SSE Announces Construction Of Aberarder Wind Farm

The title of this post, is the same as that as an advert on my online edition of The Times.

Click the advert and you get this page, with the title of this post.

This is the sub-heading.

Aberarder secured 15-year CfD in UK Allocation Round 5

These three paragraphs give more details of the wind farm.

SSE has taken a final investment decision to proceed with Aberarder Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands, in a circa £100m investment boost for its onshore wind portfolio.

Construction of the 12 turbine, 50MW wind farm, which is wholly owned by SSE Renewables, will begin before the end of the year with completion scheduled for the end of 2026. The Aberarder project was successful in September 2023 in the UK’s fifth Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation round, securing a 15-year contract for low-carbon power generation.

Located at Strathnairn near Inverness, on a natural plateau at an average of 700m above sea level, the Aberarder project site sits directly adjacent to the operational 94MW Dunmaglass Wind Farm, which is jointly owned by SSE Renewables and Greencoat UK Wind.

It would appear that a £100m investment in the Scottish Highlands will get you a fully-operational 50 MW wind farm.

These are my observations and thoughts.

SSE’s Project Overview Of Aberarder Wind Farm

These four paragraphs are SSE’s project overview from this page on the SSE Renewables web site.

The Aberarder Wind Farm project is located in Strathnairn near Inverness, on a natural plateau at an average of 700m above sea level. It will sit directly adjacent to the operational 94MW Dunmaglass Wind Farm, which is jointly owned by SSE Renewables and Greencoat UK Wind.

The project was developed by RES and consented by The Highland Council in April 2017. The consent allows for the construction of a 12-turbine onshore wind farm, with each turbine having a maximum tip height of up to 130m and is expected to have an export capacity of 49.9MW. SSE Renewables reached an agreement with RES to acquire Aberarder in October 2022.

In September 2023 Aberarder was successful in the UK’s fifth Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round and was awarded a 15-year contract for low carbon power generation. SSE took a final investment decision to proceed with Aberarder Wind Farm, in a circa £100m investment in May 2024, construction is scheduled to begin before the end of 2024 with completion scheduled for the end of 2026.

Our focus is now on building strong and meaningful relationships with the local community surrounding the Aberarder Wind Farm. As a responsible developer and operator, we are looking forward to working closely with the community in surrounding area to fully realise the benefits of this exciting project.

Construction has now started and it would appear that in two years, the twelve-turbine wind farm will be producing power.

SSE’s Description Of Dunmaglass Wind Farm

These four paragraphs are SSE’s description from this page on the SSE Renewables web site.

Located to the south east of Inverness, on a natural plateau at an average of 700m above sea level, Dunmaglass is SSE’s highest wind farm to be constructed.

SSE acquired the project from RES in May 2013 and initial enabling works began in the summer of 2013 which included the upgrading of 11km of tracks and the construction of two timber deck bridges.

Highland contractor RJ McLeod was awarded the £16m main civil works contract in summer 2014.

Dunmaglass became fully operational in 2017.

This paragraph also illustrates the challeges of the It looks like the construction of the larger Dunmaglass wind farm.

The height at which Dunmaglass is located presented its challenges during construction and the winter months brought high winds and plenty of snow. The site was fully completed and handed to the operations team in 2017.

Surprisingly, the legendary Highland midges didn’t get a mention.

The Sale Of 49.9 % Of Dunmaglass Wind Farm To Greencoat UK Wind

This sub-heading outlines the sale.

In February 2019, SSE sold 49.9% of Dunmaglass to Greencoat UK Wind PLC as part of a deal in which Greencoat acquired a 49.9% stake in both Dunmaglass and the nearby Stronelairg wind farm.

This paragraph gives more details of the sale.

In February 2019, SSE signed agreements for the sale of 49.9% of Dunmaglass wind farm to Greencoat UK Wind Plc (“UKW”). This sale was part of a £635m deal in which Greencoat acquired a 49.9% stake in both Stronelairg and Dunmaglass wind farms. The stakes equate to 160.6MW (megawatts) of capacity, with an average valuation for the two wind farms of around £4m per MW. This valuation demonstrates SSE’s ability develop quality, low carbon assets and infrastructure vital to the GB energy market.

The interesting figure is that SSE was paid £4m per MW for the interest of 160.6 MW, that they sold.

Aberarder wind farm is a 50 MW wind farm and it appears that it will cost £100 million to build.

If after a couple of years of operation, the wind farm is worth £4 million per MW, then SSE have doubled their money.

Does this illustrate, why the professionals like SSE and Greencoat UK Wind invest in wind farms?

  • SSE would have taken the risk, that they could build the wind farm.
  • SSE have the engineering skillsto do an excellent job.
  • Greencoat UK Wind are buying into a producing asset, with a known cash flow.

SSE also get more money to build more wind farms.

Where Are Aberarder And Dunmaglass?

This Google Map shows the site of Aberarder wind farm with respect to Inverness.

Note.

  1. Inverness is at the top of the map on the waters of the Solway Firth.
  2. Aberarder wind farm is marked by the red arrow.
  3. Aberarder is a hamlet to the North-West of the wind farm.
  4. Drumnaglass is a shooting estate to the North-West of the wind farm.
  5. Loch Duntelchaig is the main reservoir for Inverness.

This second Google Map shows the Drumnaglass wind farm.

Note.

  1. Drumnaglass wind farm has 33 turbines and a capacity of 94.05 MW.
  2. There is a track network of 11 km. linking all the turbines.
  3. A good proportion of the turbines can be picked out on the map.

It would appear that Aberarder wind farm will lie to the South-East of this wind farm.

Aberarder Wind Farm To Fort Augustus

In Cloiche Onshore Wind Farm, I talked about the 130.5 MW Cloiche wind farm and its future construction to the East of Fort Augustus and Stronelairg wind farm.

This Google Map shows the position of Aberarder wind farm with respect to Ford Augustus.

Note.

  1. Loch Ness runs across the North-West corner of the map.
  2. Fort Augustus and Stronelairg wind farm, are at the Southern end of the loch.
  3. The red arrow shows Aberarder wind farm.
  4. Foyers pumped hydro is on the Eastern bank of Loch Ness, at about the same latitude as the Aberarder wind farm.
  5. The lake at the bottom of the map, to the South-East of Ford Augustus, is the Glendoe Reservoir, that powers the Glendoe hydroelectric scheme.

There are certainly, a lot of SSE-owned and/or SSE-controlled assets in the area and I wouldn’t be surprised, if SSE integrated them more closely, or added a few more wind farms.

Why Are SSE Advertising The Start Of Construction?

SSE have been advertising for some time on The Times web site.

As they are not a retail energy company anymore, as they sold their retail business to OVO, the advertising, is probably about spreading a good corporate message and getting their strategy broadcast.

Wood Burning At Home

The title of this post, is the same as that of the title on the home page of this web site.

I actually accessed the page as it appeared as an advert on something I was looking at on the Internet.

This is the sub-heading.

How do you feel about open fires, wood burners and even wood smoke?

These four paragraphs make up the home page.

It has long been known that the small particles released by solid fuel burning can stay in the air and even travel long distances. These small particles, when inhaled, can increase your risk of stroke, asthma, lung cancer, heart disease and dementia.

It is estimated that around 4,000 premature deaths occur each year in London due to long-term exposure to air pollution, of which about 284 are attributable to domestic wood burning. Every one of those 284 deaths is completely avoidable.

Domestic wood burning has a health and economic cost of about £187 million per year in London. That’s a cost of £24 for every London resident, whether you burn solid fuels or not.

The most effective way of reducing pollution and protecting everyone’s health is simply to avoid burning any wood, coal, or other solid fuels at home.

As I don’t have naked flames at all in my house, this doesn’t apply to me.

When I helped to fund two guys, who were developing a metered dose inhaler for asthma drugs, I did my due diligence before I invested.

I found some research, that said that naked flames and the oxides of nitrogen they produce, were one of the main causes of asthma.

So I avoid them and don’t do barbecues, bonfires, gas cookers or gas fires.

Incidentally, the two guys did develop the metered dose inhaler for asthma drugs and it is now prescribed as Respimat. It is totally mechanical, with no compressed gases or batteries.

Would You Buy A Battery Energy Storage System From Rolls-Royce?

I don’t often click on adverts that appear in web pages.

But I had to click on one from Rolls-Royce mtu, which advertised Battery Energy Storage Systems.

I wonder what the Honourable Charles Rolls would have thought of adverts on the Internet for the company he jointly founded?

I suspect he would have liked the idea, as Rolls was very much a promoter of motoring and aviation and opened one of the first car dealerships in the UK, according to his Wikipedia entry.

The Wikipedia entry for his business partner; Sir Henry Royce starts with this sentence.

Sir Frederick Henry Royce, 1st Baronet, OBE (27 March 1863 – 22 April 1933) was an English engineer famous for his designs of car and aeroplane engines with a reputation for reliability and longevity.

He is also described as a perfectionist.

This sentence from the Wikipedia entry, describes how he started the design of the legendary “R” engine.

In October 1928, he began design of the “R” engine while walking with some of his leading engineers on the beach at West Wittering, sketching ideas in the sand. Less than a year later, the “R” engine, designed in his studio in the village, set a new world air speed record of 357.7 miles per hour and won the Schneider Trophy of 1929.

Later with help from the maddest person my father ever met (his words, not mine!) ; Lady Houston, the Supermarine S.6B won the trophy in 1931 and then broke the world speed record at over 400 mph. Not bad for a seaplane. Take the floats off an S.6B and you almost have a Spitfire.

The Wikipedia entry also describes how the “R” engine was developed into what many engineers believe was the finest internal combustion engine of all time; the Rolls-Royce Merlin.

Following the success of the “R” engine, it was clear that they had an engine that would be of use to the Royal Air Force. As no Government assistance was forthcoming at first, in the national interest they went ahead with development of what was called the “PV-12” engine (standing for Private Venture, 12-cylinder). The idea was to produce an engine of about the same performance as the “R”, albeit with a much longer life. Rolls-Royce launched the PV-12 in October 1933 and the engine completed its first test in 1934, the year after Royce died. The PV-12 became the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.

Where would we have been in the Battle of Britain without the Merlin engine?

Since 1969, the engineers at Rolls-Royce have followed Sir Henry’s example of perfection and developed the revolutionary RB-211 into the modern day Trent, which is now about to take a big leap into a low-carbon future with the UltraFan.

If the quality of Rolls-Royce mtu’s Battery Energy Storage System matches the levels of perfection Rolls-Royce achieved with the Merlin and the Trent, then I suspect that Sir Henry would have given his approval.

This picture is shown on the web page for the Battery Energy Storage System.

These two paragraphs introduce, what Rolls-Royce mtu are calling the mtuEnergyPack.

In today’s world of economic growth and increasing populations, the demand for electricity is soaring. Governments and industries globally shift to distributed renewable energy, challenging centralized grids. To adapt to this changing energy landscape, the mtuEnergyPack offers an ideal solution.

It integrates renewable sources like solar and wind power, paving the way for future-ready sustainable power systems. The mtu EnergyPack is a scalable, all-in-one solution for autonomous off-grid facilities. It ensures reliable power through peak shaving, load-shifting, and grid stabilization, making it suitable for various applications.

These are my thoughts.

What Is The Output And The Storage Capacity?

This paragraph on this page gives this answer.

It efficiently stores electricity from distributed sources and delivers on demand. The mtu EnergyPack is available in different sizes: The QS and the QL, ranging from 200 kVA to 2,000 kVA, and from 312 kWh to 2,084 kWh, and the QG for grid scale storage needs, ranging from 4,400 kVA and 4,470 kWh to virtually any size.

It seems that you specify your requirements and Rolls-Royce mtu should be able to satisfy it.

What Devices Can Be Connected?

This paragraph on this page gives this answer.

The mtu EnergyPack serves as a key component in enhancing the reliability and profitability of microgrids and energy systems. It stores electricity generated by distributed power sources, including gensets, wind turbines, or solar panels, and delivers it when needed.

In the 1970s, when I was working at ICI, others in the section were working on a system called MEDIA, where every sensor on a chemical plant was connected to the central computer, through its own analog-to-digital computer. It would now be called plug-and-play by some.

I believe that Rolls-Royce mtu are using similar ideas to connect equipment to the control computer.

These are my thoughts about connecting various equipment.

I don’t see why every device can’t work to the same protocol.

What Is The Power Density Like?

This paragraph on this page gives this answer.

The mtu EnergyPack’s compact battery system designs suit projects with limited space and logistical restrictions.

In ‘Spirit of Innovation’ Stakes Claim To Be The World’s Fastest All-Electric Vehicle, I talked about Rolls-Royce’s record-breaking electric plane called Spirit of Innovation.

Has what has been learned about energy storage in the confined spaces of an aeroplane been applied to a Battery Energy Storage System?

What Do Rolls-Royce mtu Consider To Be Important Features?

On this page, they list these features.

  • Power Density
  • Digitally Connected
  • Multilevel Safety
  • Black Start Capability
  • Scalability
  • Ultra-Fast Response
  • Flexible Use
  • Plug-And-Play Installation

The design seems to have everything covered.

Can Similar Systems Be Designed By Others?

I would expect that similar systems can be designed, as technology like batteries is available to all and the operation is only as good as the software controlling the various components of the system.

But similar systems will be without the famous Rolls-Royce logo.

Could One Of These Systems Decarbonise A Village?

I once lived in a village with about fifty houses and perhaps a hundred inhabitants.

I suspect an mtuEnergyPack could control all these inputs and provide the village with the following.

  • Enough electricity to power all the needs of the inhabitants, businesses and their vehicles.
  • If an electrolyser were to be provided, it could probably produce enough hydrogen to power every boiler and hydrogen-powered vehicle.

Note.

  1. Farmers would like the local availability of hydrogen, as it will be ideal for tractors and agricultural machinery.
  2. I actually believe that if a village had a reliable and affordable hydrogen supply, that a large proportion of the inhabitants would switch to hydrogen-powered vehicles.

There would still be the National Grid there for backup.

Conclusion

If I needed an mtuEnergyPack, I’d certainly give one a close look.

Trying To Watch The Rugby World Cup, But All I Get Is Adverts

At least I could watch the athletics on the BBC, whilst waiting for the match to start.

As all matches would appear to be on ITV, I doubt I’ll be watching many of the matches.

Why Can’t More Bags Be Like This?

I recently had my shoes fixed in Timpsons.

This was the bag that the company gave me with the shoes

Surely, paper bags score highly in many ways; practicality, affordability, recyclability and as advertising.

Why don’t we see bags like these more often?

More Train Companies Are Advertising Now

At the end of October, I posted Hull Trains Are Mounting A Big Advertising Campaign.

Today LNER are also advertising in The Times and these follow other companies like Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, Grand Central and Great Western Railway.

It looks like the Hull Trains campaign must have been successful.

Hull Trains Are Mounting A Big Advertising Campaign

The adverts, unlike some, are not annoying, but Hull Trains are certainly paying for a lot of adverts to be shown in web sites like The Times.

I know from my post entitled Hull Trains Is Back And Stronger Than Ever, that they are feeling bullish about the future, but I can’t remember a train company advertising on the web as much as this.

COP26 And Lumo Branding At King’s Cross Station

I took these pictures as I passed through King’s Cross station today.

Note.

  1. Wilston Samuel Jackson was the first black train driver in the UK.
  2. Lumo seem to have taken over all of the branding at the station.

There was a generally upbeat atmosphere at the station.

Could London’s New Routemaster Buses Be Converted To Hydrogen Power?

There are a thousand New Routemaster buses on the roads of London.

This paragraph from  Wikipedia describes the transmission.

The bus is a hybrid diesel-electric driven by a battery-powered electric motor, charged by a diesel fuelled generator and recovering energy during braking by regenerative braking.

Note.

  1. The Cummins diesel engine is under the back stairs and is mounted high up. You can sometimes hear it start and stop if you sit or stand at the back of the bus.
  2. The diesel engine is part of the Cummins B Series Engine family, which is used very widely, included in vehicles like the Dodge Ram pick-up.
  3. The battery is mounted under the front stairs.

Cummins are embracing hydrogen in a big way and bought hydrogen company; Hydrogenics in 2019.

This press release from Cummins is entitled Cummins Begins Testing Of Hydrogen Fueled Internal Combustion Engine.

This is the first paragraph.

Cummins has taken another step forward in advancing zero carbon technology as the company began testing a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine. The proof-of-concept test is building on Cummins’ existing technology leadership in gaseous-fuel applications and powertrain leadership to create new power solutions that help customers meet the energy and environmental needs of the future.

Only today in Deutz Hydrogen Engine Ready For Market, I reported on how Deutz were going down a similar route.

I have done consultancy work for Cummins in Darlington, where I suspect the New Routemaster engines were built and the company prides itself in being able to provide a specially-laid out diesel engine for a niche-market application.

If they develop a hydrogen replacement for the B Series engine, I suspect that they will adopt the same sales philosophy.

For a start, it would enable all their many existing customers to convert their products from diesel to hydrogen power.

A hydrogen engine would be a direct way to enable conversion of a New Routemaster to hydrogen.

  • The new hydrogen engine and generator would just replace the current diesel engine and generator.
  • The chassis, body, battery and traction motor could be retained.
  • I am also sure, that Wrightbus have the expertise to squeeze a hydrogen tank in somewhere.

.I believe that in a few years Cummins will be able to replace the diesel engine with a hydrogen engine of equivalent size and power.

After Ricardo announced their fuel cell approach to convert modern diesel buses to hydrogen, which I wrote about in Ricardo To Engineer Zero Emission Buses For UK’s First Hydrogen Transport Hub, I am sure we’re going to see thousands of modern buses converted to hydrogen power.

Conclusion

I believe from my knowledge of Cummins and the way they work, that they will come up with a hydrogen-based solution, that will replace the Cummins diesel in these buses with a zero-carbon engine.

If Cummins don’t then someone else will.

Whoever solves the problem of converting London’s new Routemasters to hydrogen will have one of the best adverts for their product, there has ever been.

After converting London’s thousand Routemasters, the engineers could move on to anything powered by a Cummins engine.
