From Doncaster To Cleethorpes

These pictures were taken on my journey between Doncaster and Cleethorpes.

The area is best summed up as flat and decorated with these features.

  • A few hedges.
  • Some trees and some woodland.
  • dozens of wind turbines.
  • Lots of pylons carrying electricity.
  • Scunthorpe steelworks
  • A few stations and railway sidings.
  • A couple of waterways.
  • Estates of new housing as you approach Grimsby.

When I returned there was more of the same on the other side of the tracks.

With the addition of all the power stations at Keadby and a couple of wind farms.

These are my thoughts on how this landscape will look at some time after 2030.

More Onshore Wind Farms

There will be a lot more wind farms lining the Doncaster and Cleethorpes railway.

The government has said it might pay for turbines and transmission lines to spoil views.

I feel they will have to, to meet their net-zero targets.

There Will Be Massive Hydrogen Storage On The Other Side Of The Humber

SSE are developing Albrough and Centrica are developing Rough into two of the largest hydrogen stores in the world.

The wind farms of the North Sea will provide them with hydrogen.

More Housing

If the government has its wish there will be a lot more new housing.

And as the newer houses show in my pictures, many of them will have solar panels.

More Power Stations At Keadby

Consider.

  • The main purpose of the power stations at Keadby will be to provide backup to the wind and solar power in the area and far out to sea.
  • The power stations will use hydrogen stored at Albrough and Rough.
  • Some of the gas-fired power stations at Keadby will be fitted with carbon capture.
  • One hydrogen-fired power station is already being planned.

The power stations at Keadby will probably be capable of supplying several GW of zero-carbon energy.

There Will Be Energy-Hungry Industries Along The South Bank Of The Humber

Just as in the Victorian era, coal attracted steel-making, chemicals and refining to the area, a South Humberside with large amounts of energy will attract heavy industry again.

Already, Siemens have built a train factory at Goole.

There Will Also Be Large Greenhouses In Lincolnshire

Greenhouses are a wonderful green way of absorbing waste heat and carbon dioxide.

Where Have I Seen This Blend Of Offshore Energy, Hydrogen, Heavy Industry And Agriculture Before?

After I visited Eemshaven in the Northern Netherlands, I wrote The Dutch Plan For Hydrogen.

We are not doing something similar, but something much bigger, based on the hydrogen stores at Aldbrough and Brough, the massive offshore wind farms and Lincolnshire’s traditional heavy industry and agriculture.

The Railway Between Doncaster and Cleethorpes Will Be Developed

Just as the Dutch have developed the railways between Groningen and Eemshaven.

RWE Gets Go-Ahead For 100 MW Electrolyzer For Offshore Wind-to-Hydrogen Project

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

German energy company RWE has secured construction and environmental permits to build a 100 MW electrolyzer in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The electrolyzer is part of system integration solutions associated with OranjeWind, an offshore wind project RWE is jointly developing with TotalEnergies in the Dutch North Sea.

These first threee paragraphs gove more information.

RWE described the permits as an important step in developing 100 MW of green hydrogen production at Eemshaven which, if built, will contribute to the onshore energy system integration plans associated with the 795 MW OranjeWind offshore wind project.

To remind, in July this year, TotalEnergies entered into an agreement with RWE to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the OranjeWind and said it would use its share of the electricity from the offshore wind project to power 350 MW electrolyzer projects that will produce about 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

With the necessary permits in place, RWE stated it will be able to develop a 100 MW electrolyzer on a plot adjacent to the Magnum Power Station in Eemshaven.

I went to Eemshaven in The Train Station At The Northern End Of The Netherlands. The area looks like it will be the centre of the Dutch hydrogen industry.

RWE To Start Building Battery Storage That Will Support Dutch Offshore Wind Farm

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

RWE has finalised its investment decision for a battery storage project in the Netherlands that will optimise the OranjeWind offshore wind farm’s integration into the Dutch energy system. The company plans to invest approximately EUR 24 million into the project.

This paragraph outlines the system.

The system, which will have an installed power capacity of 35 MW and a storage capacity of 41 MWh, will consist of a total of 110 lithium-ion battery racks that will be installed at RWE’s biomass plant in Eemshaven and will be virtually coupled with RWE’s power plants in the Netherlands.

Note.

I visited Eemshaven in The Train Station At The Northern End Of The Netherlands.

  • The wind farm has a capacity of 760 MW.
  • Solar panels will float between the wind turbines.
  • Surplus energy will be turned into hydrogen.

The OranjeWind wind farm has a web site, with a video that explains RWE’s philosophy.

The web site has a section, which is entitled Innovations At OranjeWind, where this is said.

In order to realise system integration and accelerate the energy transition, RWE is working together with a number of innovators on new developments in offshore wind farms. The company is realising and testing these innovations in the OranjeWind wind farm.

These innovations include offshore floating solar, a subsea lithium-ion battery, LiDAR power forecasting system and a subsea hydro storage power plant off-site.

N-Sea To Connect German Offshore Wind Farm To Dutch Gas Platform

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

Dutch upstream oil and gas company, ONE-Dyas, has awarded N-Sea with a contract to install a subsea power cable between the Riffgat offshore wind farm in the German North Sea and the new, to-be-built N05-A gas production platform.

At a first look it appears that wind power is being used to power the gas production platform.

Other points from the article include.

  • The distance of the connecting cable is ten kilometres.
  • The Dutch government approved the scheme in June 2022.
  • A final investment decision was made in September 2022.

I have some thoughts and further information.

Borkum, Rottumerplaat and Schiermonnikoog

The article says this about the position of the gas platform.

The N05-A platform will be installed some 20 kilometres north of the islands of Borkum, Rottumerplaat and Schiermonnikoog, and approximately one and a half kilometres from German waters.

This Google Map shows the three islands.

Note.

  1. Borkum is the horseshoe-shaped German island in the North-East corner of the map.
  2. Schiermonnikoog is the long and thin island in the West.
  3. Rottumerplaat is the larger of the two Dutch islands in middle map.
  4. Eemhaven, which I wrote about in The Train Station At The Northern End Of The Netherlands, is in the South-East corner of the map.

Shipping routes run up the River Ems and German-Dutch border in the East of the map

Riffgat Wind Farm

This web page on the EWE web site, gives this description of the wind farm.

EWE has built the first commercial wind farm in the German North Sea in summer 2013 with Riffgat. The modern wind farm has a total capacity of 108 megawatts of power and can supply around 120,000 households with environmentally friendly electricity. In just 14 months of construction, the 30 wind turbines of the 3.6 megawatt class have been installed 15 kilometers off the north seas of Borkum. The rotor diameter of the units is 120 meters, while the hub height is 90 meters, which corresponds to the height of the Bremen dome. Overall, the plants are 150 meters high from the water surface to the top rotor blade tip. They are founded on 70 meter long steel foundations (monopiles), 40 meters deep in the sea bottom. The water depth in the wind farm is between 18 and 23 meters. In addition to the wind power plants, Riffgat also consists of a substation which transports the generated electricity to a better transportable voltage level.

It looks a pretty standard 100 MW wind farm with fixed foundations.

The N05-A Platform

The article says this about the N05-A project.

The N05-A project is part of the so-called GEMS area, an area approximately 20 to 80 kilometres north of the Ems estuary. ONE-Dyas, together with partners Hansa Hydrocarbons and EBN, aims to extract natural gas from the N05-A field as well as surrounding fields in the German and Dutch North Sea.

The GEMS area has a web site with a URL with a .co.uk extension.

It has an informative video, which I don’t think would go down with Dutch chapter of Just Stop Oil.

The North Sea’s First Gas Platform To Run Entirely On Wind Power

The article says this about the N05-A project.

While the N05-A platform will not be the first in the North Sea to run on wind energy, it will be the first to do so entirely.

Hywind Tampen floating wind farm will be the first.

Conclusion

This looks like a good pragmatic solution to me.

I can see more connections between offshore wind farms and oil and gas facilities all over the world.

The Train Station At The Northern End Of The Netherlands

Eemshaven station is the northernmost station in the Netherlands.

One of the reasons I went, was that the station is only a year old and I wanted to see how the Dutch build new stations.

Note this about the station.

  • It is very basic, with few facilities.
  • The single platform is very long.
  • The station is surrounded by oil and gas installations on one side and the sea on the other.

It appears that for a lot of the day, the station gets two trains per hour.

This Google Map shows the station by the beach.

I would assume that most of the cars are those of workers at the oil and gas complex.

I returned on the train, I had arrived on, after a few minutes taking the pictures.

The Stadler GTW Train

Shown in the pictures is one of the Stadler GTW trains,which work the services in the North of the Netherlands.

  • They are electric trains, with their own diesel power pack in the middle.
  • This train had three passenger cars, but some only have two.
  • Noise from the engine was noticeable and probably about the same in a Class 170 train.
  • Ride quality wasn’t bad, considering the unusual configuration. But then the track looked very neat and tidy.
  • Arriva call the trains Spurt.

Stadler have not stood still, since they built these trains and Greater Anglia’s new Class 755 trains are built by Stadler to similar principles.

At the turnround at Eemshaven with the driver. He indicated that there had been speculation about battery and hydrogen trains in the North of The Netherlands.

Level Crossing Accidents

An interesting aside is to look at the Wikipedia entry for Spurt.

Three of the trains have been involved in serious level crossing accidents.
