Application Of Control Engineering Principles To The Calculation Of Pharmaceutical Drug Doses

Today, I was asked by an eminent cardiologist to give my opinion on this scientific paper in the Journal of the American Heart Association, which was entitled Personalized Antihypertensive Treatment Optimization With Smartphone‐Enabled Remote Precision Dosing of Amlodipine During the COVID‐19 Pandemic (PERSONAL‐CovidBP Trial).

This was the background to the study.

The objective of the PERSONAL‐CovidBP (Personalised Electronic Record Supported Optimisation When Alone for Patients With Hypertension: Pilot Study for Remote Medical Management of Hypertension During the COVID‐19 Pandemic) trial was to assess the efficacy and safety of smartphone‐enabled remote precision dosing of amlodipine to control blood pressure (BP) in participants with primary hypertension during the COVID‐19 pandemic.

These were the methods and the results.

This was an open‐label, remote, dose titration trial using daily home self‐monitoring of BP, drug dose, and side effects with linked smartphone app and telemonitoring. Participants aged ≥18 years with uncontrolled hypertension (5–7 day baseline mean ≥135 mm Hg systolic BP or ≥85 mm Hg diastolic BP) received personalized amlodipine dose titration using novel (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 mg) and standard (5 and 10 mg) doses daily over 14 weeks. The primary outcome of the trial was mean change in systolic BP from baseline to end of treatment. A total of 205 participants were enrolled and mean BP fell from 142/87 (systolic BP/diastolic BP) to 131/81 mm Hg (a reduction of 11 (95% CI, 10–12)/7 (95% CI, 6–7) mm Hg, P<0.001). The majority of participants achieved BP control on novel doses (84%); of those participants, 35% were controlled by 1 mg daily. The majority (88%) controlled on novel doses had no peripheral edema. Adherence to BP recording and reported adherence to medication was 84% and 94%, respectively. Patient retention was 96% (196/205). Treatment was well tolerated with no withdrawals from adverse events.

These were the conclusions.

Personalized dose titration with amlodipine was safe, well tolerated, and efficacious in treating primary hypertension. The majority of participants achieved BP control on novel doses, and with personalization of dose there were no trial discontinuations due to drug intolerance. App‐assisted remote clinician dose titration may better balance BP control and adverse effects and help optimize long‐term care.

About Myself

I am a Graduate Control Engineer, who graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1968.

I then worked at ICI in Runcorn for eighteen months, before moving to ICI Plastics Division, because of the untimely death of my father-in-law.

One of my tasks at Welwyn, was to look at control algorithms for chemical plants. For this I often used a PACE 231-R analogue computer.

Note.

  1. These computers could solve up to a hundred simultaneous differential equations at one time.
  2. They were programmed by wiring the various amplifiers and potentiometers together to simulate the equations.
  3. There were only a few transistors in these powerful machines, as all electronics were thermionic valves.
  4. Two of these machines wired together, were used to calculate the trajectories of the Apollo missions.

They were the unsung heroes of bringing Jim Lovell and Apollo 13 home safely.

Determining Control Algorithms

In a typical problem, I would model the a section of a chemical plant and the control system around it.

This would then lead to recommendations, as to the design and operation of the plant, so that it performed as required.

It could be argued that the body of an animal, is a very complicated integrated chemical plant, with a sophisticated control system.

For instance, if sensors around the body, say you are slightly low on fluids, your brain determines you should have a drink.

Many control loops on a chemical plant are controlled by proportional–integral–derivative controllers, which are commonly known as three-term controllers.

This is the first two paragraphs of the Wikipedia entry for three-term controllers.

A proportional–integral–derivative controller (PID controller or three-term controller) is a control loop mechanism employing feedback that is widely used in industrial control systems and a variety of other applications requiring continuously modulated control. A PID controller continuously calculates an error value

PID systems automatically apply accurate and responsive correction to a control function. An everyday example is the cruise control on a car, where ascending a hill would lower speed if constant engine power were applied. The controller’s PID algorithm restores the measured speed to the desired speed with minimal delay and overshoot by increasing the power output of the engine in a controlled manner.

I wouldn’t be surprised that the app in the smartphone used in the PERSONAL‐CovidBP Trial contained a form of three-term controller.

These are some points about three-term control algorithms.

Changing Of External Factors

One that was the villain in a problem, I dealt with, also affects my body – the weather.

I was asked to look at the problem of a chemical reaction, that overheated in hot weather. But the plant operators solved it by better insulation and ventilation of the plant and the standard three-term controller adjusted itself automatically to the new conditions.

After my stroke, I am on Warfarin for life. I test my own INR with a Roche meter and I have noticed that atmospheric pressure affects my INR. I change my deose accordingly, using a simple algorithm, of my own design.

The More You Test The More Precise The Control

If you take the cruise control example used by Wikipedia, speed is monitored continuously, as I hope, it would be if you were driving yourself.

But obviously, in many systems, where you are using an input with discrete values to control a system, you can’t be as precise as the data you collect.

When my son was dying from pancreatic cancer, he was fitted with a morphine pump, that he could adjust himself to dull the immense pain he was enduring.

  • His nerves and his brain ascertained the pain level.
  • He then adjusted the morphine level.
  • He could get very precise control of his pain, because he was measuring it continuously.

But he was only using simple one-term control (proportional).

Derivative Control Can Be Difficult To Get Right And Can Even Go Unstable

Derivative control is mainly to stop overshoot, but sometimes you will find that it can go unstable, so two-term(proportional+integral) controllers will be used.

How I Control My INR

As I said earlier, I am on Warfarin for life and test my INR with a Roche meter.

The NHS typically tests patients about once every six weeks, which in my opinion as a Control Engineer is too infrequent.

I usually test myself a couple of times a week.

But every so often, I evaluate what daily dose gives me an equilibrium INR level of 2.5.

For the last three years, I have found a dose of 3.75 mg keeps me more or less on 2.5.

  • As Warfarin comes in 1, 3, 5 and 10 mg. tablets, I alternate 3.5 and 4 mg.
  • Warfarin tablets are easily cut in half using a sharp knife.
  • I record INR and dose in a spreadsheet.

I have been doing this now for over ten years.

Is This A Unique Property Of Warfarin?

In this time, I have had five medical procedures, where surgeons were worried, that as I was on Warfarin, I might bleed too much.

For the first, which was to remove a lump from my mouth, the private surgeon wanted to charge extra for an anaesthetist. In the end, I asked what INR he wanted and he said 2.1 should be OK!

  • So I reduced the Warfarin level and tested every day.
  • I judged it correctly and had an INR of 2.1 on the day of the operation.
  • The operation went incredibly well and I went home on public transport.
  • The lump turned out to be benign.
  • I’ve not had another lump.

After the operation, I increased the Warfarin level and tested every day, until it regained a level of 2.5.

On analysing my doses through the date of the operation, I found that the total amount of Warfarin, I didn’t take to reduce my INR to 2.1, was the same as I took to bring it back up again to 2.5.

Is this a unique property of Warfarin?

Since then I’ve had two cataract operations performed in a private hospital, where the NHS paid. Interestingly, they wouldn’t trust my own INR readings, so I had to get my GP to take the measurement.

I’ve also had gallstones removed by endoscopy at the local Homerton NHS hospital.

  • For cases like mine, the hospital hire in a surgeon from the posh Wellington private hospital for one day a week, who brings the specialist tools needed.
  • I wrote about this in Goodbye To My Gallstones.
  • As it was a more serious procedure, I reduced my INR to a requested 1.0.

Interestingly, I still have my gall bladder, but the surgeon put it on notice to behave.

Conclusion

I would totally agree with the conclusion given in the PERSONAL‐CovidBP Trial.

Personalized dose titration with amlodipine was safe, well tolerated, and efficacious in treating primary hypertension. The majority of participants achieved BP control on novel doses, and with personalization of dose there were no trial discontinuations due to drug intolerance. App‐assisted remote clinician dose titration may better balance BP control and adverse effects and help optimize long‐term care.

I would add some conclusions of my own.

  • The app used in the PERSONAL‐CovidBP Trial, seems to have had a good algorithm.
  • I suspect the app could also be Internet-based.

These are some general conclusions.

  • If you are on Warfarin and have access to a Roche meter, it is possible to lower your INR to the value required by a surgeon for an operation or a procedure.
  • Since starting to take Warfarin, I have had four operations or procedures, where others would have had anaesthetic or a sedative.
  • In those four operations, I was able to go home on public transport. If I still drove a car, I could have driven home afterwards.
  • Private hospitals like to use an anesthetist, as it pumps up the bill.
  • Avoiding anaesthesia must save hospitals money.

Well designed apps, based on Control Engineering principles, that help the patient take the best dose of a drug will become more common.

A World First For Liverpool

This article on The Engineer is entitled ABB Grid Balancing Facility Comes Online.

This is the sub-heading.

A significant new project to provide vital inertia across the UK’s electricity grid has gone live at the Lister Drive Greener Grid Park in Liverpool.

These are the first two paragraphs.

Featuring two ABB synchronous condensers, the facility is designed to replicate the inertia currently provided by spinning turbines at coal and gas-fired plants. This inertia is essential for maintaining the correct frequency and voltage across electricity grids, so an alternative source must be installed as thermal generation is replaced by wind and solar, which provide no inertia.

Developed for Norwegian renewable energy firm Statkraft, Lister Drive is the first project anywhere in the world to feature a high-inertia configuration that couples a synchronous condenser with a 40-tonne flywheel. According to ABB, this approach increases the instantaneously available inertia by 3.5 times, ensuring the network frequency and voltage are held stable within the tight limits essential to maintain grid reliability.

In my Electrical Engineering degree course at Liverpool University, I opted out of power engineering, as I preferred Electronics and Control Engineering. So I am indebted to this Wikipedia entry for what a synchronous condenser is and does.

Statkraft seem to be developing several of their Greener Grid Parks, in various places in the UK.

Google Starts Building £790m Site In Hertfordshire

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.

This is the sub-heading.

Google has invested $1bn (£790m) to build its first UK data centre

These are the first four paragraphs.

The tech giant said construction had started at a 33-acre site in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, and hoped it would be completed by 2025.

Google stressed it was too early to say how many jobs would be created but it would need engineers, project managers, data centre technicians, electricians, catering and security personnel.

The prime minister said it showed the UK had “huge potential for growth”.

The project marked the latest investment by a major US tech firm in Britain, after Microsoft announced it would invest £2.5bn to expand data centres for artificial intelligence (AI) across the UK.

Note.

  1. By “completed by 2025” do they mean completed before 2025 or completed by the end of 2025. Judging by the time they took to build their London HQ, its the latter.
  2. Rishi is right about the UK having a huge potential for growth! Especially, if the nihilists of the United States vote in the Big Orange!
  3. Judging by the total spend of £2.5 billion on data centres and the £790 million for this one, this looks to be the first of three.

But where is this data centre going to be built?

This article on EssexLive is entitled Google To Move Into Waltham Cross With £788m Data Centre To Support ‘AI Innovation’, where this is said.

The new data centre will go on land at Maxwell’s Farm, next to the A10 Great Cambridge Road and around one mile from the M25 junction 25. Debbie Weinstein, Google vice president and managing director in the UK and Ireland, set out the decision in a blog post on Thursday, January 18 – the fourth day of the World Economic Forum’s Davos 2024 in Switzerland.

This is a Goggle Map of that area, when I searched for Maxwell’s Farm.

Note.

  1. The red arrow indicates the result of my search, which Google interpreted as A.J. Maxwell.
  2. The dual-carriageway road running down the East side of the map is the A10 between London and Cambridge.
  3. The A10 road joins the M25 at Junction 25.
  4. The arrow to the South-West of the roundabout indicates the new studios; Sunset Waltham Cross, which is being built.
  5. At the other side of the studio site, there is a label saying New River and this important piece of London’s water infrastructure can be traced to the top of the map.
  6. The other dual-carriageway road is the B198 or Lieutenant Ellis Way.
  7. A quick calculation shows that 33 acres is roughly a 365 metre square.

I would suspect that the data centre will lie somewhere between the A10, the B198 and the New River.

Note.

  1. There appears to be a lane running East-West, that crosses over both the A10 and the New River.
  2. Theobalds Lane appears to have some housing and possibly a farm.
  3. The smaller field by the roundabout appears to have some animals using it as grazing.
  4. The field between the East-West lane and Theobalds Lane appears to have a good crop of cereal.

The East-West lane would appear to be a possible Southern border of the site.

  3. The New River appears to form, the Eastern boundary of the school site.

  3. A hedge runs roughly East-West to the North of the Enterprise Centre.
  4. North of the hedge are a number of football pitches, which appear to belong to the Affinity Academy at Goffs Churchgate.

The hedge could be the Northern boundary of the Google site.

This Google Map shows the area between the South of the Enterprise Centre and the East-West lane I picked out earlier.

A crude measurement indicates it could be around 33 acres or slightly more.

This picture is used in nearly all the news reports about the Data Centre.

Note.

  1. Could that be the gentle curve of the New River on the left?
  2. With the high fence, the New River forms an almost-mediaeval defence against trespassers.
  3. There looks to be a dual-carriageway road running down the other side of the site, which would be the A10.
  4. Between the A10 and the site, there appears to be loots of dark areas, which I take to be car parks.
  5. Are the car-parking spaces in the front of the picture marked for those, who are disabled? There certainly appear to be chargers on some spaces.

I have a few thoughts.

The Relative Locations Of Google’s Data Centre And Sunset Studios?

This Google Map shows the two sites to the West of the A10.

Note.

  1. St. Mary’s High School is in the North-West corner of the map.
  2. Cheshunt Football Club is in the North-East corner of the map.
  3. The dual-carriageway A10 runs North-South on the map.
  4. I believe that Google’s Waltham Cross Data Centre will be located in the field to the West of the A10, at the top of the map.
  5. The A10 connects to the M25 at Junction 25, which is in the centre at the bottom of the map.
  6. In The Location Of Sunset Studios In Broxbourne,  Sunset Studios are placed to the North West of the Junction 25 roundabout.
  7. Just as the A10 forms the Eastern boundary of both sites, the New River forms the Western boundary.

The two sites are close together between the A10 and the New River, separated by the dual-carriageway Lieutenant Ellis Way.

Will Google’s Data Centre Be Storing Data For Sunset Studios?

I’ve never worked in the production of films, but these days with digital electronic cameras, CGI, motion capture and other techniques, producing a film must need huge amounts of data storage.

  • So have Sunset Studios outsourced their data storage needs to Google?
  • Perhaps too, Sunset Studios found the local authority welcoming and this attitude was recommended to Google.
  • Both sites will need local services like electricity, gas, sewage and water.

I suspect that there would be cost savings in construction and operation, if the two sites shared the utilities.

Providing Electricity And Heat For Both Sites

Consider.

  • I estimate from information given in the Wikipedia entry for Google Data Centres, that a data centre needs between 10 and 12 MW.
  • There is no obvious power source like offshore wind or a nuclear power station nearby.
  • There is the 715 MW Rye House gas-fired power station, which is a few miles away.
  • In Google Buys Scottish Offshore Wind Power, I talked about how Google had signed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement to buy 100 MW from the Moray West offshore wind farm.

Google and Sunset Studios would also want an electrical and heat supply that is at least 100 % reliable.

Liverpool University had the same problem on their hundred acre campus in the centre of Liverpool.

  • The University decided to build their own 4 MW Combined Heat and Power Unit (CHP), which is described in this data sheet.
  • It is fired by natural gas.
  • On their web site, Liverpool University state that their CHP can be adapted to different fuel blends. I take this includes zero-carbon fuels like hydrogen and carbon-neutral fuels like biomethane.

But given their location in Waltham Cross close to the Lea Valley, CHP units may have a use for their carbon dioxide.

  4. So why should Tomworld need a lot of carbon-dioxide?

  1. This web page indicates what Tomworld do.
  2. They have 44 acres of glass growing tomatoes, about five miles to the North-East of Google’s Data Centre.
  3. The map has lots of other greenhouses.

I know of a guy, who has a large greenhouse, that grows tomatoes for the supermarkets.

  • He heats the greenhouse with a gas-fired Combined Heat and Power Unit (CHP).
  • The electricity produced runs his business.
  • Any surplus electricity is fed into the grid.
  • The carbon dioxide is fed to the plants in the greenhouse, which helps them grow quality tomatoes.

I just wonder, if carbon dioxide from CHP units at Google’s Data Centre and Sunset Studios could be used by the multitude of greenhouses in the Lea Valley.

Could A Carbon Dioxide Pipeline Be Built Along The M25?

I wonder, if a carbon dioxide pipeline could be built along the M25 to connect the producers to those who could use it?

  • It would not be a dangerous pipeline as carbon dioxide is a fire extinguisher.
  • It wouldn’t be a huge pipe.

I think it would be possible.

Google’s Commitment To Being Zero-Carbon

This blog post on the Google web site is entitled Our $1 Billion Investment In A New UK Data Centre, has a section, which has a sub-title of 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy By 2030, where this is a paragraph.

Additionally, we’re also exploring new and innovative ways to use the heat generated by data centres, and this new facility will also have provisions for off-site heat recovery. Off-site heat recovery presents an opportunity for energy conservation that benefits the local community, as it allows us to capture the heat generated by the data centre so that it can be used by nearby homes and businesses. The data centre is also set to deploy an air-based cooling system.

If they are  using off-site heat recovery, it would be logical to use waste carbon dioxide from CHPs to provide carbon dioxide for the local horticultural businesses.

Will Google Be Building A Vertical Farm Nearby?

In Schneider Electric: Vertical Farming – The Next Yield In Data Centre Sustainability, I noted that some data centres are paired with vertical farms to increase their sustainability.

Could Google be doing that in Waltham Cross?

  • They will have a lot of waste heat.
  • They will have a fair bit of carbon dioxide, which could be used to help plants grow.
  • The local workforce probably contains a lot of experience of market gardening.

I like the idea of pairing a data centre and a vertical farm.

Public Transport Access

Consider.

  • Increasingly, the cost of electric vehicles, medical problems and the UK economic situation are causing people to adopt a car-free lifestyle.
  • After my stroke, my eyesight deteriorated such, that I am no longer allowed to drive.
  • Others may live in one-car families and it may not be their’s to use every day.
  • Or your car may just break down on the way to work.

For these and probably lots of other reasons, any large site employing a lot of employees, must have a valid way of getting there by public transport.

The nearest rail station to Google’s Data Centre and Sunset Studios is Theobalds Grove station.

Note.

  2. Google’s Data Centre will be just off the map to the West of the A10.
  3. Theobalds Grove station is marked by the TfL roundel in the North-East corner of the map.
  4. There would appear to be no bus stops on Winston Churchill Way or the A10.

Note.

  1. At that point, I gave up because of the cold and pollution.
  2. It was also a Saturday morning about midday.

The route I took is certainly not an alternative route to get to Google’s Data Centre or Sunset Studios.

A Possible Station At Park Plaza North

This article on the BBC is entitled Broxbourne: Two New Stations Planned.

This is the sub-heading.

Two new train stations could be built in Hertfordshire if plans to tighten planning policies are adopted.

This is the first paragraph.

Broxbourne Borough Council said stops at Park Plaza North – between Turkey Street and Theobalds Grove London Overground stations – and Turnford on the London to Bishop’s Stortford route would be subject to a consultation.

Later the BBC say that Park Plaza North station will be South of the A121 Winston Churchill Way near Waltham Cross

This Google Map shows the area South-East of the roundabout, where Winston Churchill Way meets the A10.

Note.

  1. The green patch of land to the South-East of the roundabout where Winston Churchill Way meets the A10 appears to be ripe for development.
  2. Looking at the green patch with a higher resolution, the land is little more than high class scrub beloved of newts.
  3. The London Overground line to Cheshunt runs down the East side of the site.
  4. To the North, the London Overground crosses Winston Churchill Way to get to Theobalds Grove station.
  5. To the South, the London Overground crosses the M25 to get to Turkey Street station.
  6. There is a lane running East-West along the South edge of the site, which crosses the railway in a level crossing.

This is certainly one, that drivers dread.

Note.

  1. The level crossing is in the South-East corner of the map.
  2. There isn’t much space to put a London-bound platform on the East side of the tracks, South of the Park Road circle.
  3. There is plenty of space to put a Cheshunt-bound platform on the West side of the tracks.
  4. North of the Park Road circle, there would appear to be space for two platforms.

It will need a lot of ingenuity to provide a safe and efficient solution to the problems of the level crossing and fitting a station in this limited space.

The first thing I’d do, would be to dig an underpass for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the two halves of Park Lane.

Centrica Business Solutions Delivers Significant Energy Savings For The Pirbright Institute

The title of this post, is the same as that of this press release from Centrica.

These three paragraphs outline the project.

Centrica Business Solutions has partnered with The Pirbright Institute to deliver sustainable on-site technology that will help reduce its net energy use by more than 10 per cent by 2026.

Centrica installed a new Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP), which will provide around 75 per cent of Pirbright’s future power needs. The CHP uses natural gas to generate electricity and hot water at the site, with its exhaust gases also used to feed into a heat recovery generator to provide steam. It means CHP technology is over twice as efficient as conventional power sources and can lower organisational reliance on the Grid.

The Institute, which is dedicated to the study of infectious diseases of farm animals, has already devised an energy plan which has introduced energy-saving upgrades across the Surrey campus, including the closure of energy-inefficient buildings, the introduction of efficient lighting and a programme to raise staff awareness of energy consumption.

The system is still powered by natural gas.

Liverpool University

I was an undergraduate at Liverpool University and according to this page on their web site, which is entitled Sustainability, they seem to be following a similar route to the Pirbright Institute.

With a heading of Energy And Carbon, this is the mission statement.

The University’s ambition is to be a climate-resilient campus, that has minimal negative and maximum positive environmental impact, achieving net zero carbon by 2035. We monitor energy and carbon across the entire University as part of the Climate plan and in support of the Sustainability Strategy and Strategy2026 net zero carbon targets.

One section of the page has a title of The Green Recovery with Clarke Energy at the University’s Energy Centre, where this is said.

The University of Liverpool generates up to 90% of its campuses electricity needs on site in the Energy Centre, through CHP. Clarke Energy help the University operate CHP in the most efficient way, keeping us on track with technological developments, such as how the CHP can be adapted to take different fuel blends.

Although there is a nod to different fuel blends, I suspect that the system, like that at Pirbright, is currently powered by natural gas.

Clarke Energy, is headquartered in Liverpool and is a division of Kohler.

Centrica And HiiROC

CHP systems are becoming more common and like these two systems, they are generally powered by natural gas.

In Plans Submitted For Hydrogen Pilot Plant At Humber Power Station, I describe how Hull-based start-up; HiiROC are going to help fuel a gas-fired power station with a hydrogen blend.

This is a paragraph from this article on Business Live, which describes Centrica’s relationship with HiiROC.

It comes as the owner of British Gas has also increased its shareholding in the three-year-old business to five per cent. Last November it was one of several investors to pump £28 million into HiiRoc alongside Melrose Industries, HydrogenOne, Cemex, Hyundai and Kia, who joined existing strategic investors Wintershall Dea and VNG.

HiiROC’s system can take any hydrocarbon gas from biomethane, through chemical plant waste gas to natural gas and convert it to hydrogen and carbon black.

Carbon black has a large number of manufacturing uses and can also be used in agriculture to improve soil.

It looks to me, that HiiROC’s systems will be a simple way to convert natural gas-powered CHPs to zero carbon.

Set Back As Badgers Undermine 11 km Of Railway

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Railway Gazette International.

These four paragraphs outline the problems.

Deutsche Bahn reports that burrowing badgers have undermined about 11 km of embankment on the Fröndenberg – Unna railway, and repairs are likely to be very expensive and take a long time as the damage is more extensive than expected.

In some places the repairs will be equivalent to new construction, and DB says the planning and approval phase alone could take several years as the route passes through protected environments. Local media reports that the financial viability of reopening is being questioned.

DB first discovered the damage in 2022, and initiated repairs using a concrete spraying process. It also began to examine the rest of the route and 140 sett entrances have now been discovered, leading to an extensive tunnel system which is believed to have a total length of around 1 500 m spread over the entire length of the embankment.

The line runs through a nature reserve, so investigations had to be suspended over the summer until a special permit was obtained. Trees and bushes also needed to be cut back. Regional train service RB54 remains suspended between Unna and Fröndenberg and replaced by buses, extending journey times by 7 min.

Note.

  1. The railway appears to be only single-track from Google Maps.
  2. Unna station is the Easternmost station of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn.
  3. The RB 54 – Hönnetal-Bahn runs between Fröndenberg and Unna.

I wouldn’t be surprised that this serious problem will be resolved by either closing the railway permanently or by using an expensive rebuild.

How Network Rail Deal With Badgers

I did find this document on the Network Rail web site, which appears to be part of a Safety Course.

There is this page on the Network Rail web site, which is entitled Badgers Sett To Keep Their Homes As Railway Works Around.

Unfortunately for the Germans, they seem to have whole armies of badgers, whereas we seem to have just a couple of families in the second document.

It does look like in the video in the second example, that a certain amopunt of psychology is used to persuade the badgers to do, what Network Rail wants them to do.

Sheep And The M62

When I was at Liverpool University in the 1960s, the Veterinary Department had a contract to design fencing to keep the hardy Pennine sheep off the motorway.

They found that the sheep had little difficulty climbing over a six foot high wire mesh fence.

Perhaps DB should ask Liverpool, if they have any tips!

Rolls-Royce Announces Successful Run Of UltraFan Technology Demonstrator To Maximum Power

The title of this post, is the same as that of this press release from Rolls-Royce.

This is the sub-heading.

Rolls-Royce today announces it has successfully run its UltraFan® technology demonstrator to maximum power at its facility in Derby, UK. The initial stage of the test was conducted using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

These are the first four paragraphs.

This is an important milestone for the UltraFan demonstrator, which was successfully tested for the first time earlier this year. Since then, the UltraFan team has been gradually increasing the power as part of the rigorous testing regime and the demonstrator has performed in line with our expectations. The results of the test will provide us with valuable learning and data, which our teams will now take away and continue to analyse.

This achievement reinforces our confidence in the suite of technologies that has been developed as part of the UltraFan programme. Confirming this capability is a big step towards improving the efficiency of current and future aero-engines as UltraFan delivers a 10% efficiency improvement over our Trent XWB, which is already the world’s most efficient large aero-engine in service. In total that’s a 25% efficiency gain since the launch of the first Trent engine.

UltraFan’s scalable technology from ~25,000-110,000lb thrust also offers the potential to power the new narrowbody and widebody aircraft anticipated in the 2030s.

As part of the UltraFan development programme we have identified a number of technologies that are potentially transferable to our current Trent engines, which will provide our customers with even greater availability, reliability and efficiency.

These are my thoughts.

What Is UltraFan?

UltraFan has a section in the Wikipedia entry for the Rolls-Royce Trent engine, where these are the two opening paragraphs.

After the Advance comes the UltraFan, initially aimed to be ready for service from 2025. A geared turbofan with a variable pitch fan system that promises at least 25% improvement in fuel burn, the UltraFan aims for a 15:1 bypass ratio and 70:1 overall pressure ratio.

The Ultrafan keeps the Advance core, but also contains a geared turbofan architecture with variable-pitch fan blades. As the fan will vary pitch to be optimised for each flight phase, it won’t need a thrust reverser. Rolls-Royce will use carbon composite fan blades instead of its usual hollow titanium blades, and along with new material adoption will save 340 kg (750 lb) per engine.

This is a bit different from previous engines.

Variable-Pitch Fan Blades

Variable Pitch Fan has its own Wikipedia entry, where these are the two opening paragraphs.

A variable pitch fan is similar in concept to that of a variable-pitch propeller and involves progressively reducing the pitch (or blade angle) of the fan on a turbofan as the engine is throttled. Although variable pitch fans are used in some industrial applications, the focus of this article is on their use in turbofan engines. No production engine uses such a feature; however, it will likely be required on at least some of the next generation of high bypass ratio turbofans.

One of the methods used to reduce Thrust-specific fuel consumption is to improve Propulsive Efficiency. This involves reducing the effective jet velocity of the engine by reducing specific thrust. This, in turn, reduces the optimum fan pressure ratio required and consequently the cold nozzle pressure ratio. At cruise flight speeds the nozzle is choked and the fan working line is fairly steep and linear. However, at low flight speeds the ram pressure rise in the air intake is so low the nozzle is well un-choked. Consequently, the fan working line is highly curved and well to the left of the cruise flight speed working line, potentially reducing the fan surge margin to a dangerous level, particularly at lower throttle settings. Readers unfamiliar with surge lines, working lines, etc. should read the Wikipedia article on Compressor map.

The extract says that no production engine uses this feature. So will UltraFan be the first?

Variable pitch fan blades seem to offer two advantages; better efficiency and lower weight. If the reliability is acceptable, then that must be a winner.

No Thrust Reverser

This sentence is also in the Wikipedia entry for Variable Pitch Fan.

One advantage of the variable fan option is that varying the fan pitch offers the possibility of reversing engine thrust without the need for heavy blocker doors, cascades, etc.

It does look like the UltraFan will be a lighter engine, than its predecessor.

Composite Fan Blades

Composite Fan Blades were tried in the 1960s for the Rolls-Royce RB211 engine.

But they failed and were replaced by titanium blades.

At the time, I was at Liverpool University and John Wilkinson was a fellow student.

John’s father was the manager of a Tesco store in Derby.

That Tesco store had a nice line in selling out-of-date chickens and turkeys to Rolls-Royce to test the engines for bird strikes.

Improving The Engine’s Efficiency

This is the second paragraph of the press release.

This achievement reinforces our confidence in the suite of technologies that has been developed as part of the UltraFan programme. Confirming this capability is a big step towards improving the efficiency of current and future aero-engines as UltraFan delivers a 10% efficiency improvement over our Trent XWB, which is already the world’s most efficient large aero-engine in service. In total that’s a 25% efficiency gain since the launch of the first Trent engine.

Note.

  1. The Trent engine was first run in 1990 and has improved 25 % since.
  2. The Trent XWB engine was first run in 2010 and has improved 10 % since.

The increase in efficiency appears to be linear.

A Saleable Design

This is the third paragraph of the press release.

UltraFan’s scalable technology from ~25,000-110,000lb thrust also offers the potential to power the new narrowbody and widebody aircraft anticipated in the 2030s.

If that means that an UltraFan can power an aircraft as small as an A320, then that is sensational, as it will give Rolls-Royce access to the A320/Boeing 737 market, where they have virtually no sales.

UltraFan Is About A Suite Of Technologies

This is from the second paragraph of the extract.

This achievement reinforces our confidence in the suite of technologies that has been developed as part of the UltraFan programme.

And this is the fourth paragraph.

As part of the UltraFan development programme we have identified a number of technologies that are potentially transferable to our current Trent engines, which will provide our customers with even greater availability, reliability and efficiency.

As you learn more about your future project, why not apply that knowledge to current projects.

Running On SAF Is Part Of The Testing

I’m reassured that testing of the technology using Sustainable Aviation Fuel has started early in the program.

This is surely going to be the fuel, that aircraft will use until hydrogen becomes available.

Conclusion

It looks like Rolls-Royce are redefining, what a standard aero engine looks like.

  1. It will give a 10 % fuel saving over their latest engines launched thirteen years ago.
  2. The UltraFan engines will save weight and hopefully more fuel.
  3. It will allow Rolls-Royce to compete in the A320/737 market, where they have no engine at present.

Bonus For GPs If Patients Join Drug Trials In Plan To Lure Firms To NHS

£650m boost for medical research after number of participants slumps

These three paragraphs outline what is to be done.

Tens of thousands more patients will be signed up for clinical trials as ministers promise drug companies better access to the NHS to expand the economy and develop cutting-edge treatments.

Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor, is promising a £650 million package to boost life sciences as he attempts to lure pharmaceutical giants to Britain.

GPs will be offered financial incentives to recruit patients into trials of new treatments and hospitals will be given research targets under plans to reverse a slump in clinical testing while the NHS struggles with the backlog from Covid-19.

It all sounds good to me.

I have been involved in several trials and medical research projects.

  • As part of my coeliac disease diagnosis, one endoscopy was performed by Rebecca Fitzgerald at Cambridge, as she was taking samples of bile fluids for her research into Barrett’s esophagus.
  • After the death of my wife, I was interviewed by PhD students in the Psychology Department at Liverpool University for their research into widowhood.
  • Oxford University interviewed me on diet for their coeliac disease research.
  • After my stroke, I spent an entertaining afternoon at the University of East London doing balance tests by computer. Their aim was to develop a reliable balance test for stroke and other patients, that could be carried out by physiotherapists quickly, than by more expensive doctors.
  • I have also been on a drug trial at Queen Mary University, but that drug was useless and had no good or bad affects, so the trial was halted. However, it did lead to other enjoyable activities in the field of patient relations with treatment and research.

As a confirmed coward, I should note that with the exception of the drug trial, all of the other projects were low risk.

I should say, that I also sponsor pancreatic cancer research at Liverpool University, in memory of my son, who died from the disease. I wrote about the first Liverpool project in There’s More To Liverpool Than Football And The Beatles!.

A Database Of Projects Open For Volunteers

I believe that this is needed, so that those like me, who like to contribute to research can volunteer.

Perhaps some of the £650 million, that has been promised by Jeremy Hunt, could be used to create the database.

I also believe the database could be used for other non-medical research.

Medical Research

I first got involved as a lab-rat in medical research, when I had my second endoscopy to check for coeliac disease at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 1997. Rebecca Fitzgerald took a sample of fluid from my gut for her Barrett’s oesophagus research.

After my wife died, I asked my contact in Alumni Relations at Liverpool University, if they did widowhood research.

They are one of the few universities that do and I did several interviews for PhD students in the unit, which is in the Psychology Department. It was very much a positive experience and certainly helped with my grieving.

In some ways the most enjoyable piece of research I have been involved in, was at the University of East London, where they were using computers to measure the balance of those recovering from strokes.

My GP also suggested that I get involved in drug tests at Queen Mary University. The tests were abandoned as the drug didn’t have any good or bad effects, but now I’m one of the William Harvey Centre’s lab-rats.

I also help to sponsor pancreatic cancer research at Liverpool University in memory of my son.

In There’s More To Liverpool Than Football And The Beatles!, I detail some research, that I sponsored in a small way.

I may be tempted to do the fund-raising trip again.

I always advise people to get involved in medical or psychological research, as I have found it such a beneficial experience.

One thing that is needed, is an on-line database of all research projects that are looking for volunteers.

Remember, that much medical and psychological research is about as dangerous as meeting someone in a GP’s surgery for a chat or perhaps in a cafe and having a coffee.

A Few Bad Years

In 2007, my wife died of what her consultant at Papworth said was one of the worst cancers he’d ever seen. It was a squamous cell carcinoma of the heart.

Her’s was the only occurrence in the UK that year and someone told me, there were four in the United States.

Our youngest son; George, then died of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

When I had been diagnosed as a coeliac in 1997, my wife and I had told our sons to get themselves tested, as is now advised on the NHS web site.

But George was a sound engineer in the music business, who lived the unhealthy rock-and-roll lifestyle.

A year later, I had a serious stroke in Hong Kong.

I had had a warning a year or so before and Addenbrooke’s recommended I go on Warfarin, but my GP in Suffolk, talked me out of it.

Now twelve years later, my GP and myself manage my Warfarin, where I do the testing of my INR on my own meter from Roche.

But then I am a Graduate Control Engineer!

A couple of doctors have said I have made a remarkable recovery, and I’ll go along with that as the only thing I can’t do, that I could before the stroke is drive, as the stroke damaged my eyesight.

On the other hand, the latest therapy for stroke in the United States is B12 injections and I haven’t missed one of my three-monthly injections since 1997.

If anybody is doing serious research into B12 and stroke recovery, then I would be happy to be a lab-rat.

Coeliac Journey Through Covid-19 – Introduction

Introduction

I am coeliac and I had an interesting journey through the Covid-19 pandemic.

My experiences will be laid out in this narrative, as I believe they might be of use to someone.

I was born in 1947 and after a good education at Minchenden Grammar School in North London, I read Electrical Engineering and Electronics at Liverpool University, where in addition to getting a B. Eng degree, I met and married my late wife; Celia. We had three boys in the early seventies.

My working life was mainly spent in the solving of mathematical problems and writing software to perform complex calculations mainly in the fields of data analysis, project management, statistics and the solving of simultaneous differential equations.

The Artemis software, that I wrote in the 1970s, controlled the building of the Channel Tunnel, was the software of choice in the development of the North Sea oil and gas fields and was even used by NASA to plan the missions of the Space Shuttles and their refurbishment after each flight.

My business partners and myself sold the company to the American aerospace company; Lockheed in the 1980s.

Since then, I have been involved in various ventures.

The most successful was to back two inventors, who had developed an aerosol valve that used nitrogen as the propellant.

We sold that on to Johnson & Johnson, but the experience led to the development of the Respimat Inhaler for Boehringer Ingelheim.
