Taking Pictures In Doncaster And Cleethorpes Today

My faith was restored a bit in UK railways today.

I had to go to Cleethorpes at the last minute to take some pictures for this blog.

I went with a change at Doncaster each way.

 

  • I bought the single ticket to Doncaster from a person in King’s Cross for £28.55 on LNER.
  • I bought the return ticket to Cleethorpes from a person in Doncaster for £20.55 on TransPennine Express.
  • I bought the single ticket to King’s Cross from a person in Doncaster for £15.30 on Hull Trains.

I bought all tickets with my railcard on a walk up basis.

All four trains were on time.

The only problem was the weather in Cleethorpes and the pictures could have been better.

From Doncaster To Cleethorpes

These pictures were taken on my journey between Doncaster and Cleethorpes.

The area is best summed up as flat and decorated with these features.

  • A few hedges.
  • Some trees and some woodland.
  • dozens of wind turbines.
  • Lots of pylons carrying electricity.
  • Scunthorpe steelworks
  • A few stations and railway sidings.
  • A couple of waterways.
  • Estates of new housing as you approach Grimsby.

When I returned there was more of the same on the other side of the tracks.

With the addition of all the power stations at Keadby and a couple of wind farms.

These are my thoughts on how this landscape will look at some time after 2030.

More Onshore Wind Farms

There will be a lot more wind farms lining the Doncaster and Cleethorpes railway.

The government has said it might pay for turbines and transmission lines to spoil views.

I feel they will have to, to meet their net-zero targets.

There Will Be Massive Hydrogen Storage On The Other Side Of The Humber

SSE are developing Albrough and Centrica are developing Rough into two of the largest hydrogen stores in the world.

The wind farms of the North Sea will provide them with hydrogen.

More Housing

If the government has its wish there will be a lot more new housing.

And as the newer houses show in my pictures, many of them will have solar panels.

More Power Stations At Keadby

Consider.

  • The main purpose of the power stations at Keadby will be to provide backup to the wind and solar power in the area and far out to sea.
  • The power stations will use hydrogen stored at Albrough and Rough.
  • Some of the gas-fired power stations at Keadby will be fitted with carbon capture.
  • One hydrogen-fired power station is already being planned.

The power stations at Keadby will probably be capable of supplying several GW of zero-carbon energy.

There Will Be Energy-Hungry Industries Along The South Bank Of The Humber

Just as in the Victorian era, coal attracted steel-making, chemicals and refining to the area, a South Humberside with large amounts of energy will attract heavy industry again.

Already, Siemens have built a train factory at Goole.

There Will Also Be Large Greenhouses In Lincolnshire

Greenhouses are a wonderful green way of absorbing waste heat and carbon dioxide.

Where Have I Seen This Blend Of Offshore Energy, Hydrogen, Heavy Industry And Agriculture Before?

After I visited Eemshaven in the Northern Netherlands, I wrote The Dutch Plan For Hydrogen.

We are not doing something similar, but something much bigger, based on the hydrogen stores at Aldbrough and Brough, the massive offshore wind farms and Lincolnshire’s traditional heavy industry and agriculture.

The Railway Between Doncaster and Cleethorpes Will Be Developed

Just as the Dutch have developed the railways between Groningen and Eemshaven.

Grand Central To Submit Application For Direct Services Between Lincolnshire And London

The title of this post, is the same as that of this news item from Grand Central.

These three bullet points act as sub-headings.

  • Grand Central has today launched an application process for direct services between  Cleethorpes, Grimsby, Habrough, Scunthorpe and London – plans to bring significant benefits to underserved areas. 
  • The application will be welcomed by communities, businesses, and organisations, who have been actively campaigning for the introduction of direct rail links to London.
  • If approved, the new services could unlock £30.1 million annually for the region.

These three paragraphs add more details.

Grand Central has today notified Network Rail of its plans to operate new direct services between Lincolnshire and London that, if approved by the rail regulator (the ORR), will bring significant benefits to underserved areas across Lincolnshire and the wider region.

Under the proposals, direct services to London will be provided from Cleethorpes, Grimsby, Habrough, and Scunthorpe, with Grand Central planning to operate the services from as early as December 2026.

The plan makes best use of capacity on the rail network by running trains from the proposed new stops before connecting into existing Grand Central services at Doncaster.

The service seems very similar to the proposed King’s Cross and Cleethorpes service described in the this section of the  Grand Central Wikipedia entry, where this is said.

In December 2017, Grand Central announced plans to bid for a service from London King’s Cross to Cleethorpes in early 2018 for a date in 2020. It would involve the existing Bradford Interchange service extended to ten coaches from London to Doncaster then dividing with five coaches going to Cleethorpes via Scunthorpe, Barnetby, Habrough and Grimsby. The other five coaches would be the existing service to Bradford Interchange. This proposal would require permission for a split of trains as it has not been used on the East Coast Main Line before. In February 2018, Grand Central announced plans for an additional call at Crow The company planned to operate four trains per day from 2020. However, in July 2018, the Office of Rail and Road announced new access charges which would affect the business case for the new service, leading to Grand Central announcing that it would delay bidding until 2019.

Note.

  1. It appears that the service is not calling at Crow.
  2. By splitting and joining at Doncaster, Grand Central will be getting more coaches and passengers, up and down a single path between King’s Cross and Doncaster stations.
  3. Grand Central run four trains per day (tpd) between King’s Cross and Bradford Interchange, so as four tpd will be running between King’s Cross and Doncaster stations, it appears Grand Central will be running a full service.

It appears that open access applications come to those who wait eight years.

I have some further thoughts.

What Class Of Trains Do Grand Central Currently Use?

According to Real Time Trains on Friday the 21st of March 2025, two Class 180 trains and two Class 221 trains each ran a service between King’s Cross and Bradford Interchange stations.

Both type of train appear to be able to run as a pair of trains.

As Bradford is the UK City of Culture in 2025, that could prove useful.

What Trains Will Grand Central Use For The New Service?

It would appear that either type of train type could run the service,

So it would probably come down to factors like reliability, comfort and what is available.

I Was Mildly Surprised When I Saw This Application Had Gone In

But, circumstances change.

  • Grand Central now run two Class 221 trains, in addition to the Class 180 trains.
  • There are more Class 221 trains in store, if needed.
  • The UK has had several changes of government since the original application in 2017 and track-access charges may have been reduced.
  • Cleethorpes station has been refurbished.

Cleethorpes Station – 28th June 2023 shows the station in 2023.

But a new problem has arisen. The new Transport Secretary doesn’t seem keen on open access services, from some of the things she’s said.

Perhaps, she has had a change of heart or as she looks to be a good doer, someone has bought her a decent meal of fish and chips in Cleethorpes? My meal in the town is described in Lunch On The Pier In Cleethorpes.

But would Grand Central put in an application, if they knew they were wasting their money?

Or could this be an application funded by all the open access operators to get a definitive view on the government’s policy?

Could The Cleethorpes Service Be Run By Battery-Electric Trains?

Consider.

  • Doncaster and Cleethorpes are 52.1 miles apart.
  • Surprisingly Doncaster and Bradford Interchange are 52.1 miles apart.
  • King’s Cross and Doncaster are 155.9 miles apart and fully-electrified.
  • A battery that had enough capacity to do the return trips from Doncaster to either Cleethorpes or Bradford Interchange, would be easily recharged on the way to and from London.

With careful calculation of the battery size and good capacity management, I also suspect a battery-electric train could be able to take the GNGE Diversion via Lincoln.

Could The Cleethorpes Service Be Run By Hydrogen-Electric Trains?

Consider the daily services will be made up of these runs.

  • Eight runs between London and Bradford Interchange each consisting of  155.9 miles on wires and 52.1 miles on hydrogen.
  • Eight runs between London and Cleethorpes each consisting of  155.9 miles on wires and 52.1 miles on hydrogen.

Which means there are 833.6 miles per day run on hydrogen.

If there are four trains running the service as now, that is 208.4 miles per train per day on hydrogen.

A hydrogen-powered train with this daily range is very much a possibility.

The German Dimension To Grand Central Trains

Consider.

  • Grand Central are owned by Arriva.
  • Arriva are owned by Deutche Bahn.
  • Siemens have a train factory at Goole close to Doncaster.
  • Siemens have built quite a few electric multiple units for various UK railways.
  • Siemens have designs for battery-electric and hydrogen-electric multiple units, that would be suitable for Grand Central Trains.
  • Jürgen Maier was senior in Siemens UK, when the train factory at Goole was built and is now chair of Great British Energy.

I believe that Siemens at Goole could build trains, that would do nicely for Grand Central Trains.

  • It would surely be handy for Grand Central Trains to have their fleet stabled in easy reach of the factory.
  • In addition, hydrogen will soon be readily-available in the Doncaster area.

Grand Central trains could do a lot worse than buy trains built or assembled at Siemen’s factory at Goole.

Extending The Sheffield Tram-Train To Adwick

I must admit, I very much like the Class 399 tram-trains in Sheffield and their German cousins in Karlsruhe.

I am not alone, as talking to an experienced Sheffield tram driver, he said that the extra power of the Class 399 tram-trains have over the Supertrams, mean they handle Sheffield’s hills with ease, when the tram-trains are full.

They have a top speed of 62 mph compared to a British Rail Class 150 train being able to manage 75 mph.

Passenger capacity of the two trains is probably about the same.

The Current Tram-Train Service

The service has the following characteristics.

  • This runs between Sheffield Cathedral and Rotherham Parkgate via Meadowhall South and Rotherham Central stations.
  • Services run every thirty minutes.
  • I have heard rumours that an extra stop is going to be be added at Magna Science Adventure Centre.

London Overground and local rail services in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and other cities in the UK, seem to run at a frequency of four trains per hour (tph).

The Current Northern Rail Service Between Sheffield And Adwick Via Doncaster

The service has the following characteristics.

  • This runs between Sheffield and Aswick stations via Meadowhall, Rotherham Central, Swinton, Mexborough, Conisbrough, Doncaster and Bentley stations.
  • Services run every hour.
  • The service passes Rotherham Parkway Shopping Centre, but doesn’t stop.

Is there a need for this Northern Rail service to stop at Rotherham Parkway Shopping Centre?

The Current Electrification Between Sheffield And Rotherham

This OpenRailwayMap shows the electrified lines between Sheffield and Rotherham Parkway.

Note.

  1. Mauve tracks are electrified with 750 VDC overhead wires, so they can power Sheffield’s trams and tram-trains directly.
  2. Black tracks are not electrified.
  3. Meadowhall and its rail and tram interchange is in the South-West corner of the map.
  4. Note how mauve lines indicate the electrified tram tracks, that curve round the Meadowhall Shopping Centre.
  5. The blue arrow in the North-East corner indicates Rotherham Parkgate tram stop.
  6. The mauve line diagonally across the map, indicates the current electrification between Meadowhall South and Rotherham Parkgate tram stops.
  7. Magna Science Adventure Centre, is just to the South of the electrified Sheffield-Rotherham tram-line.

Note.

  1. Track colours are as in the first map.
  2. The blue arrow in the North-East corner of the map indicates Holmes junction and is the route that Northern Rail’s current Sheffield and Adwick service takes.
  3. Sheffield and Rotherham Central stations are 6.1 miles apart.
  4. Sheffield and Adwick stations are 22.7 miles apart, but the Northern four miles between Doncaster and Adwick are electrified with 25 KVAC overhead wires.

This would indicate that a tram-train with a range of about twenty miles on battery power would be able to handle the route, if it could charge its batteries on the electrified lines.

Terminating a Sheffield And Adwick Service In Sheffield

This OpenRailwayMap shows the rail and tram lines in and through Sheffield station.

Note.

  1. Rail lines are in orange.
  2. Tram lines are in mauve.
  3. Platform numbers in Sheffield station are shown as blue dots. Click on the map to show it on a larger scale.
  4. Sheffield Cathedral tram stop is in the North-West corner of the map.
  5. The triangular junction in the North-East corner of the map, allows trams to use all the main tram lines that go in three directions. A touch of genius as it gives a lot of flexibility, when adding extra services.

Currently, termination of the services from Rotherham and Doncaster is as follows.

  • The tram-train terminates at the Sheffield Cathedral tram stop with a frequency of two tph.
  • The train terminates in Platform 3 in Sheffield station with an hourly frequency.
  • As typically a terminal platform can handle 4 tph, I don’t see why a second Sheffield and Adwick service can’t be running every hour into Sheffield station.

A short length of overhead electrification would need to be added on Platform 3 to recharge any tram-trains terminating in the platform.

It could also become a tram and run to any of the other destinations served from the triangular junction; Halfway, Herdings Park or Malin Bridge. This would allow batteries to be charged as the tram-trains ran across the city.

Remember,  Sheffield station is likely to be electrified with 25 KVAC  overhead wires in connection with running electric trains between London St. Pancras and Sheffield.

If the four bay platforms at Sheffield station, were to be electrified, then these would be ideal for recharging any battery-electric trains or tram-trains, that terminated in the station.

Battery-Electric Trains Between Manchester And Sheffield

Consider.

  • Manchester Piccadilly station is already fully electrified.
  • Currently, all Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield, terminate in Platform 8 at Sheffield station.
  • The distance between the electrification at Manchester Piccadilly and Platform 8 at Sheffield station is 40.2 miles.
  • CAF are promising battery-electric versions of their Class 331 trains.

With a battery range of fifty miles, which is not outrageous, Manchester and Sheffield could be an electric service for the first time since January 1970, when the Woodhead route was closed.

FirstGroup’s Proposed  London King’s Cross And Sheffield Service

This open access service might happen, although with this Government of all the Lawyers we have, who can predict anything.

  • If it does happen, it is likely that the trains will be battery-electric Class 802 trains.
  • These will be the same as those that will be run by Hull Trains.
  • Battery range will be sufficient to handle Retford and Sheffield, which is 23.3 miles and much shorter than Temple Hirst junction and Beverley.

These trains will also need charging at Sheffield.

 

 

 

 

 

The current Sheffield and Adwick service terminates in platform 3 at Sheffield station, so this platform would probably need to have tramway electrification, so that it could charge the trams.

Updating Rotherham Parkgate Tram Stop

My preference would be for four tph passing through Rotherham Parkgate tram stop in both directions, so this would be a tram-train every seven minutes and thirty seconds, if there was only one platform as now.

I’m fairly sure, that Rotherham Parkgate tram stop needs to have a platform in both directions.

Note.

I am pretty certain, that a two-platform station could be squeezed in.

Extra Luggage Racks For Lumo

The title of this post, is the same as a small article in the November 2023 Edition of Modern Railways.

Thiese are the first two paragraphs.

Lumo is to remove eight seats from each of its five Class 803 EMUs to make way for additional luggage racks.

Two seats will be removed from four of the five vehicles in each unit to make space for the luggage racks. The move has required a variation of Lumo’s track access agreement, with the Office of Road and Rail, which as originally approved specified that each train must have 400 seats.

The article also states that Lumo has stopped carrying bikes and the bike areas are now used for luggage.

Batteries For Lumo?

The article finishes with this paragraph.

Lumo celebrated its second birthday in late October and was also set to mark the carriage of its two-millionth passenger. It is understood Lumo is interested in augmenting its fleet, such has been the success of the service; while many operators favour bi-mode units, Lumo is proud of its all-electric credentials so straight EMUs are still preferred, although the possibilities of including batteries which could power the trains may be pursued (the ‘803s’ have on-board batteries, but only to provide power to on-board systems if the electricity supply fails).

I find this development very interesting.

As an electrical engineer, I’ve always believed that the emergency batteries in the Class 803 trains are very similar to the traction batteries that Hitachi are developing for the Class 802 trains.

  • One design of battery must surely save time and costs in design and testing.
  • The difference between the two batteries might be only software and the total capacity of the lithium-ion cells.
  • In service testing under real operating conditions can be carried out in Lumo’s Class 803 trains.
  • Traction and emergency batteries would be interchangeable, so some operators, who didn’t always need traction but wanted emergency on-board power could be setup as required for the route.

If traction batteries gave the train a range of perhaps 15-20 miles, this might well be enough range, for the train to get through or to the next station, if there was to be an incident like catenary failure or a derailed freight train blocking the line. Obviously, Lumo will have records of all external failures that have affected them.

Consider.

  • I have calculated that Peterborough and Doncaster via Lincoln is 88.5 miles.
  • I also believe it is likely that in the future, there may be some electrification at Lincoln to charge battery-electric trains.
  • Lincolnshire is flat.

Would it be possible for Lumo trains to use a single traction battery to take the Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Line to get round engineering works on the East Coast Main Line?

What Length Of Trains Could Lumo Run?

In Ten-Car Hull Trains, I talked about Hull Trains running ten-car trains to Hull.

I would expect that all Lumo’s stops are possible with ten-car trains.

As the trains are all Plug-and-Play, Lumo could either run pairs of trains or perhaps lengthen all trains to any size between six and nine cars.

Could Lumo Piggy-Back An Aberdeen Service On An Edinburgh Train?

The line between Edinburgh and Ladybank is being electrified and Ladybank is just 91.4 miles South of Aberdeen.

  • A pair of Class 803 trains could leave King’s Cross running as a ten-car formation.
  • The leading train would be a Class 803 train equipped with a traction battery.
  • The trailing train would be a Class 803 train equipped with the normal emergency battery.
  • Aberdeen passengers would get in the leading train.
  • The train would run as normal to Edinburgh.
  • At Edinburgh the two trains would split with the leading train going on to Aberdeen and the trailing train getting ready to return to London.

The train going to Aberdeen would need sufficient battery range to cover the 91.4 miles to Aberdeen, where it would recharge to make the journey back to Ladybank, Edinburgh and the South.

What About Inverness?

Dunblane is the nearest electrified station to Inverness, but it is 146.2 miles away over a route with lots of steep climbs.

I doubt that a battery-electric train could handle that route.

Conclusions

Luggage seems to be getting more of a problem on trains and buses.

It does appear that a very innovative battery philosophy from Hitachi is emerging.

Yorkshire To See More LNER Services And Longer Trains

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on Rail UK.

These are the two introductory paragraphs.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is meeting an increase in demand from leisure travellers by adding more services and thousands more seats on trains between Yorkshire and London every Sunday.

Sundays are now one of the most popular days for journeys with 30% more customers travelling across the 956-mile LNER network than in 2019.

From December 2023, three new services and longer trains will be introduced on Sundays between London and Yorkshire.

The Hour Change Has Completely Knocked Me Out

Last Saturday, the 29th of October, the clocks went back and I’ve not had a totally good week.

On Tuesday, I couldn’t get dressed, as my gammy left arm and hand didn’t work.

  • I also felt a bit unsteady, as if I’d had a couple of whiskies. But then, I never drink anything more alcoholic, than 0.0% real ale.
  • As there was no-one else, I dialled 999.
  • An ambulance came and took me to the Royal London Hospital, where nothing was found.
  • But as my body  responded to the hospital’s superb air-conditioning, I was allowed to go home.
  • T think the hospital thought I took a taxi, but in reality I took the Overground to Dalston Junction station.

They had suggested, that I should take my planned trip to Doncaster. Which I did!

  • I took a Hitachi Class 800 train to the North.
  • And I took an InterCity225 train home.

Both have air-conditioning that only affects me positively, unlike Class 390 trains, which have put me in hospital before.

On Thursday, I wrote up my trip, or at least the ticketing in An Affordable Trip To Doncaster.

On Friday, I fell asleep on the floor and missed a friend bringing round my washing.

On Saturday, I woke late, went out for lunch and then watched the television.

In the evening, I was tired so went to bed at nine, which is unusual for me.

I got up at nine and did my trip on the Elizabeth Line, which I wrote about in Taking A Train Between Abbey Wood And Ilford Stations On The Lizzie Line.

As a Control Engineer, I tend to believe that the loss of the hour a week ago, has been the cause of my erratic sleeping.

An Affordable Trip To Doncaster

If you want to get a train, the way to not get a cheap ticket was to turn up at the last minute and buy a single ticket to your destination.

But not any more.

On Wednesday, I needed to go to Doncaster.

  • I knew that the latest train, that I could catch to get me to my meeting on time, was the 13:03, so I arrived at Kings Cross about 12:30.
  • I tried to buy on the ticket machine, but I unable to complete the transaction.
  • In the end, I got an Advance Single ticket with my Senior Railcard for £22.60 from the Booking Office.
  • I had two backward-facing seats to myself, as the train, which was going to Leeds wasn’t very full.
  • Coming South later in the day, I repeated the exercise in the Booking Office at Doncaster for £23.85.
  • The train was full, but I did have a seat with a table.

I consider just under fifty pounds to be good value for the return journey.

I’m fairly sure, that this is a method being used by LNER to fill seats. as after all, forty tickets at an average of £25 a time is a grand.

I think we should applaud, what they are doing.

It should be remembered that LNER are facing increasing competition on the route, including against planes to Newcastle and Edinburgh.

I went to King’s Cross this morning and had a play with the ticket machine. I could have bought tickets as follows.

  • Edinburgh – £52.10
    Hull – £27.05
    Leeds – £32.90
    Newcastle – £51.50
    All trains included a seat reservation and left within half an hour.

Note that the Hull ticket was a direct one on Hull Trains, that I could have bought on an LNER machine.

Should The Great Northern And Great Eastern Joint Line Be Electrified?

The Great Northern And Great Eastern Joint Line was created in the Nineteenth Century by the Great Northern Railway and the Great Eastern Railway.

  • The main purpose was to move freight like coal, agricultural products and manufactured goods between Yorkshire and Eastern England.
  • It originally ran between Doncaster and Huntington via Gainsborough, Lincoln, Sleaford, Spalding and March.
  • It had a full length of almost 123 miles.
  • There was a large marshalling yard at Whitemoor near March.

Over the years the line has been pruned a bit and now effectively runs between Doncaster and Peterborough.

  • Trains between Lincoln and March are now routed via Peterborough.
  • It carries upwards of twenty freight trains per day in both directions through Lincoln Central station.
  • Many of the freight trains are going to and from the East Coast ports.
  • The distance between Doncaster and Peterborough is 93.7 miles, as opposed to the 79.6 miles on the East Coast Main Line.
  • The line is not electrified, but it connects to the electrified East Coast Main Line at both ends.

There have been some important developments in recent years.

2015 Freight Upgrade

Wikipedia says this about the major 2015 freight upgrade.

In 2015 a £280 million upgrade of the Joint Line by Network Rail was substantially complete, enabling two freight trains per hour to be diverted from the congested East Coast Main Line; gauge enhancements to enable the passage of 9 ft 6 in (2.90 m) containers were included in the work.

The Sleaford avoiding line had been substantially downgraded since the 1980s and was reinstated to double track as part of the 2015 scheme. Resignalling and modernisation of level crossings was included.

This means that freight trains have an alternative route, that avoids the East Coast Main Line.

Doncaster iPort

Over the last few years the Doncaster iPort has been developed, which is an intermodal rail terminal.

  • It has a size of around 800 acres.
  • The site opened in early 2018.
  • There is a daily train to the Port of Southampton and two daily trains to both Teesport and Felixstowe.
  • The Felixstowe trains would appear to use the Joint Line.

I feel that as the site develops, the Doncaster iPort will generate more traffic on the Joint Line.

There would appear to be plenty of space for expansion.

The Werrington Dive Under

The Werrington Dive Under has been built at a cost of £ 200 million, to remove a bottleneck at the Southern end of the Joint Line, where it connects to the East Coast Main Line.

The Werrington Dive Under was built, so that it could be electrified in the future.

LNER To Lincolnshire

LNER appear to have made a success of a one train per two hours (tp2h) service between London King’s Cross and Lincoln station.

  • LNER have stated, that they want to serve Grimsby and Cleethorpes in the North of the county.
  • North Lincolnshire is becoming important in supporting the wind energy industry in the North Sea.
  • Lincoln is becoming an important university city.
  • Several towns in Lincolnshire probably need a service to Peterborough and London.
  • In 2019, the Port of Grimsby & Immingham was the largest port in the United Kingdom by tonnage.

I can see an expanded Lincolnshire service from LNER.

Full Digital Signalling Of The East Coast Main Line To The South Of Doncaster

This is happening now and it will have a collateral benefits for the Joint Line.

Most passenger and freight trains will also use the East Coast Main Line, if only for a few miles, which will mean they will need to be fitted for the digital signalling.

This could mean that extending full digital signalling to Lincolnshire will not be a challenging project.

Arguments For Electrification

These are possible arguments for electrification.

Electric Freight Trains To And From The North

It would be another stretch of line, that could accommodate electric freight trains.

An Electrified Diversion Route For East Coast Main Line Expresses

Currently, when there is engineering blockades between Doncaster and Peterborough on the East Coast Main Line, the Hitachi Class 800 and Class 802 trains of Hull Trains and LNER are able to divert using their diesel power.

But the electric trains of LNER and Lumo have to be cancelled.

An electrified diversion route would be welcomed by passengers and train companies.

It would also mean that any trains running from King’s Cross to electrified destinations would not to have any diesel engines.

An Electrified Spine Through Lincolnshire

If there was an electrified spine between Doncaster and Peterborough via Gainsborough, Lincoln, Sleaford and Spalding, these stations would be these distances from the spine.

  • Boston – 16.8 miles
  • Cleethorpes – 47.2 miles
  • Grimsby Town – 43.9 miles
  • Market Rasen – 14.8 miles
  • Skegness – 40.7 miles

Note.

  1. These distances are all possible with battery-electric trains.
  2. Charging would be on the electrified spine and at Skegness and Cleethorpes stations.

All of South Lincolnshire and services to Doncaster would use electric trains.

London Services

London services would be via Spalding and join the East Coast Main Line at Werrington.

  • Boston and Skegness would be served from Sleaford, where the train would reverse.
  • Market Rasen, Grimsby Town and Cleethorpes would be served from Lincoln, where the train would reverse.

This would enable Cleethorpes and Skegness to have at least four trains per day to and from London King’s Cross.

North Lincolnshire Services

There are two train services in North Lincolnshire.

Cleethorpes and Barton-on-Humber.

Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport via Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly.

Note.

  1. Cleethorpes would need to have a charger or a few miles of electrification, to charge a train from London.
  2. Doncaster, which is fully electrified is 52.1 miles from Cleethorpes.
  3. Barton-on-Humber is 22.8 miles from Cleethorpes.

Battery-electric trains should be able to handle both services.

Arguments Against Electrification

The only possible arguments against electrification are the disruption that the installation might cause and the unsightly nature of overhead gantries.

Conclusion

The Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Line should be electrified.
