Exploring Bilbao
Bilbao is an easy city to walk around, although there are virtually no maps, except rudimentary ones at Metro stations.
As you can see the weather was good and I found it helped my health, as it was mild and humid.
Bilbao also seemed to have a lot of clocks, most of which were working and showing the correct time. As Liverpool is the same, is this due to the connection with the sea?
Attention To Detail At The Guggenheim Museum
This picture shows a handrail around a part of the building, where I suspect a few might have bumped their heads.

Attention To Detail At The Guggenheim Museum
The building might be good from an architectural point of view, but I suspect many visitors will complain about some of the walking around the building, with lots of long staircases.
A Fabulous Building! Shame About The Art!
These pictures show the quality of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Unfortunately, it had a collection of the most indulgent and useless art I’ve ever seen.
Except of course for the marvellous Puppy. But you don’t need to go in to see that.
That was the only art with any colour, except grey and brown.
One whole floor was given over to enormous curved steel structures. They would have been so much better in a public space, rather than hidden in a museum.
But the worst piece, was a slide carousel showing continuous images on the wall. All of the slides were blank. If that’s art, I’m a Chinaman!
I would advise visiting the museum on a fine, sunny Monday, as I did.As then, the museum is closed and you can just enjoy the building, the Puppy and their setting.
Grooming The Puppy
Puppy is an artwork by Jeff Koons outside the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
As it was Monday and the museum was closed, the puppy was being spruced up a bit.
My Hotel In Bilbao
I stayed at the Silken Gran Dominie hotel in Bilbao.
The hotel was comfortable and although it was a five-star one, I got each night of my say at €102.30.
The food and service were good and I ate in the hotel for most of the two days, as they knew their gluten-free and I wasn’t too sure about other places in the city.
But various little things were not what you would expect from a good hotel.
The wi-fi was free, but the passwords were so complicated, I never managed to get connected. My username was all numbers and letters with a password of kKf6vaW6. Ty typing those in on the small screen of a Samsung S3 Mini. But at least they provided a free desktop machine in the Business Centre.
There was no bathrobes, tea or coffee equipment or free water in the room, which I expect in a five star hotel.
There were also a few small details that annoyed. One was that you could only empty the bath from inside it, as you couldn’t reach the control for the plug. Note the picture of the bath! It’s full of water, which I couldn’t release once I had got dressed.
On the other hand the house wine cost just two euros a glass in the hotel’s cafe. And it was good too!
I’d definitely stay again, but I would expect the same cost!
One Down To BT Sport
A friend, who has Sky, missed his team; Sheffield United. win the FA Cup today, as the match was on BT Sport.
All of these channels must get their act together, so we can all watch our favourite sport.
It would be nice if all matches were available through the Internet on a dedicated UK Football portal. But that would probably be illegal under EU Law.
But then what does the EU know about football and technology?
England Against Italy In Manaus
Years ago, as a child, I read stories of Manaus; one of the most fascinating places on earth and have always secretly wanted to go.
Now that England are going to face Italy in their first match at the 2014 World Cup, I must say that I’m more than tempted to go, especially if the trip can be paired with a wildlife tour on the Amazon.
A Second Lazy Fish Pie
I said in this post, where I cooked Lindsey Bareham’s Emmental and Spinach Fish Pie, that I msde two and put one in the freezer. I cooked it for supper tonight.

A Second Lazy Fish Pie
It froze and cooked well and tasted no different to the first one. It really is a truly lazy fish pie, as Lindsey says.
This is very lazy fish pie. No sauce, just grated Emmental, a fillet of fish per person, spinach, mashed potato and more cheese. The mash is enriched with beaten egg so it holds its shape and crisps as it bakes. For more or less servings adjust the ingredients in proportion.
I shall be cooking this one again. They are probably best cooked in pairs, as fish seem to be packaged that way in supermarkets, so with me, it’s one for now an d one for the freezer. I will probably cook haddock one week and salmon or cod the next.
I can’t cook more than two at a time, as my mixing bowl isn’t big enough to cook more spinach than is needed to two pies.
