Study Suggests Solar Energy Can Be Cleanly’ Converted Into Storable Hydrogen Fuel

The title of this post, is the same as that, as this news item from Strathclyde University.

This section entitled Green Hydrogen, describes the research.

Most hydrogen is still made from natural gas, producing greenhouse gasses, and green hydrogen production is urgently needed. Green hydrogen is produced from water using a photocatalyst – a material which drives the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight.

The study, ‘Photocatalytic overall water splitting under visible light enabled by a particulate conjugated polymer loaded with iridium’ is published in Angewandte Chemie, a journal of the German Chemical Society. It suggests that using a photocatalyst under simulated sun light facilitates the decomposition of water when loaded with an appropriate metal catalyst – in this case iridium.

When used in a fuel cell, hydrogen does not emit any greenhouse gasses at the point of use and can help decarbonise sectors such as shipping and transportation, where it can be used as a fuel, as well as in manufacturing industries.

Using this photocatalyst may not be the final solution, but I do believe from my mathematical modelling of catalysts in an unrelated application in the 1970s, that this research could lead to an affordable way to create green hydrogen.

Siemens Mobility and Deutsche Bahn Present New Hydrogen Train

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Global Railway Review.

This is the sub-title.

Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility have presented the newly developed Mireo Plus H and a newly designed mobile hydrogen storage trailer.

It seems that Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility have put together a well-thought out plan to use hydrogen on a lot of unelectrified lines.

The Germans have given the project, the catchy name of H2goesRail.

How does that translate into German?

Is This One Of The Most Useful Lifts In London?

This lift at King’s Cross station must be one of the most useful lifts in London’s extensive public transport system.

At the top-level it comes out into King’s Cross Square and it is a level walk to the following.

  • All the platforms in King’s Cross National Rail station.
  • The shops, which include Leon, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and W H Smith, in King’s Cross National Rail station.
  • The taxi rank.
  • The Eastbound buses, which line up at their stops along the side of King’s Cross Square.

I was using it yesterday, to get a bus to Boots at the Angel, as I had a prescription to pick up. The 30 or 73 bus is quicker than the Northern Line, as that is a long walk and a road crossing at the Angel.

I’d arrived at King’s Cross on the Circle Line from Paddington and the bottom level of this lift is by the ticket gates under King’s Cross Square, that give access to all lines through King’s Cross Underground station.

There is also a middle level on the lift, that takes you under Euston Road to get a Westbound bus or gives you access to a step-free route to St. Pancras station.

A Gluten-Free Sandwich In Costa

Costa announced a couple of months ago, that they would be selling M & S Food.

Even so, I was still surprised to find this gluten-free sandwich in Costa at Paddington station.

I actually prefer their egg sandwiches, as for some reason egg sandwich fillings seem to go well with gluten-free bread.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root Prepares For The Hydrogen Transport Revolution

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Hydrogen Fuel News.

This is the first two paragraphs.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root today announces a strategic mission to become a pioneer in enabling future hydrogen-powered transportation.

It is making available a suite of compression, dispensing and software solutions, allowing the creation of a network of renewable or low-carbon hydrogen refuelling stations around the world.

Two statements from the article.

  • According to most industry experts, hydrogen is better suited for heavy-duty commercial vehicles than pure electric power, due to the rapid refuelling time, their weight, and duty cycles.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell trucks and buses are currently being developed by most of the leading global truck manufacturers and it’s predicted that 15% of commercial fleets will be hydrogen powered by 2030.

It looks like Gilbarco Veeder-Root have decided to join the hydrogen party.

I find this significant, as having a good hydrogen refuelling network, that operators know they can trust, will surely encourage them to decarbonise, by changing to hydrogen fuel.

Are Finally Battery-Electric Trains Going To Enter Service?

In the April 2022 Edition of Modern Railways, there are three articles about battery-electric trains on four different routes.

The technology has been a long-term arriving, as I had my first ride in a battery-electric train in February 2015, which I wrote about in Is The Battery Electric Multiple Unit (BEMU) A Big Innovation In Train Design?.

Is This A Plan For The Marshlink Line?

Uckfield Third Rail Is NR Priority is based on an article in the April 2022 Edition of Modern Railways, with the same name.

The Modern Railways article also has this to say about the Marshlink Line.

By contrast, the shorter trains in use on the Marshlink Line between Ashford and Hastings made bi-modes with batteries a realistic option there.

The Marshlink Line is electrified at both ends at Ashford International and Ore stations.

  • In between there are four small stations and one large one Rye in the middle.
  • Ashford and Rye are 15.3 miles apart.
  • Rye and Ore are 10.1 miles apart.
  • As it runs across the Romney Marsh, there probably aren’t too many gradients.

It would appear that with a fast charge system at Rye, battery-electric operation should be possible.

In an article in the October 2017 Edition of Modern Railways, which is entitled Celling England By The Pound, Ian Walmsley says this in relation to trains running on the Uckfield Branch, which is not very challenging.

A modern EMU needs between 3 and 5 kWh per vehicle mile for this sort of service.

For different lengths of trains, battery sizes can be calculated based on a distance of sixteen miles.

  • A five-car train would need a battery capacity of between 240 and 400 kWh.
  • A four-car train would need a battery capacity of between 192 and 320 kWh.
  • A three-car train would need a battery capacity of between 144 and 240 kWh.

In Uckfield Third Rail Is NR Priority, I estimated that the Uckfield branch could be served using five-car trains with batteries between 180 and 300 kWh.

It does look that a five-car battery-electric train could be developed that would handle both the Uckfield Branch and the Marshlink Line.

The Vivarail Fast Charge System At West Ealing – 4th May 2022

This article on Rail Business UK is entitled UK Railway News Round-Up.

This is the first section.

Vivarail has awarded Sella Controls a contract to supply of Tracklink III Readers and beacons for GWR’s Class 230 battery train fast charging trial on the Greenford branch. As the train enters the station one beacon will initiate the deployment of the train collectors for charging, and another beacon will trigger the charging process when the train is in the correct position.

I went to West Ealing station today and took these pictures.

Note.

  1. The bay platform is Platform 5.
  2. I couldn’t see any signs of any Tracklink III Readers.
  3. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that two Class 230 trains could fit in Platform 5.

I took these pictures of the station in April 2021.

It does appear by comparing the pictures, that the biggest change is that the area on the far side of the track in Platform 5, which has been cleared.

Vote Hydrogen For London

London has an air pollution problem, as do many cities around the UK and the world.

This web page from Imperial College is entitled Air Pollution Research in London.

It starts like this.

Why Do Research In London?

  • Air pollution is a very large public health issue in London. It shortens the lives of Londoner’s leading to up to 9,400 extra deaths per year.
  • We still do not fully understand the health effects of air pollution.
  • London is a good place to do air pollution research, and acts as a giant laboratory.
  • Air pollution is well recorded in London, starting in 1993 and now covering about 200 sites.
  • London has a large population and good data on health, movement and population.

Surely, 9,400 extra deaths per year are 9,400 extra deaths too many!

These pictures were taken close to where I live in Hackney, mainly on the Bals Pond Road and Moorgate.

All show heavy diesel trucks, spewing out large amounts of carbon dioxide and other emissions.

So how can we reduce the pollution from these heavy trucks?

Consider.

  • I doubt that despite what Elon Musk says, these six- and eight-wheeled trucks can’t be powered by batteries.
  • Nearly all of these trucks, never go far from London.
  • Many of these trucks could be converted to hydrogen and thus become zero-carbon.
  • When they are replaced, these trucks should be replaced by zero-carbon hydrogen trucks.

But there is one big problem. Unlike Aberdeen, Birmingham, Glasgow and a few other areas, London has no hydrogen infrastructure and the Mayor has no plans to develop one.

I will not vote for any politician, who doesn’t support developing a hydrogen infrastructure and a hydrogen policy for London.

Eridge Station – 3rd May 2022

I documented the work at Eridge station in Eridge Station – 12th July 2021 and it was finished a few days ago.

Note.

  1. The platforms can take ten-car trains.
  2. The lift on the National Rail side of the station.
  3. The restored iron supports for the roof.
  4. The two waiting rooms; one by the ticket hall and the other on the platform.
  5. The well-appointed toilets, with quirky signs and the all important coat hook.
  6. There’s even an Amazon Hub.

It certainly is a quality restoration and upgrading to step-free access.

Possible Future Electrification

In Uckfield Third Rail Is NR Priority, I discussed ways that the Uckfield Branch could be electrified.

This picture shows the platforms from the Spa Heritage Railway.

Note.

  1. All National Rail services call in the far platform.
  2. The platform will take a ten-car train.
  3. There is plenty of space for a single extra third-rail between the tracks.

If the power were only switched on whilst trains were in the platform, surely it would be safe.
