Sutton Station To Gatwick Airport By Hydrogen-Powered Bus
In Central London and Gatwick Airport For Free On A Freedom Pass, I indicated it was possible to go to Gatwick Airport for nothing, if you had a Freedom Pass, which is also a free bus pass for England.
This morning I took public transport to Gatwick Airport by this route.
- I took a 43 bus to London Bridge station.
- This bus terminates in the bus station in front of the train station, so it was a simple step-free entry into the part of the station, where Southern Trains terminate.
- I took a Southern Train to Sutton station.
- I then took a Metrobus 420 bus from Sutton station to Gatwick Airport.
These pictures show the journey.
Note.
- The bus stop is directly outside the entrance to Sutton station.
- Sutton station is step-free.
- The information on the Metrobus’s buses at Sutton station is poor.
- The bus had a 74 number plate, so was registered after September 1st, 2024.
- The bus said it was a hydrogen bus.
- The seats were comfortable with leather facings.
- The route was mainly through rural Surrey.
- There were sections of dual-carriageway road with continuous 40 mph running.
- There were a number of steep hills.
- Previously, I have been told by a Bradford Councillor, that the City of Bradford is going for hydrogen-powered buses , as the city has lots of steep hills.
- The unusual Reigate and Redhill War Memorial on the A25.
- The route goes past Hadworth, Reigate and Redhill stations.
- Just before Gatwick Airport, the bus called at East Surrey Hospital.
I have some thoughts.
Does This Hydrogen Bus Have Almost The Quality Passengers Would Expect From A Coach?
Consider.
- I was very impressed with the quality of the bus and its fittings.
- But its biggest assets were the ride and mouse-quiet noise and being vibration-free.
- It was certainly up there, with the best British buses on UK roads.
- Strangely, I never rode in any of London’s Green Line coaches of the 1950s and 1960s.
But as Wrightbus are selling hydrogen-powered single-decker buses to the Germans, the quality must be of a certain standard.
The Performance Of The Bus
I would sum up the bus as follows.
- The bus didn’t hang around and it was well-driven.
- On much of the dual-carriageway, the bus appeared to be at the maximum speed limit of 40 mph
- Ride and seats were comfortable.
- There was virtually no vibration.
- At times, you almost felt you were in a top-of-the-range coach.
- The running gear is from German company ZF, which certainly doesn’t hinder the ride.
- The journey from Sutton to Gatwick Airport is twenty miles and took about ninety minutes.
I would feel that if Wrightbus design their CoachH2 chassis to the same standard of this bus, they’ll have a difficulty to meet sales demand.
Wrightbus Hydrogen Buses For My Local Bus Route 141
Consider.
- The 141 bus route is my local bus, which gets me to Moorgate, Bank, London Bridge and Manor House.
- The length of the full route is twenty miles and it takes about an hour to go from London Bridge station to Palmers Green.
- The route is currently run by older Wrightbus hybrid diesel-electric buses.
- I suspect that modern hydrogen buses could last almost all day on one fill of hydrogen, with perhaps a top-up at lunchtime.
They would have no difficulty handling the route and would greatly increase the customers current rock-bottom satisfaction.
Hydrogen Buses In Leafy Suburbs
- Where I live, is not particularly leafy or a suburb.
- But I seems to remember, when I moved here, that some of my neighbours complained about the noise of the 76 bus route.
- So Transport for London put on some quieter buses.
I would expect, that Metrobus might use the mouse quieter hydrogen buses in post areas, to avoid annoyance.
Hydrogen Buses As Route Extenders
Effectively, the Metrobus route 420 is acting as a route extender for Southern and Thameslink services coming South from London.
As it is a quality bus, that gets a move on, I suspect that some travellers, who previously took a train to Sutton, Tadworth, Reigate, Redhill or other stations and were then picked up, may take a hydrogen bus to a more convenient bus stop.
Because of the long range of a hydrogen bus or coach, zero-carbon performance, should be achieved without any range anxiety for passengers, driver or bus company.
Onward From Oakhampton Parkway Station
Consider.
- In 2014, storms destroyed the railway at Dawlish in Devon.
- As there was no alternative route, the storms cut everything west of Dawlish off from the rest of the UK.
- It is now likely, that a Park-and-Ride station will be built close to Okehanpton, which commuters would use for travel to Exeter.
- The main road to the South-West ; the A 30 will pass nearby.
It would appear, that Okehampton Interchange station could be used, if Nepture decided to show his power again.
Hopefully, the emergency plan will scare Nepture away.
Lumo To The Scottish Borders
Consider.
- Lumo have applied to extend some of their Edinburgh services to Glasgow.
- Talking to a friend in the Scottish Borders, they said, that travelers drive to Newcastle or Morpeth to catch Lumo for London.
- Four or five Lumo services every day stop in each direction at Morpeth station.
- So would it be sensible to run a bus or coach through the Scottish Borders to connect with the Lumo services?
This Google Map shows Morpeth in relation to the Border towns.
Note.
- Morpeth is marked by the red arrow in the South-East corner of the map.
- Galashiels, Galashiels, Hawick, Jedburgh, Peebles, Saint Boswells and Selkirk can be picked out on the map.
- The coach service would probably terminate at Galashiels, as it has a large bus terminal and and a railway station.
- Click the map to show it to a larger scale.
Morpeth to Galashiels is 69 miles and it should take about an hour and a half.
Hydrogen Buses As Rail Replacement Buses
Consider.
- I have had Rail Replacement Coaches as opposed to buses a few times in the UK.
- Once on the East Coast Main Line but usually on the Great Eastern Main Line to Ipswich or Norwich.
- They are generally more suited to their task. as they are faster and more luxurious.
- Many of our major rail lines run alongside trunk roads or motorways or fast dual carriageways.
So because hydrogen buses and coaches a have superior performance, than their diesel cousins, will hydrogen be the better fuel for a Rail Replacement Bus.
Metrobus’s Hydrogen Buses
This press release on the Metrobus web site is entitled Hydrogen Buses.

Conclusion
This bus is the best I’ve ridden in.
Crystal Palace Subway – 1st December 2024
This is the sub-heading on the Crystal Palace Subway web site.
The Grade II* listed Crystal Palace Subway is a beautifully designed and crafted relic of Victorian construction, built to provide access to the Crystal Palace for first-class rail passengers. In September 2024 a major restoration project was completed, just in time for its 160th anniversary in 2025.
These two paragraphs outline the relationship of the two stations at Crystal Palace.
The Palace was originally served by two railway stations: Crystal Palace Low Level station (still in use), which opened in 1854, and the High Level Station, designed by Charles Barry Junior, which opened in 1865 on the western side of Crystal Palace Parade.
It was intended that first-class passengers should enter the Palace through groined arches of coloured brick and stone, leading to a vestibule roofed with glass and iron, the grandeur of which was considered a fitting approach to the Crystal Palace.
These pictures give a flavour of the current Crystal Palace station.
Note.
- It is served by both Southern and London Overground services.
- The station has several good lifts.
- There are toilets in the station by the gate line.
- The station is in excellent condition.
- The cafe in the station has a good reputation and I’ve used it several times.
If like me today, you are going up the hill to the bus station, Crystal Palace Parade or Crystal Palace Subway, there is a convenient bus stop on the other side of the road from the station. Any bus going to Crystal Palace should do.

Third Rail Or Batteries Could Replace Southern Diesel Trains
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Railway Gazette International.
I first wrote about the Uckfield Branch eight years ago, in Future-Proofing The Uckfield Branch.
Since then I have written about this branch several times and I have also read several articles in the railway press.

It is an utter disgrace that no decision has been made in eight years about how to decarbonise to Uckfield.
The Railway Gazette article says this about third-rail electrification.
GTR is one of two operators participating in a Rail Safety & Standards Board project reviewing the safety, legal and regulatory issues around third rail electrification infill projects. This is looking at whole transport system safety, project and economic risks.
Bi-monthly South of England Diesel Replacement Programme meetings are held by DfT, Network Rail and GTR to review progress and options for third rail electrification of the Uckfield line or battery train trials. This includes reviewing the lessons learned from the use of bi-mode trains by GWR and LNER, and the failed attempt to deploy tri-mode Class 769 units on GWR’s North Downs services.
Could it just be that there is such fear that there will be a major incident, where several people are killed, that third-rail electrification is always turned down, by the Office of Road and Rail?
The Railway Gazette article also says this about battery trains, under a heading of Batteries Viable.
In the absence of electrification, GTR says battery powered trains are also a viable option for its diesel routes. Batteries can be charged while trains are running on electrified lines or through a rapid recharging facility at a terminus, although additional infrastructure and electrical upgrades may be needed.
I suspect that after a few teething troubles, Merseyrail would agree.
Hydrogen is also dismissed with this paragraph.
GTR has considered hydrogen but says it can only be considered a net zero-compliant fuel if it is produced from low or zero-carbon energy sources. It is also relatively inefficient with studies indicating an efficiency rate of around 35% to 40%.
It looks to me, that battery-electric trains are a viable solution.
So would it not be a good idea to take the decision to create a battery-electric prototype from a four-car Electrostar or a Class 350 train, so that the final decision can be taken after everybody on the committee has have a ride first?
Better still, why not stage a competition, where manufacturers, leasing companies or remanufacturers can build a four-car train and enter.
Allow the public to ride in them and then see what is best against a range of criteria.
The King could even get involved, as he’s probably one of the few people left, who rode the original British Rail BEMU between Aberdeen and Ballater, to get to Balmoral.
Thoughts On Extending The Northern Line To Clapham Junction
As I wrote in Northern Line Could Be Extended To Clapham Junction In Regeneration Plans, the extension of the newly-built extension to Battersea Power Station station could be further extended to Clapham Junction station.
Railways Between Battersea And Clapham
This map from OpenRailwayMap shows the tracks that run between the two stations.
Note.
- Battersea Power Station station is in the North-East corner of the map.
- The orange and yellow lines going North from that corner go to Victoria station.
- The orange and yellow lines going North-East from that corner go to Waterloo station.
- The yellow line going West is the West London Line to Shepherds Bush and Willesden Junction stations.
- Clapham Junction station is in the South-West corner of the map.
I estimate that the distance between Battersea Power Station and Clapham Junction stations is about three kilometres.

Note.
- The tracks going North over the River to Victoria station.

Note how the tracks go through Battersea Power Station station and terminate just before the lines into Victoria station.
It should also be noted that the platforms at Battersea Power Station station are reached using two sets of escalators, so they could be over forty metres below the surface. This would surely make the construction of tower blocks with deep foundations easier over the Northern Line.
But the depth would also enable an extended Northern Line to be below any existing or future construction.

There are certainly a lot of tracks through Clapham Junction station.
Reasons For The Extension Of The Northern Line To Clapham Junction
These reasons come to mind.
To Enable Development In The Area
This is always a good reason.
In Network Rail To Outline Business Case For Clapham Junction Redevelopment, I said this.
The Rail Technology Magazine article talks of decking over the whole station and putting two million square feet of development on top. But it also cautions, it would be very expensive.
With that amount of development, there would be a need for as many transport links as possible.
To Improve Access To The Elizabeth Line For Passengers On Trains To And From Victoria
Victoria station does not have an Underground Line, that connects to easily the Elizabeth Line.
The best route to use is described in The Lizzie Line And Circle/District Line Interchange At Paddington – 1st July 2022, where you use the Circle to Paddington.
- To go to the West on the Elizabeth Line, take the Circle/District Line to Paddington.
- To go to the East on the Elizabeth Line, take the District Line to Whitechapel.
- To go to Liverpool Street take the Circle Line all the way.
Getting to the stations between Paddington and Liverpool Street means a change at either of those stations.
At Waterloo, you can use the Northern Line, which has a direct connection to Tottenham Court Road on the Elizabeth Line.
Connecting to the Northern Line at Clapham Junction will give Victoria-bound passengers, the advantages of those going to Waterloo.
An Alternative Way Of Connecting Victoria To The Elizabeth Line
The lack of an easy connection between the Victoria and the Elizabeth Line is a pain and I believe that it was a major omission in the design of the Elizabeth Line.
- Dear Old Vicky has a frequency of upwards of thirty trains per hour (tph)
- With some improvements at stations like Oxford Circus, Highbury & Islington and Walthamstow Central, the line could handle some more passengers.
- More step-free access would also help increase capacity.
- Engineers are a competitive bunch and I could see the day, when Vicky is running at 40 tph.
If Vicky was running at forty full tph, it would be moving 45120 passengers per hour.
This would mean that to match the passenger capacity of the older line, the Elizabeth Line would have to be running at a frequency of thirty tph.
As passengers at the ends of the line have difficulty getting to places like Paddington and Heathrow, a connection between the two Queens would really help.
Vicky was universe-class in the 1960s and now she needs updating to the 21st Century.

In addition, consider.
The Eastern exit of the Elizabeth Line at Bond Street station has three escalators and lifts. It also opens onto Hanover Square, so it won’t suffer from overcrowding problems outside.
- Hanover Square is just a garden, with no car park underneath, so pedestrian tunnels could pass under it
- I also suspect there are no existing or planned buildings between the two stations with deep foundations that would block a pedestrian tunnel.
- With the capability and ingenuity of three-D design software, I can see wide tunnels being created that would link Oxford Circus and the two Bond Street stations.
- The new wide tunnels at Bank station have opened up the station’s capacity and all the tunnels were dug traditionally.
- If it was felt to be needed, moving walkways could be added, just as they have been at Bank station.
I am absolutely sure, that by using the ideas and methods, that have worked so well in the upgrade of Bank station, that Oxford Circus and Bond Street stations could be turned into a London Superhub Station, that connects all the Underground lines together and has entrances all over the area.
The benefits of such a station would be.
- It would provide a high-capacity link between London’s two highest-capacity Underground Lines; Elizabeth and Victoria.
- It would provide a high-capacity link between the Elizabeth Line and Euston, St. Pancras and King’s Cross.
- It would provide a high-capacity link between the Elizabeth Line and Victoria.
- It would provide a high-capacity link between the Elizabeth Line and High Speed Two.
- Areas like Brixton, Haringey and Walthamstow would gain a much needed link to the Elizabeth Line for Heathrow and Paddington.
Wikipedia says this about the building of the Bank Station Upgrade.
As part of the development of the scheme, TfL worked with potential bidders to improve the design of the station from TfL’s original design. The design proposed in the winning bid by Dragados was 9.7% cheaper than the original design (saving TfL £60m), took 10 months less time to construct than the original design (the proposed closure of the Northern line was also 5 weeks shorter), and the layout of the station was more efficient. This substantially improved the benefit–cost ratio by 45% to 3.5:1.
The Mayor should be knocking on the door of Dragados and asking them for a price for a design and build for a West End Superhub station.
A Possible Route For The Extension Of The Northern Line To Clapham Junction
I suspect that the simplest route for the extension of the Northern Line would be to bore or dig a twin-track railway underneath the numerous other railways in the area.
It could terminate in two underground platforms at Clapham Junction station.
This is the first map of this post and it shows the tracks that run between the two stations.
Note.
- Battersea Power Station station is in the North-East corner of the map.
- Clapham Junction station is in the South-West corner of the map.
The Western of the pair of orange Lines going off the map in the North-East corner of the map is the Brighton Main Line.
It passes through Battersea Park station.
It passes over the South Western Main Line out of Waterloo.
It then loops to the West and joins the lines to Clapham Junction on the Southern side.
It serves four platforms at Clapham Junction; 12 and 14 are up platforms and 13 and 15 are down platforms.

Note.
- Platforms 1 and 2 at the top of the map, handle London Overground services.
- Platforms 3 to 11 handle South Western Train services.
- Platforms 12 to 17 handle Southern services.
- Platforms 9 and 10 have a Delice de France cafe.
- Platforms 11 and 12 have a Cuppacino cafe.
- Platforms 13 and 14 have the logos.
- All platforms have full step-free access with lifts to the wide footbridge that connects all platforms.
The platforms don’t seem to be very wide and putting stairs and escalators down to underground platforms could be a difficult proposition.

- Many of the tracks are electrified.
- There is a lot of space to park trains.
Will all the space be needed now, that a new depot has been built at Feltham.
Could Two New Surface Platforms Be Built For The Extension Of The Northern Line To Clapham Junction?
Consider.
- The step-free bridge across all the platforms at Clapham Junction station works well.
- It is connected to the streets around the station at both ends.
- Clapham Junction station will be redeveloped and surplus depot land could be used for housing.
- As the maps show, there is a large gap in the platforms between the South Western Railway and the Southern sides of the station.
- As Battersea Power Station station can turn services on the Northern Line with only two platforms, there would only need to be the same number of Northern Line platforms at Clapham Junction.
So could an extra pair of platforms be built under the bridge, with stairs and a lift similar to the existing platforms?
- The platform would have full step-free access.
- The platforms could be long enough for any future trains.
- There could be sidings for a few trains.
- The tunnels from Battersea Power Station would surface just outside the station.
- There would need to be a crossover or a turnback siding for operational reasons.
I also think, that once the depot and sidings at Clapham Junction have released the space, the new platforms and tracks could be installed without interrupting main line services through the station.
Would The Extension Of The Northern Line Be Electrified?
Consider.
- Merseyrail were not allowed to use third-rail electrification to Headbolt Lane station and had to use batteries.
- The Northern Line was extended to Battersea Power Station station using London’s four-rail electrified system.
- Clapham Junction station has third-rail electrification everywhere.
I think that the authorities would be very churlish not to allow electrification to Clapham Junction.
Conclusion
I believe it is possible to extend the Northern Line to two new surface platforms at Clapham Junction station.
But I also believe that using similar methods to those used in the Bank Station Upgrade, that a full interchange between the Elizabeth and Victoria Lines can be built at Oxford Circus and Bond Street.

Defibrillators Installed At Every Southern And Thameslink Train Station
The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on The Argus.
The title says it all!
It is obviously a good development.
I also think, that there should be instructions by the defibrillator, as to the quickest way to call medical help.
Good News For Southern Rail Users
In the December 2017 Edition of Modern Railways, there is an article entitled Thameslink Improvements – Coming In Stages.
The sarticle details how the Thameslink services will be introduced and finishes with a section entitled Southern Too, which gives a summary of complimentary changes on Southern.
Chris Gibb told Modern Railways this in an apparently chipper mood.
Whilst the Thameslink changes have caught the spotlight, changes on Southern in May 2018 are of an equally momentous nature. Next year will see the biggest change to the Southern timetable since privatisation, with operations simplified on the Metro network by minimising frequency changes and avoiding conflicts at flat junctions.
The idea is that longer, fixed formation trains will work on the same route all day with the same frequency at peak and off peak.
It certainly would cut out some of the long waits I’ve had on Southern.
I very much believe that in a station that serves say 50,000 residents, that to wait more than thirty minutes is a good reason to not go back again.
Will we see a frequency of four trains per hour, as favoured by Merseyrail and the London Overground?
The article also says that most of Chris Gibbs recommendations for Southern have been accepted!
So should we expect more changes?
- Ashford-Hastings to new Southeastern franchise
- Cambridge depot for Thameslink
- East Croydon to Milton Keynes to London Overground
- Gatwick Airport Station To Gatwick Airport
- Hoo Junction Depot
- Innovative electrification on the Uckfield Line
- Moorgate services to the Overground
- More station shelters
- Some little-used stations have too many services
- Too many off peak services
The Moorgate services have already been turned down, but that line generally needs a kick-up-the-backside and at least a good clean.
