European Commission To Support 10 Cross-Border Inter-City Pilot Services

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Railway Gazette.

This is the introductory paragraph, after a comprehensive map.

The European Commission has announced that it will support 10 pilot projects for new or improved cross-border passenger services.

The ten services are.

  1. Day train – Reducing Budapest – Wien journey times and providing new or enhanced services from Budapest to Arad and Oradea in Romania.
  2. Day and Night trains – Germany – Denmark – Sweden services.
  3. Night train – Midnight Trains, new night train service Paris – Milano – Venezia.
  4. Day train – Flixtrain, new service München– Zürich.
  5. Day train – Westbahn, new service München – Wien – Budapest.
  6. Day train – NS, enhancement of the existing Amsterdam – London service
  7. Night train – European Sleeper, new night train service Amsterdam – Barcelona.
  8. Day train – FS and DB, new services from Roma and Milano to München.
  9. Day train – ILSA, new services linking Lisboa with A Coruña and Madrid.
  10. Day train – FGC, new cross-border services connecting Barcelona and Catalunya with Figueras, Montpellier and Toulouse in France.

The services are in order of start date and are expected to be completed by 2029.

Note.

  1. From my experience, they certainly fill in some big gaps.
  2. Travel to Portugal and Romania by train will be much easier.
  3. Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest and Munich, which are all worth a visit or an overnight stop in their own right, will become important hubs.
  4. The sleepers will allow long overnight jumps.

It is a good start.

Onward To Ukraine

I believe that after Vlad the Mad is put back in his box, Ukraine will see a lot of increase in passenger and freight traffic.

Good services to Budapest could be the start of a trip to Ukraine.

Rail Baltica

We mustn’t forget Rail Baltica, which is already being built to link Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.

Coeliacs And Migraines

Yesterday, I watched BBC Morning Live about migraines.

I used to suffer from migraine-like symptoms, especially, if I was in a room with small tungsten downlights. One real tennis court at Cambridge caused them and the other didn’t, as the lights were different.

In 1997, I was diagnosed as a coeliac and went gluten-free.

I’ve not had the symptoms since!

I also stopped nail-biting, which I’d done since I was about five. Incidentally, I’ve had others tell me, they stopped nail-biting after being diagnosed as a coeliac and going gluten-free.

On the program, the doctor has just said that women have a 1-in-5 chance of having a migraine, whereas with men it’s 1-in-15.

The NHS web site says this about who’s affected by coeliac disease.

Coeliac disease is a condition that affects at least 1 in every 100 people in the UK.

But some experts think this may be underestimated because milder cases may go undiagnosed or be misdiagnosed as other digestive conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Reported cases of coeliac disease are around 3 times higher in women than men.

MPS Floating Platform To Feature FibreMax Tendons

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

This is the sub-heading.

Welsh company Marine Power Systems (MPS) has joined forces with FibreMax to provide integrated floating foundation and tendon solutions to the growing floating offshore wind sector.

And these three paragraphs outline the design.

The tendon solution will be used in the anchoring and moorings of MPS’ tension leg platform (TLP), called PelaFlex, to deliver the highest system stability and zero tilt, the partners said.

It will be the “world’s first” TLP with FibreMax tendons, made with Twaron fiber from Japan-headquartered Teijin.

Compared to traditional steel moorings synthetic cable offers a much better strength-to-weight ratio, longer operational life, and lower levels of maintenance, according to the partners.

  5. The press release for the joint Simply Blue/MPS project talks of six turbines totalling up to 100 MW, which is probably around 17 MW per wind turbine.

It looks to me, that the PelaFlex design is getting better by the simple process of adding lightness and therefore being able to have a higher energy density in a deep area of the sea.

The amount of innovation involved probably makes PelaFlex an ideal component for the upcoming INTOG leasing round.

ITM Signs 200MW Electrolyser Deal

Agreements with Linde Engineering will be for installation at RWE’s GET H2 Nukleus project in Germany

These paragraphs outline the deal.

ITM Power has signed two contracts for electrolysers, totalling 200MW, which will be installed in green hydrogen plants in Germany that will be supplied by North Sea offshore wind.

The contracts, both with Linde Engineering, are each for 100MW of PEM electrolysers.

The machines will be installed at two plants operated by RWE in Lingen, Germany.

Note.

  1. Linde Engineering and ITM Power were preselected by RWE for these orders.
  2. ITM Power seem to be going through scale-up problems.

But the comments in the article and the orders, surely show that ITM Power is now more likely to recover.

Centrica Announces Hydrogen Ready Combined Heat And Power Partnership With 2G

The title if this post is the same as that of this press release from centrica.

This is the sub-heading.

Centrica Business Solutions is partnering with 2G Energy AG to provide customers with 100% hydrogen ready Combined and Heat Power (CHP) systems.

This paragraph outlines the project.

The move is in response to the growing need for integrated hydrogen solutions which are a key tool in the decarbonisation of decentralised energy. As the hydrogen network develops, the highly efficient units can continue to run on traditional fuel sources, helping future proof investments by ensuring an extended life for the assets.

It does appear that the 2G units can run on biogas or natural gas and switch to hydrogen, when it is available.

2G Energy have a web site, with lots of case studies.

Northern Line Could Be Extended To Clapham Junction In Regeneration Plans

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the South London Press.

These three paragraphs outline the story.

Clapham Junction could be set for a huge overhaul as a council is set to investigate whether the Northern line should be extended to the busy railway station.

Wandsworth council has revealed a masterplan for Clapham Junction and the surrounding areas, including the Winstanley and York Road estate.

The overhaul hopes to create new homes, offices and shops for the area, and also promises a probe into whether extending the Northern line to Clapham Junction would make sense.

This has always been in the plans for the Northern Line and the route is safeguarded.

Extending The Elizabeth Line – Connection To Southeastern High Speed One Services

The Two Stratford Stations

In this post, Stratford station is the station handling Greater Anglia and London Overground, Underground and Docklands Light Railway services, with Stratford International station handles High Speed services.

The Elizabeth Line And The Great Western Railway Services

One of the most important stations on the Elizabeth Line is Paddington, where it connects to the London terminus of the Great Western Railway.

I would expect that quite a few passengers going to the West and Wales on the Great Western Railway, will be transported to Paddington by the Elizabeth Line.

The Elizabeth Line And Greater Anglia Services

Another of the important stations on the Elizabeth Line is Liverpool Street, where the station is the London terminus of the Greater Anglia.

I would expect that quite a few passengers going to East Anglia on the Greater Anglia, will be transported to Liverpool Street by the Elizabeth Line.

Southeastern High Speed One Services

Southeastern runs some High Speed services  on High Speed One to provide Kent with an improved service to London.

Current services are

  • London St Pancras International to Ramsgate via Faversham.
  • London St Pancras International to Ramsgate via Dover Priory.
  • London St Pancras International to Margate via Canterbury West.

Note

  1. All trains are one train per hour (tph).
  2. All trains stop at Stratford International and Ebbsfleet International.
  3. All trains are run by 140 mph Class 395 trains.

There has also been talk of running a fourth service to Hastings and Eastbourne via Stratford International, Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International.

St. Pancras Station

All of these trains terminate in three platforms; 11 to 13 at St. Pancras International station.

St. Pancras is not the ideal terminal for the Southeastern High Speed services.

  • St. Pancras is not on the Elizabeth Line.
  • St.Pancras doesn’t have good connections to Heathrow.
  • All connections to the Underground are a long walk.
  • Eurostar services are a longer walk.
  • East Midland services are also a longer route, with stairs and escalators for good measure.

St. Pancras station was designed by a committee, as a museum to Victorian architecture, rather than as a working station.

Ebbsfleet International Station Must Be The Largest Parkway Station In The UK

It holds nearly five thousand cars and it is served by Southeastern High Speed Services.

Thanet Parkway Station Will Open This Year

Thanet Parkway station is under construction.

  • It will have nearly three hundred parking spaces.
  • It will be served by Southeastern High Speed Services.
  • It should open in May 2023.

This station will need a good connection to London.

Could An Interchange Between The Elizabeth Line And Southeastern High Speed Services Be Provided At Stratford?

Such an alternative interchange would be popular with passengers.

  • The Elizabeth Line from Stratford currently serves the West End, the Northern section of the City of London, East London, Liverpool Street, Paddington and the West End directly.
  • The Elizabeth Line from Stratford currently serves Canary Wharf, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Euston, Heathrow, King’s Cross. Reading, St. Pancras and Victoria with a change at Whitechapel.
  • The Central Line, which shares platforms with the Elizabeth Line  serves Bank and the West End directly.
  • The Overground is easily accessed for travel across North London to Richmond.
  • The Jubilee Line is easily accessed for travel to London Bridge, Waterloo and Westminster.

It would be connected to two large parkway stations and lots of parking all over Kent.

I believe that Stratford must be promoted as an alternative terminus for Southeastern High Speed Services.

Today, I walked both ways between two Stratford stations.

These pictures show the route I took between Stratford and Stratford International stations, through the Eastfield Shopping Centre.

Note.

  1. I went through the Shopping Centre.
  2. I passed Marks & Spencer’s large food hall, excellent toilets and a Food Court.
  3. By the Food Court is an exit that leads to an entrance to Stratford International station.
  4. The walk took about 10 minutes.
  5. It was vaguely level.
  6. Lifts by-passed the escalators.
  7. One thing that makes the journey to London easier, is to travel in the Eastern end of the train, as the lifts and escalators at Stratford International station, are at that end.

It does need some better signage, but they were doing a bit of refurbishment, so that may already be underway.

It could be a very high quality interchange and it is already better than St. Pancras.

Coming back I took the longer route outside the Shopping Centre.

Note.

  1. I just turned left out of the entrance, walked along the road and turned right past the bus station.
  2. If the weather had been colder or wetter, I’d have gone back via the Shopping Centre.
  3. The walk took about 12 minutes.

I think normally, I’d go back through the Shopping Centre, as there’s a Marks and Spencer Food Hall on the route and it’s slightly quicker and often warmer.

 

Could Stratford Station Be A London Superhub Station?

When you consider the stations connected to Stratford in London, East Anglia and Kent, it has an excellent collection.

  • Airports – Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Southend and Stansted
  • Cities – Cambridge, Canterbury, Chelmsford, Colchester, Ipswich, Norwich and Southend-on-Sea
  • London Main and Terminal Stations – Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Clapham Junction, Euston, Farringdon, King’s Cross, London Bridge, Liverpool Street, Marylebone, Moorgate, Paddington, Victoria and Waterloo
  • Major Areas – Canary Wharf, City of London, Hampstead, Olympic Park and West End
  • Ports – Dover, Felixstowe, Folkestone and Harwich

You can even get a train to Slough, with a change at Whitechapel.

I would think it already is a London Superhub Station.

Containerised Coal Overcomes The Break-Of-Gauge

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the Railway Gazette.

Innofreight containers are being transferred from broad to standard gauge trains as part of a through journey for the first time.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has forced Poland to seek alternatives to Russian coal, but Polish ports have limited capacity to handle the required volumes.

As a result, coal is being imported via the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda. LTG Cargo’s 1 520 mm gauge trains are loaded with 60 Innofreight MonTainer XXL bulk goods containers of coal for transport to Kaunas or Šeštokai, where the containers are transferred to 15 standard gauge InnoWagons for onward transport to Braniewo in Poland.

It sounds like a simple solution, with advantages.

Innofreight says that this is faster than discharging the coal from one train and reloading it onto another, and also avoids creating dust.

On their home page, Innofreight describe themselves like this.

The focus of our corporate activity is the development of innovative wagons, containers and unloading systems for and in cooperation with our customers.

Certainly after the war in Ukraine is finished, there should be a large market for dual-gauge systems like that being used to get coal to Poland.

World’s First Semi-Submersible Floating Offshore Wind Farm Exceeds Expectations

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on offshoreWIND.biz.

The article is based on this news item from WindFloat Atlantic, which is entitled WindFloat Atlantic Closes 2022, Reaching 78GWh.

These are the first three paragraphs of the news item.

WindFloat Atlantic, world’s first semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm, that was connected to the grid by the end of 2019 and commissioned in 2020, now finishes its full second year in operation.

After nearly 2 years and a half in fully operation, WindFloat Atlantic closes 2022 with an electricity production of 78GWh (+5% more than its first year). This production enables the supply of green energy to more than 25,000 households, as well as the avoidance of 33,000 tones of CO2.

These favourable data show Portugal’s potential on offshore wind energy, which is reflected in the annual availability of the wind farm, which was between 93-94%, as well as showing the success of WindFloat Atlantic’s innovative technology, being a benchmark within the offshore sector.

These points are from the news item.

  • The wind farm is only 25 MW. So it is only a small wind farm.
  • There were no lost time accidents in the last year of operation.
  • It produced more electricity in 2022 than 2021.
  • I have calculated the capacity factor at 36 %.

It certainly looks to be a successful application of floating wind power.

Could The Giant Station At Bank, Liverpool Street, Monument And Moorgate Be Considered A Superhub?

In Is The City Of London Moving Towards One Giant Station?, I showed how the four stations were being drawn together and developed as one large station that served the heart of the City of London.

London is also developing other large interchange stations that could claim because of their connectivity could be classed as London superhub stations.

  • Canary Wharf stations, which connect the Elizabeth and Jubilee Lines, and the Docklands Light Railway.
  • Old Oak Common station, which could bring together the Central, Chiltern and Elizabeth Lines, the London Overground and High Speed Two.
  • Stratford station, which connects the Central, Elizabeth and Jubilee Lines, the Docklands Light Railway, the London Overground, High Speed One and the Great Eastern Main Line.
  • Whitechapel station, which connects the Circle, District, Elizabeth and Hammersmith & City Lines, and the London Overground.

But what are the  characteristics of a superhub station?

A Lot Of Lines And Services

Obviously, it must have a lot of lines and services, so perhaps Clapham Junction station is the original superhub station.

All Lines Should Have Step-Free Access

This surely, goes without saying.

There Should Be Lots of Information

If the station is large it needs a lot of information and there’s probably the space to put it.

Helpful Staff

Should we have a fully-staffed kiosk at superhub stations, as there are at some main line stations?

Good Bus Connections

Bus connections at a superhub station must be comprehensive and probably connect to other superhubs.

There Should Be A Selection Of Shops For Travellers

I do my daily food and other shopping, as I travel around London. I’ll often use a station like Paddington with a good selection of shops.

Toilets

There are not enough public toilets in London.

Cash Machines

I know we’re using less cash, but a large station is a secure place to put a cash-machine.

Works Of Art

I also believe that railway stations are a secure place to put some of those large bronze sculptures and other works of art, that are currently locked away in the storerooms of galleries.
