Southbound Thameslink To Eastbound Elizabeth Line At Farringdon Station
I travelled today from St. Pancras International station to Whitechapel station, using the following route.
- Southbound Thameslink service to Farringdon station.
- Eastbound Elizabeth Line service to Whitechapel station.
These pictures show my walk at Farringdon station.
Note.
- I was riding at the back of the train, so I had a long walk to the lifts.
- It would be better to travel in the Southern end of the Thameslink train, as the lifts are at the Southern end of the Southbound Thameslink platform.
- I used the lifts to descend to the Elizabeth Line platforms.
- It is only a short walk between the lifts and the Elizabeth Line trains.
As the last picture indicates, the connecting lifts that I used, can also be used to go from the Southbound Thameslink to the Westbound Elizabeth Line at Farringdon Station.
These connecting lifts can also be used in the reverse direction to go from all Elizabeth Line services to Southbound Thameslink services to London Bridge, East Croydon, Gatwick Airport, Brighton and all the other Southern Thameslink destinations!
If you want to avoid the lifts, as it appears they can busy, you have to climb the stairs to get to the concourse and then descend to get the escalator down to the Elizabeth Line, that I wrote about in Westbound Elizabeth Line To Northbound Thameslink At Farringdon Station.
Conclusion
There would appear to be an imbalance of quality between the connections between the Elizabeth Line and the two Thameslink platforms.
- Those going between the Elizabeth Line and the Northbound Thameslink platform will find it easy, as most of the route is on an escalator.
- On the other hand, those using the Southbound Thameslink platform at busy times could find it congested and slow.
I suspect that regular users of the station, will develop their own routes through the station.
Does The Paddington Bakerloo Line Link Make The Bakerloo Line A NW-SE Cross-Branch Of The Elizabeth Line?
The Elizabeth Line has these major North-South cross-branches.
- Jubilee Line at Bond Street station.
- Charing Cross Branch of the Northern Line at Tottenham Court Road station.
- Thameslink at Farringdon station.
- Bank Branch of the Northern Line at Moorgate station.
- East London Line of the Overground at Whitechapel station.
With the opening of the Paddington Bakerloo Line Link, another North-South cross-branch of the Elizabeth Line has been added.
It could be argued that London has a new NW-SE high frequency link between Harrow & Wealdstone and Abbey Wood stations.
- Bakerloo Line – Harrow & Wealdstone and Paddington
- Paddington Bakerloo Line Link – 165 metre level step-free walk
- Elizabeth Line – Paddington and Abbey Wood via Whitechapel and Canary Wharf
The journey would appear to take 73 minutes from the National Rail journey planner, which allows fifteen minutes for the change at Paddington.
Farringdon Station – 13th February 2022
The two main entrances to Farringdon station have now been finished and the road that runs between them has now been pedestrianised.
Is Farringdon station the only London station with separate entrances for National Rail and the Underground that are on opposite sides of a pedestrianised plaza?
Does it need to have some outdoor cafes in the Summer months?
Spalding Station – 8th September 2021
I’d only ever been through Spalding station a couple of times, but I’d never seen the station, so because I wanted to take some pictures of the completed Werrington Dive Under, I decided to take a train to the station today.
The quality of the station was a welcome surprise.
- It was opened in 1848.
- But it is a Grade II Listed Building.
- It has a very tasteful step-free footbridge totally in-keeping with the rest of the station.
- The Entrance Hall, which I didn’t photograph, was excellent.
I can only fault the station in that it lacks a café or better still a real ale pub. But there is a Sainsbury’s outside the door.
Greengauge 21’s Suggestion, That Thameslink Be Extended To Spalding
In the study by Greengauge 21, which is entitled Connecting East Lincolnshire, this is said.
As noted the Spalding-Peterborough line should be a strong candidate for electrification because of its freight potential, and if so it could also accommodate an extension of Thameslink services from London and the South East to Spalding where interchange would be made with a Spalding–Boston–Louth–Grimsby express bus using the A16.
This Google Map shows the station.
Note.
- The station only has forty-five parking spaces.
- I suspect the express bus could park outside the station.
- There is probably space to the North of the station for a turnback siding.
- Trains seem to take about 21 minutes to cover the 16.6 miles from Peterborough.
There certainly doesn’t seem to be anything that gives a great big No!
What Does High Speed Two Mean By Classic Compatible Trains?
The Classic-Compatible trains are described in this section in Wikipedia, by this sentence.
The classic-compatible trains, capable of high speed but built to a British loading gauge, permitting them to leave the high speed track to join conventional routes such as the West Coast Main Line, Midland Main Line and East Coast Main Line. Such trains would allow running of HS2 services to the north of England and Scotland, although these non-tilting trains would run slower than existing tilting trains on conventional track. HS2 Ltd has stated that, because these trains must be specifically designed for the British network and cannot be bought “off-the-shelf”, these conventional trains were expected to be around 50% more expensive, costing around £40 million per train rather than £27 million for the captive stock.
The Classic-Compatible trains will share these characteristics with the Full-Size trains.
- Maximum speed of 225 mph.
- Cruising speed of 205 mph on High Speed Two.
- Length of 200 metres.
- Ability to work in pairs.
- A passenger capacity around 500-600 passengers.
But what characteristics will the Classic-Compatible trains share with other trains on the UK network?
The Classic-Compatible trains will share some tracks with other trains, according to High Speed Two’s latest plans.
- On the East Coast Main Line, the trains will run between York and Newcastle.
- On the Liverpool Branch between Weaver junction and Liverpool Lime Street station.
- On the Midland Main Line between Clay Cross North junction and Sheffield.
- On the Midland main Line between East Midlands Hub and Bedford.
- On the West Coast Main Line, the trains will run between Crewe and Glasgow.
- On the West Coast Main Line, the trains will run between Stafford and Macclesfield.
As High Speed Two develops, the Classic-Compatible trains could venture off the main routes to places like Aberdeen, Barrow-in-Furness, Blackburn, Blackpool, Cleethorpes, Holyhead, Huddersfield, Inverness, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Scarborough, Stirling and Sunderland.
They will need to be able to go anywhere, which is worthwhile to connect to High Speed Two.
The main restriction is the size of the train and so a Classic-Compatible train probably can’t be larger than the largest train on the UK network, with respect to width, height and to a certain extend length.
Widths of typical trains are as follows.
- Class 319 train – 2.82 metres
- Class 321 train – 2.82 metres
- Class 387 train – 2.80 metres
- Class 700 train – 2.80 metres
- Class 710 train – 2.77 metres
- Class 745 train – 2.72 metres
- Class 800 train – 2.70 metres
- Mark 4 coach – 2.73 metres
Heights of typical trains are as follows.
- Class 319 train – 3.58 metres
- Class 321 train – 3.78 metres
- Class 387 train – 3.77 metres
- Class 710 train – 3.76 metres
- Class 745 train – 3.95 metres
- Mark 4 coach – 3.79 metres
Note.
- I find it odd, that the smallest width is one of the newest trains; Hitachi’s Class 800.
- Length is fairly irrelevant as many trains in the UK are almost 240 metres long.
I suspect that Classic-Compatible trains will have width of between 2.70 and 2.80 metres and a height of around 3.80 metres.
Could A High Speed Two Classic-Compatible Train Go Through The Thameslink Tunnel?
I ask this question, as surely in a post-pandemic world, where we are all flying there may be a case to be made for a train service between the North of England and Gatwick Airport.
But when East Midlands Railway has their new Class 810 trains, it might be possible, if they didn’t use the diesel engines.
Signalling would not be a problem, as in a few years time, all trains will be equipped with the latest digital signalling systems.
If running a Class 810 train, through the tunnel is possible, given that a Classic-Compatible train will not be larger than a Class 810 train, will High Speed Two’s trains be able to cross London in the Thameslink Tunnel?
As Midlands Connect are planning to run a Leeds and Bedford service using High Speed Two Classic-Compatible trains, could this service be extended through the Thameslink Tunnel to Gatwick Airport and Brighton?
I have a feeling that this will be physically possible.
- It would be under the control of the signalling.
- There’s no reason, why a high speed train can’t have a precise low speed performance.
- It would stop at all stations.
- It would use one of the Bedford and Brighton paths on Thameslink
Passengers would like catching a train at a station in Central London and like being whisked all the way to East Midlands Hub and Leeds.
Could A High Speed Two Classic-Compatible Train Go Through The Crossrail Tunnel?
Consider.
- It would surely be possible to arrange tracks at Old Oak Common to allow High Speed Two Classic-Compatible trains to go between High Speed Two and Crossrail.
- Crossrail is considering running to Ebbsfleet.
- It might even be possible to connect in East London.
- The High Speed Two Classic-Compatible trains would be digitally-signalled and controlled through Crossrail without stopping.
- Platform edge doors would ensure safety, but also prevent the trains from stopping at the existing stations.
I have just looked at the London railway map on carto metro, there are stretches of Crossrail under London, where there is space for a station with 200 metre, if not a 400 metre platforms, to the West or East of current Crossrail stations.
- To the West of Bond Street
- To the East of Tottenham Court Road
- To the West of Farringdon
- To the East of Liverpool Street
- To the West of Canary Wharf
- To the East of Canary Wharf
Would all appear to have the required space and be possibilities for extra High Speed Two platforms.
Effectively, some stations would have two sets of platforms on the tracks beside each other.
- One pair of platforms would be the existing station, with platform edge doors compatible with Crossrail’s Class 345 trains.
- The other pair of platforms would be the High Speed Two station, with platform edge doors compatible with High Speed Two Classic-Compatible trains.
- The signalling and train control systems would automatically stop trains in the appropriate platform.
- Extra passageways would link the new platforms to the existing station.
I suspect when Crossrail was designed, the possibility of adding extra stations to the underground section was considered and there is a method of adding extra platforms in Crossrail’s book of cunning engineering ideas.
Conclusion
I don’t rule out a High Speed service between Birmingham and stations in the North of Great Britain and major cities on the Continent.
- Crossrail would be used to link High Speed One and High Speed Two.
- High Speed Two Classic-Compatible trains would be used.
- Stops in London could be Old Oak Common, Bond Street, Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf and Ebbsfleet
It may sound to be a fanciful idea, but I believe it is possible.
An Analysis Of The Train Service On The East Kent Line With Respect To The Three Options For Crossrail To Ebbsfleet (C2E)
Much of the analysis is an update of a post called Up To £3 Billion For Crossrail To Ebbsfleet, that I wrote in June 2019.
Current Services Along The North Kent Line
I shall start by looking at current services on the North Kent Line.
Thameslink – Luton And Rainham (Kent)
A Thameslink service
- Two trains per hour (tph)
- South of the Thames, the service calls at London Bridge, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Whatcombe Park, Charlton, Woolwich Arsenal, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Slade Green, Dartford, Stone Crossing, Greenhithe for Bluewater, Swanscombe, Northfleet, Gravesend, Higham, Strood, Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham.
- Eight-car Class 700 trains work the route, which have a 100 mph operating speed.
- The service calls at Northfleet for a possible interchange with services running from Ebbsfleet International station
- The service calls at Abbey Wood for interchange with Crossrail.
If there needed to be more capacity on this service, I suspect Thameslink could run twelve-car trains.
Southeastern – London Charing Cross And Gravesend
A Southeastern Metro service.
- Two tph
- Calls at Waterloo East, London Bridge, Hither Green, Lee, Mottingham, New Eltham, Sidcup, Albany Park, Bexley, Crayford, Dartford, Stone Crossing, Greenhithe for Bluewater, Swanscombe and Northfleet
- The service calls at Northfleet for a possible interchange with services running from Ebbsfleet International station.
- The service calls at Gravesend for interchange with Southeastern HighSpeed services between St. Pancras International station and North-East Kent, East Kent and soon-to-be East Sussex.
- Class 465 trains work the route, which have a 75 mph operating speed.

My feeling, is that the service would be improved by modern 100 mph trains, as these antique slow-coaches must restrict the speed of faster trains.
Southeastern – London Cannon Street And Dartford Loop Line
A Southeastern Metro service.
- Four tph in both directions.
- Calls at London Bridge, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park, Charlton, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich Arsenal, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Erith and Slade Green.
- Two tph return to Cannon Street via Crayford and Sidcup and two tph return to Cannon Street via Barnehurst and Bexleyheath.
- The service calls at Abbey Wood for a planned interchange with Crossrail.
- Class 465 trains work the route.
As I said with the previous service, these 75 mph trains need replacing with 100 mph trains.
Southeastern – London Charing Cross And Dartford
A Southeastern Metro service.
- Two tph
- Calls at Waterloo East, London Bridge, Lewisham, Blackheath, Charlton, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich Arsenal, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Erith and Slade Green.

Service Frequency Of Option 1
The first option provides for an extension of Crossrail from Abbey Wood to Northfleet/Ebbsfleet and Gravesend, sharing the existing tracks with National Rail services.
- Of the 12 trains per hour (tph) that are planned to run to Abbey Wood. four tph will terminate at each of Abbey Wood, Northfleet/Ebbsfleet and Gravesend.
- Crossrail trains would call at all stations on the North Kent Line between Abbey Wood and Gravesend stations.
This gives a summary as follows.
- Deptford – 6 tph
- Greenwich – 6 tph
- Maze Hill – 6 tph

The second option is to draw out Crossrail from south east London to Dartford using new dedicated tracks built next to the existing North Kent line, with increased rail service frequency between Dartford and Northfleet.
- All the 12 tph, that currently are planned to run ro Abbey Wood, all will terminate at Dartford station.
- Crossrail trains would call at all stations on the North Kent Line between Abbey Wood and Dartford stations.
- I will assume that Southeastern run an extra 4 tph between Dartford and Northfleet.
This gives a summary as follows.
- Deptford – 6 tph
- Greenwich – 6 tph
- Maze Hill – 6 tph
- Westcombe Park – 6 tph
- Charlton – 8 tph
- Woolwich Dockyard – 6 tph

A third option consists of improving the National Rail service between Abbey Wood and Northfleet, combined with a new Bus Rapid Transit service.
- It appears Crossrail services would stay the same at Abbey Wood, with all twelve tph terminating at the station, as are currently planned.
- Southeastern services to Dartford via Abbey Wood would be extended to Northfleet. This would increase the number of Southeastern trains to/from London serving stations between Northfleet and Dartford for connection to Crossrail at Abbey Wood from four to eight tph.
This gives a summary as follows.
- Deptford – 6 tph
- Greenwich – 6 tph
- Maze Hill – 6 tph
- Westcombe Park – 6 tph
- Charlton – 8 tph
- Woolwich Dockyard – 6 tph
- Woolwich Arsenal – 8 tph

Conclusion
I have come to several small conclusions about future services on the North Kent Line.
Improved Signalling
To handle the number of trains required, I am fairly certain that modern digital signalling as used on the central sections of Crossrail and Thameslink, should be installed on the route.
Faster Trains
The operating speed of the North Kent Line is 90 mph, which is not a good fit to the operating speed of the trains.
- Class 375 train – 100 mph
- Class 376 train – 75 mph
- Class 395 train – 100 mph
- Class 465 train – 75 mph
- Class 466 train – 75 mph
- Class 700 train – 100 mph
- Class 707 train – 100 mph
I’m sure that train capacity would be increased if trains could operate at 90 mph or even 100 mph on the route.
Only Option 1 Allows Interchange Between Crossrail And Southeastern HighSpeed Services
Option 1 allows this interchange at Gravesend and it could prove useful, when travelling between North-East Kent and Crossrail stations, including Paddington and Heathrow.
More Services East Of Gravesend
I suspect that there could be extra paths to the East of Gravesend.
These could be either classic or HighSpeed services.
In Kent On The Cusp Of Change – Highspeed Routes, I said this.
The Kent On The Cusp Of Change article in the July 2017 Edition of Modern Railways talks about the Southeastern Highspeed routes through Kent.
Some principles are laid down.
- All six-car services would be extended to twelve-car services.
- Trains could be divided at Ashford International station to serve multiple destinations.
- Maidstone West station would get an hourly Off Peak service.
The article gives an estimate that at least another twenty Class 395 trains are needed of which perhaps three would have batteries for operation along the Marshlink Line between Ashford International and Ore stations.
The new timetable proposed in the article is similar to that now, with the following changes in each hour.
- All Day – A St. Pancras – Ashford – Dover Priory service runs once per hour and splits at Ashford with one six-car train going to and from Hastings and the other six-car train going to and from Dover Priory.
- Off Peak – A new St. Pancras – Ashford – Canterbury West service runs once per hour.
- All Day – A new St. Pancras – Ebbsfleet service runs twice per hour.
- Off Peak – A new St. Pancras – Gravesend – Strood – Maidstone West service runs once per hour.
In addition all trains passing Thanet Parkway station will stop after it opens.
Note.
- Southeastern HighSpeed services will serve Hastings.
- Gravesend gets a second Southeastern HighSpeed service to St. Pancras.
I also wrote Kent On The Cusp Of Change – Fawkham Junction Link, which is about a Network Rail proposal to use Victoria as a second terminal for Southeastern HighSpeed services.
Little has been said about using Victoria as a second terminal, but if it was, it could free up space on the North Kent Lines, which would allow more paths for Crossrail.
Nunhead Junction Improvement
London has a rail capacity problem, for both freight and passenger trains.
This report from Network Rail is entitled The London Rail Freight Strategy (LRFS).
One of the secondary recommendations of the report is to improve Nunhead junction.
The report explains it like this.
Rail freight stakeholders have consistently highlighted Nunhead as a priority location for improving the flow of freight around the London orbital routes. The junction to the immediate east of the station is a flat crossing where two lines of route and multiple passenger and freight services groups converge into the South London Line, creating a pinch point for capacity.
Freight train drivers, when consulted for input into this strategy, flagged the route eastbound from Peckham Rye through Nunhead and towards Lewisham as a challenging section on which to keep heavier trains moving. This is primarily a consequence of the relatively slow permissible speed of 25mph over Nunhead Junction when routed towards Lewisham,
which follows a steadily rising gradient from Peckham Rye.The option proposed by this strategy is for changes to the track alignment in order to increase the speed of the turnout towards Lewisham, as far as can be achieved without affecting the speed of the main route towards Catford. This option would primarily benefit the performance of eastbound freight flowing from the South London Line towards the North Kent lines, one of the key rail freight corridors in the South East, enabling freight trains to run at faster and more consistent speeds towards Lewisham.
This would most likely increase right time presentation at the critical flat junction at Lewisham, as well as assisting the flow of passenger and freight trains to the Catford Loop by ensuring preceding Lewisham-bound traffic can clear Nunhead Junction as quickly as possible.
Addressing the existing constraints to freight traffic through Nunhead, which by their nature most affect the heavier bulk traffic that characterises the North Kent corridor, would also support industry aspirations to maximise the payloads that trains can haul.

Note.
- Nunhead junction is towards the right of the map.
- The lines going to the East go to Lewisham.
- The lines going to the South East go to Crofton Park and Catford.
- I have counted the freight trains through Nunhead junction on real time trains and there can be as main as six trains per hour (tph), through the junction at times, using both Lewisham and Crofton Park routes.
But there would also appear to be plenty of space around the junction to realign the tracks.
As many trains need to go East from Lewisham and there are two flat junctions on the route; Nunhead and Lewisham, anything that improves keeping to schedule is to be welcomed.
The Use Of Electric Haulage
All routes through Nunhead junction have 750 VDC third-rail electrification, but I suspect all freight trains through the junction are diesel hauled.
Real time trains also shows that many of the trains through Nunhead junction also use the West London Line through Shepherd’s Bush.
In Decarbonisation Of London’s Freight Routes, I proposed a dual-voltage battery-electric locomotive to handle freight trains.
Perhaps more capable battery-electric freight locomotives with their better acceleration, are part of the solution at Nunhead junction.
Conclusion
This appears to be a well-thought out solution to one of the problems for freight trains in London.
I also believe that dual-voltage battery-electric locomotives could be part of the solution at Nunhead junction and would also help in many other places on the UK rail network.

Work Has Started At Brent Cross West Station
I was alerted to the fact that work had started at Brent Cross West station by this article on Rail Advent.
The article didn’t say much, except that work had started, track had been moved to allow construction of the £40 million station and the station should open next year.
So I went and had a look.
I took these pictures from a Thameslink train going North through the station site.
I was sitting on the right-hand side of the train and looking to the East.
I then changed trains at Mill Hill Broadway station and took a few more pictures going South.
Again, I was sitting on the right-hand side of the train, but this time looking West.
This Google Map shows the area.
Note.
- The map was probably created a few months ago.
- There is still a shed from the Cricklewood TMD still standing, which I didn’t see.
- The Brent Cross Flyover can be clearly seen in the images and the map.
Work underway includes.
- Creation of the new track layout.
- Building of two wide platforms either side of the tracks i was on.
- The width of the platforms may indicate island platforms.
- Building a temporary footbridge, so workers can cross the tracks.
- There appear to be a support installed for the station footbridge.
One impression, I got today, is that it is a large site and this may enable the building of a relatively simple station.
