hopefully, I shall be doing this trip sometime in the summer.
Is Now The Time To Visit Chernobyl?
Chernobyl isn’t that dangerous a place to visit, unless you go very close. Especially, if you go on a properly organised tour.
Today, the BBC web site has a report on the construction of the steel umbrella to go over the reactor.
I’ve looked up tours to Chernobyl and it would appear they run daily from Kiev according to this web page.
So an ideal itinerary would be to fly to Odessa to see the Potemkin Steps and the Black Sea coast.
Then it would be a train to Kiev and after Kiev and Chernobyl, it would be a series of trains home, by way of Warsaw and Berlin.
If anybody fancies the trip, just put a comment here.
Only those with a serious love of travel, trains and engineering need apply. Being slightly off your trolley might be a good idea too!
