Why Was This Idiot Allowed To Drive?

When I had my stroke, I was not allowed to drive until I’d proved I was safe. As my eyesight never returned to 20/20, I decided that it was probably best to give up trying to drive again. I suspect now, that I might be able to drive without any problems, but I couldn’t live with perhaps knocking someone over, even if it was impossible for it to have been my fault.

On the other hand, the idiot driver of the van shown in this report from the BBC, was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, who went on to kill a young mother and injure thirteen others.  In other words he was a worse killer than the two who are accused of murdering Lee Rigby.

What doctor allowed him to drive after the diagnosis? He should be struck off at the least.

A Case That Stinks From Florida

This case reported in the Miami Herald is rather bizarre.  And as one of the lawyers involved says, it stinks. Here’s the first three paragraphs.

Ten years ago, killer Robert Burkell bludgeoned to death his 81-year-old tenant Charles Bertheas, cracking open his skull like an eggshell, according to police. The motive: money.

Today, Burkell is in prison for life. But his wife Susan, a Lauderhill resident who authorities say did not participate in the slaying but knew what was happening, is set to inherit more than $214,000 of the victim’s money.

Bertheas’ eight elderly brothers and sisters, who live in France, won’t see a dime: Charles Bertheas designated the Burkells as co-beneficiaries on his accounts at the Bank of America.

Let’s hope that it sees a sensible change in the law and that a similar set of circumstances doesn’t happen here.

Woolwich Attack Incredibly Hard To Stop

This was the headline on this story on the BBC.

It’s so true.

I once met a senior police officer, who told me that a lot of knife crimes in his experience happened, after someone had a row and lost it.  They might run into the kitchen at home and grab the first thing that was handy, such as a knife from a block in the kitchen, which we all seem to have these days. As he said, his mother only had one small knife on display, which she used for everything, with the carver for the Sunday joint safe in a drawer. My mother was the same.

It’s just too easy to get hold of a lethal weapon.

Obviously, this wouldn’t have been a factor in the Woolwich killing, but it is too easy to get hold of dangerous weapons as so many cases show.

Mark Steel On The US Gun Lobby

I found this thoughtful article by Mark Steel in the Independent.

His logic may be faultless, but he comes to a series of hilarious conclusions. This paragraph is typical.

Or it could be that there’s a rule that the capture of a dangerous criminal is only a victory for America if the criminal can be portrayed as not American. Because if you’re going to go on a killing spree in America, you should at least have the decency to be American. There must be some people saying: “It’s a disgrace. These Chechen lunatics are coming over here taking our lunatics’ jobs.”

On the other hand most people, who’ve read what he says agree with him.

Murder At Minchenden

My old school; Minchenden Grammar School in Southgate was a fairly peaceful place most of the time, but last night just down from the school, a murder was committed, as is reported here. When I went to see the Olympic Torch in Southgate, we walked through the area.

They Do Things Big In Las Vegas

This story from Las Vegas shows one of the reasons why I will never go to that dump again. It really is a supremely tacky place, especially if you see it as it gets up in the morning, with the lights off.

I suppose a holiday in Syria might be a bit quieter.

The Oscar Pistorius And Vicky Pryce Cases

These two cases going through the Courts in South Africa and London, are in my mind not news and it is wrong they lead the BBC News.

The first is a tragedy for everyone involved and the second is a bit of political tittle-tattle that is all about the breakdown of a marriage, which went a lot more than wrong.

Why is the BBC wasting my licence fee on these sort of stories?  The cases should be left to the tabloids.

The third story, the rise in the number of employed in the UK,should have led the News.  Jobs are much more important than gossip.

What’s Wrong With Snooker?

The news from Pakistan just seems to get worse.

The latest was this bombing of a snooker hall in Quetta.

I doubt that any religion or sect could be against such an innocent game of snooker and it looks like Sunni Muslims were attacking Shias.

I just can’t understand anybody wanting to kill anybody, except in exceptional circumstances!

A Tale Of Two Young Women

Today we had the good news of Malala Yousafzai leaving hospital after being shot by the Taleban in Pakistan  for speaking up for the education of girls.

But the student, who was raped and murdered in India hasn’t been as lucky. The latest news is here on the BBC.

What is it in the sub-continent about their attitude to women and girls?

But saying that, there is a surprisingly large number of Asian men in jail in the UK for sex offences.

An Abuse Alert System For Hospitals

This system, which is reported on today is to be welcomed.

But why is it just to flag up child abuse?

I remember a notorious case in North Essex in the 1980s, where the wife was always being beaten up by her husband. He used to take her to different A & E units, to minimise the chance of the truth being discovered.

In the end, she was found murdered.
