A Design Crime – Marks And Spencer’s New Paper Carrier Bag

Marks & Spencer is swapping plastic carrier bags for paper ones in all stores, in an expansion of a trial that began in 10 branches in January.
These two paragraphs give a few reasons.
It follows other High Street stores in swapping plastic bags to paper in a bid to cut plastics use.
Supermarkets Morrisons, Waitrose and Aldi all use paper bags for customers, though some stores offer plastic bags as an option.
But the proof of the bag is in the using.
This picture shows the new bag.
It’s main problem is unlike the plastic bags, it is a nightmare to fold.
I could also fold the plastic bags, so they went in the pocket of my Barbour jacket.
I have searched my house for some of the green plastic bags to use in the future.

Heat And The City
As I do on many Saturdays, I took the bus to Moorgate to have a late breakfast and do some food shopping in the Marks & Spencer department store.
To say it was hot would be an understatement and it must have been over thirty, so I retreated into an air-conditioned restaurant for my brunch, with my son and a friend.
I know that area well and although, I’m normally there on a weekday, I’ve never seen so much display of female flesh, with bare shoulders, cleavage and tummies everywhere. At least some were wearing white, which surely was prudent, but others were suffering in black and other darker colours.
After eating, I did my shopping.
I didn’t need much, but I did need some beer. As I’d miscalculated my consumption in the hot weather, it was a priority.
At home, I generally drink Adnams 0.5% alcohol Ghost Ship, which my body attests to be gluten-free. Normally, the store stocks it, but I couldn’t find any, so I asked an assistant, who was restocking the shelves. She said that they didn’t have any, but they did have the Adnams-brewed M & S own-brand, of which I’ve drunk dozens of bottles and my body also attests is gluten-free. So a couple of bottles, went into my shopping basket.
Interestingly, the assistant was rearranging shelves and it appeared, she was moving zero-alcohol bottles from the floor into the refrigerated end of a large display.
Could the heat be creating a high demand for customers needing to drink something to cool down? And many felt that zero-alcohol beer was acceptable in the heat of the City.
On Monday, I went back to take this picture of the display.
Note the Marks & Spencer own label brewed by Adnams in the middle!

The Day I Saw The Rolling Stones And Bo Diddley
With the release of their new album, I had to look up where I saw the Stones.
I was still at school and I knew I saw them at the Regal Edmonton cinema, which is now a Sainsburys supermarket.
The Internet says they played there on the 2nd of October 1963, when they toured with Bo Diddley, who I also remember seeing at the same venue.
This Wikipedia entry is entitled The Rolling Stones British Tour 1963, also states that the Everly Brothers were on the bill.
It was nearly sixty years ago.
A year later, I saw a similar gig on the 20th of October at the same venue, with The Animals, Carl Perkins, The Nashville Teens, The Quotations, Tommy Tucker and Elkie Brooks. Who was Tommy Tucker?
Those were the days!
The Glimmer Twins
The Glimmer Twins is a bronze sculpture of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, that was unveiled this week in Dartford.
My only criticism is that the sculpture is not obvious from the station. But if you go over the bridge into the two centre and carry straight on, you should find it.
Beyoncé Funds Metro Service

Singer Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour funded an extra hour of operation of the Washington metro at a cost of $100 000, ensuring that fans could get home after bad weather delayed the start of her concert at the FedEx Field stadium.
Reading the whole article, it looks like everyone was a winner and it is to be hoped that it sets a precedent and under similar circumstances, other promoters take similar actions.
I remember a few years ago, Ipswich and Charlton in the League Cup overran badly one evening and we all got back to Ipswich station well after the last train had gone.
But Greater Anglia made sure that everybody got home, even sending a fleet of taxis to Sudbury.

These are my thoughts.
The Need For Zero-Carbon Construction Equipment
Construction sites can be dangerous places and in addition to the obvious dangers, there are hidden pollutants in the atmosphere on sites.
Health and Safety will surely demand an improvement in air quality on construction sites for the protection of the workforce and nearby residents.
If JCB can produce zero-carbon construction equipment, then whether it is electric or hydrogen, this will be to their advantage.
High Speed Two And Low-Carbon Construction
High Speed Two is the UK’s biggest construction project and these posts on this blog, talk about low-carbon construction.

If High Speed Two are thinking this way, how many other projects will be built in a similar way?
Decarbonising Cargo Handling
It should be noted that JCB are involved in Freeport East at Felixstowe/Harwich.
Ports will be the sort of workplaces, where all vehicles should be zero-carbon, to protect the workforce. Some of the container handling machines are large and would be ideal for hydrogen.
Decarbonising Agriculture
JCB also make tractors, like the Fastrac and other equipment for agriculture. As they often work around people, hydrogen could be much better.
New Markets
Zero-carbon engines will result in new products for new markets.
Lord Bamford is on track to create valuable new markets for his diggers and other equipment.
Hydrogen-Powered Land Speed Record
JCB already hold the land speed record with the JCB Dieselmax, at over 350 mph.

The car is powered by two specially-tuned versions of the production JCB444 powerplant, developing up to 750 brake horsepower (560 kW) each (over five times the power output of the production version with 90 psi (6 bar) of boost) and featuring four cylinders and 5 litres of displacement, accompanied by two stage turbochargers, intercooler and aftercooler.
I believe that getting that amount of power out of a production diesel engine, shows that JCB’s combustion engineers could do the same for a hydrogen-powered vehicle.
Air-Purifying Totems Trial At Birmingham New Street Station

The use of air-purifying totems to reduce the impact of diesel train exhaust fumes on air quality is to be tested at Birmingham New Street station.
The Pluvo Column devices take in air at the bottom of the totem and pass it through a series of filters before releasing it at head height.

What’s Gone Wrong With Taskrabbit?
I’ve used Taskrabbit several times in the past and as I have a few electrical problems, I thought I’d see if they could help me.
The major problem, I have is a broken smoke detector, that won’t stop bleeping. As it is in my bedroom, I’m not getting a good night’s sleep.
This would be the sort of problem, I’d have fixed myself in the past, but as it’s above my bed, I don’t think I trust my balance to fix it, after my stroke.
I could always borrow a shot-gun and fix it for ever.
My trouble with Taskrabbit is that it doesn’t recognise my address and says it is out of their coverage area.
I have sent a message to Taskrabbit and they say to ring a US number, if they haven’t got back to me in two days.
That limit expired four hours ago.
It’s the worst customer service I’ve found in years.
£20 Per Hour Is A 43 % Pay Increase Over £14 Per Hour
The BBC has just reported on the Junior Doctors Strike from outside University College Hospital.
- Banners were showing that their current pay rate is £14 per hour.
- In an interview, a strike leader said that junior doctors need an offer of £20 per hour.
That would be a pay increase of forty-three percent.
I’m sure we’d all like a pay or pension increase of that amount.
