Arriving In Liverpool Lime Street Station – 10th May 2025

Liverpool Lime Street station has one of the more spectacular approaches of British railway stations, as these pictures show.

These sections describe the approach.

Crossing The Mersey

You cross the Mersey at Runcorn on the Ethelfreda or Britannia Bridge, which is described in this Wikipedia entry.

It was completed in 1868 and hopefully in a few years, it will be carrying High Speed Two trains between London and Liverpool.

On your right as you cross the Mersey to Liverpool is the Silver Jubilee road bridge, which is a through arch bridge that opened in 1961 to replace a historic transporter bridge. I am just a little bit too young to have seen the transporter bridge.

Further to your right, you can see the Mersey Gateway Bridge, which is a cable-stayed bridge, that opened in 2017 and is described in this Wikipedia entry.

Drax’s Biomass

As you approach Lime Street station, you pass through Edge Hill, where there are the GB Railfreight sidings, where the biomass trains for Drax power station are marshalled for their journey across the Pennines. These Drax trains seem to be one of the few freight trains in the UK, that carry advertising. Tesco trains also do, but their’s is just big letters.

In Do Cummins And Stadler Have a Cunning Plan?, I talked about the possible conversion at some date in the future of GB Railfreight’s new electro-diesel Class 99 locomotives to electro-hydrogen locomotives. These locomotives will surely be ideal for hauling Drax’s biomass trains across the Pennines.

I do believe that these Class 99 locomotives are the future of heavy freight trains in the UK. In Iarnród Éireann Looks At Diesel Loco Replacement Options, I write about speculation, that Stadler may build a version for the Irish.

Through The Edge Hill Cutting

From Edge Hill a deep cutting through the sandstone takes you into Lime Street station.

It looked good in the sun, but the first time I arrived in the city to start my studies at Liverpool University, it was chucking it down and the cutting was very dark and wet.

It was a very different welcome to that, which I got yesterday.

My Train Arrived In Platform 10

Liverpool Lime Street has two cast iron train sheds.

  • The Western shed has platform 1 to 5 and generally handles trains from the East.
  • The Eastern shed has platform 6 to 10 and generally handles trains from the South.

Note.

  1. Changing between trains is just a step-free walk across the station concourse.
  2. Both sections have their own taxi rank and full-size clock.
  3. The Ticket Office is in the Western train shed.

I just walked from my train to the Ticket Office, bought a Lancashire Day Ranger ticket and then walked fifty metres to my next train.

How many stations have such an easy change of trains?

Is Liverpool Lime Street Station Ready For High Speed Two?

Consider.

  • I travelled North in an 11-car Class 390 train, which is 265.3 metres long and can carry 607 passengers.
  • As the last pictures show, the train fitted easily into platform 10.
  • High Speed Two plans to send 200 metre classic-compatible trains to Liverpool Lime Street, with each having a capacity of up to 528.

It looks to me, that these High Speed Two classic-compatible trains will fit into Liverpool Lime Street station, at any platform that currently accepts an eleven-car Class 390 train.

Looking on Real Time trains over the last few days, I’ve found eleven-car Class 390 trains using platforms 9, 10 and 6.

It seems that Network Rail’s engineers have done a superb job to turn the Grade II Listed station, into one of the best operationally.

Could The Silvertown Tunnel Handle More Buses?

In A Return Journey Through The Silvertown Tunnel On A 129 Bus, I took these pictures inside the Silvertown Tunnel when the bus was coming North.

Note.

  1. The left lane is marked Bus Lane.
  2. Only one car is visible in the right lane.
  3. The tunnel seems well-lit.

I have some thoughts

Where’s The Traffic?

It does appear that two apparently empty lanes in each direction, don’t carry a large number of vehicles.

  • Have the tolls and arguments frightened traffic away?
  • Are the tolls too high?
  • From the full set of pictures in the linked post, it would appear more vehicles were using the Blackwall Tunnel.
  • Could it be that drivers are frightened of getting a speeding ticket?
  • Are drivers frightened of sharing the tunnel with buses and heavy trucks?

Both bores of the Silvertown Tunnel seem to have similar traffic levels.

What’s The Capacity Of A Bus Lane?

In the Wikipedia entry for bus lane, this is said.

The busiest bus lane in the United States is the Lincoln Tunnel XBL (exclusive bus lane) along the Lincoln Tunnel Approach and Helix in Hudson County, New Jersey, which carries approximately 700 buses per hour during morning peak times an average of one bus every 5.1 seconds.[ In contrast, the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Hong Kong carries 14,500 buses per day, or an average of about 605 an hour all day (not just peak times), but the bus lane must give way to all the other road users resulting in long queues of buses.

Perhaps a more realistic example of tunnel capacity from the UK, would be the Victoria Line, which handles thirty-six * eight-car trains per hour (tph) in both directions in two tunnels.

I would certainly expect that if Dear Old Vicky can manage 36 x 8-car trains per hour, then the Silvertown tunnel could handle thirty-six buses per hour.

Especially, if the buses had a distance keeping capability, as many trains do.

How Many Buses Per Hour Are Planned to Use The Silvertown And Blackwall Tunnels?

This handy map from Transport for London, shows the three bus routes passing through the Silvertown and Blackwall Tunnels.

The map gives these frequencies for the three bus routes using the tunnels.

Bus Route SL4

Operates once every 8 minutes or at seven buses per hour.

Bus Route 108

Operates once every 10 minutes or at six buses per hour.

Bus Route 129

Operates once every 8 minutes or at seven buses per hour.

Silvertown Tunnel Bicycle Shuttle

Google AI says this.

The Silvertown Tunnel cycle shuttle bus runs approximately every 12 minutes, operating daily from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm, except for Christmas Day, offering a safe and quick way for cyclists to cross the Thames.

This operates at five buses per hour.

Number Of Buses Through The Tunnels

There will be around nineteen buses per hour, through the Silvertown Tunnel and six through the Blackwall.

The Silvertown Tunnel looks like it has been designed to accept more buses.

One thing this means, is that if the Blackwall gets shut, then the 108 can use some of the spare capacity in the Silvertown Tunnel.

Could A Coach Station For Europe Use Some Of The Spare Capacity?

In Development To The West Of The North Entrance Of The Silvertown Tunnel, I displayed this.

This Google Map shows the site to the West of the North entrance of the Silvertown Tunnel.

Note.

  1. The red arrow indicates City Hall.
  2. There is a large site between the DLR and the river.
  3. The Docklands Light Railway separates the site from the North entrance of the Silvertown Tunnel.
  4. The CEMEX Thames Aggregate Wharf seems to occupy part of the site.

This picture shows the North entrance of the Silvertown Tunnel from the cable-car.

It is surely a site with development potential, as Roy Brooks would say.

It will probably be used for more tower blocks along the Thames.

But could it be used for a coach station to handle the increasing number of coaches between London and the Continent?

  • A Docklands Light Railway station could be built to serve the site.
  • Thames Clippers could also serve the site.
  • Coaches could use the Silvertown Tunnel to  start their journey out of the capital.

It is certainly a possibility.

Could The Silvertown Tunnel Be Used For Route-Proving For The Docklands Light Railway?

In TfL Considering Extending DLR As Far As Abbey Wood, I discussed extending the Docklands Light Railway to Thamesmead or Abbey Wood.

This map from Ian Visits shows the area.

Running a four buses per hour service through the Silvertown Tunnel, would be an ideal way of proving what is the best route.

Extending The Docklands Light Railway To The West

No matter how the Docklands Railway is extended to the East, either by physical means like extra branches or by virtual means like connecting to bus routes, this will mean that there will need to be more terminal capacity in the West, to take the pressure off Bank and Tower Gateway stations.

In A Connection Between City Thameslink Station And The Docklands Light Railway, I described a proposal to extend the Docklands Light Railway to Euston, St. Pancras and Victoria.

In the Wikipedia entry for the Docklands Light Railway, there is a section describing a proposed Euston/St. Pancras Extension.

This is said.

In 2011, strategy documents proposed a DLR extension to Euston and St Pancras. Transport for London have considered driving a line from City Thameslink via Holborn north to the rail termini. The main benefit of such an extension would be to broaden the available direct transport links to the Canary Wharf site. It would create a new artery in central London and help relieve the Northern and Circle lines and provide another metro line to serve the High Speed line into Euston.

With all the problems of the funding of Crossrail 2, that I wrote about in Crossrail 2 Review Prompts Fresh Delays, could this extension of the DLR, be a good idea?

Consider.

  • Victoria, Euston and St. Pancras are prosposed Crossrail 2 stations.
  • It would link Canary Wharf and the City of London to Eurostar, Northern and Scottish services and High Speed Two.
  • It would give all of the Docklands Light Railway network access to Thameslink.
  • A pair of well-designed termini at Euston and St. Pancras would probably increase frequency and capacity on the Bank branch of the system.
  • The DLR is getting new higher capacity trains.
  • Bank station is being upgraded with forty percent more passenger capacity.
  • Holborn station is being upgraded and hopefully will be future-proofed for this extension.
  • One big advantage at City Thameslink, is that Thameslink and the proposed DLR extension will cross at right-angles, thus probably making designing a good step-free interchange easier.
  • The Bank Branch of the DLR currently handles 15 tph, but could probably handle more, if they went on to two terminal stations at St Pancras and Victoria..
  • Waterloo and City Line can run at twenty-four tph.

Cinderella she may be, but then she always delivers, when there is a desperate need, just as she did magnificently at the 2012 Olympics.

Something is needed to handle the extra passengers at Euston, that will be brought to London by High Speed Two. Cinderella is the only way to deliver a connection in a reasonable time.

The only problem with this extension of the DLR, is that compared to the rest of the system, the views will be terrible.

For myself and all the others living along the East London Line, with a step-free change at Shadwell, we would get excellent access to Euston, St. Pancras and Victoria.

But could the line still be called the Docklands Light Railway, as it spreads its tentacles further?

Heathrow: Where Was The Redundancy?

In the early 1970s, I was involved in a small way, in the design of chemical plants for ICI.

When designing a chemical plant, you obviously want a plant that will have a high availability, so output is maximised, even if some parts have to be shut down.

With chemical plants, you might duplicate some reaction vessels, pipework or pumps for example.

But surely, when you are designing large infrastructure, it should be designed to keep going.

This document from Network Rail is entitled £140m Transformation Of Liverpool Lime Street Completed On Time.

These bullet points serve as sub-headings.

  •  Track, platform and signalling improvements
  • Paving the way for bigger, better trains with more seats for more customers in future
  • Part of the wider Great North Rail Project
  • Part of #StationsDay – celebrating the £5.2billion investment to regenerate Britain’s rail stations

But I also believe two other important sub-projects were carried out during the work.

The Station Has Been Substantially Prepared For High Speed Two

Consider.

  • Platforms were lengthened so they can accept 265.3-metre long eleven-car Class 390 trains.
  • Platforms were widened, so they could handle the 607 passengers, that can be carried in an eleven-car train.
  • There appears to be five full-size platforms numbered 6-10.
  • Is there the possibility of a sixth platform, which is currently numbered E (for Emergency (?))?
  • The approaches to the station have been remodeled, so trains can enter the station very efficiently.
  • The Class 390 trains are going between Crewe and Liverpool Lime Street stations, in times that are not far off those expected from High Speed Two trains.

As Liverpool Lime Street will only need to handle half-length 200-metre long classic compatible High Speed Two trains, Liverpool Lime Street station is now ready for High Speed Two.

Liverpool Lime Street Station Is Now Effectively Two Five Platform Stations

It is without doubt, one of the best stations aesthetically and operationally in the world.

Thoughts On Tram-Trains In Manchester

The State Of Public Transport In the North

Over the last few years plans have been put in place to improv the state of the public transport of the major cities of the North and progress has started to happen, with new trains, trams and light rail systems being planned and in some cases coming into service.

Birmingham, Coventry And The West Midlands

A lot of investment has been made and it is continuing.

  • Birmingham New Street station has been rebuilt.
  • Coventry and Wolverhampton stations have been remodelled.
  • Two new stations were built in Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games.
  • A large number of new Class 730 local  trains are being brought into service.
  • Birmingham stations are being updated for High Speed Two.
  • The West Midland Metro has been extended at both ends and a second line is under construction.

Transport in the wider West Midlands has been greatly improved.

Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield And The East Midlands

The major investment in this area is the electrification of the Midland Main Line and the provision of new Hitachi electric Class 810 trains.

In addition the following has been done.

  • The Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield has been improved.
  • Derby station has been improved.
  • The local trains have been refurbished.
  • The power supply has been improved.
  • An application for an Open Access service to Sheffield has been made.

The improvements in the East Midlands, will not be on the same scale as in the West Midlands, but they will make a difference.

Leeds, Bradford And West Yorkshire

For decades, West Yorkshire and especially Bradford has lagged behind the rest of the North.

But at least things are stirring.

  • Plans have been laid to create a through station in Bradford.
  • Leeds station has been refurbished.
  • An extra platform is being added at Bradford Forster Square station.
  • The TransPennine Upgrade is underway to electrify between Huddersfield and York.
  • Hitachi have developed a battery-electric high speed train for the TransPennine route.
  • Bradford is installing a hydrogen electrolyser, so that the city can have hydrogen buses to cope with the hills.
  • Plans are now being developed to create a metro for Leeds and Bradford.

West Yorkshire is closing the gap to the rest of the North.

Liverpool And Merseyside

Again, a lot of investment has been made.

  • The approaches to Liverpool Lime Street station have finally been sorted, with more tracks and new signalling.
  • Liverpool Lime Street station has been improved and is now one of the finest stations in Europe.
  • Trains are now approaching High Speed Two times between Crewe and Liverpool.
  • More services between London and Liverpool can now be planned, with the arrival of new Class 807 trains.
  • Some new stations have been built and more are planned.
  • A large number of new Class 777 local  trains are being brought into service.

Transport in the wider Merseyside has been greatly improved.

Newcastle, Tyneside And Northumberland

The area is getting investment, but not as much in proportion as others.

  • The Metro trains are being replaced and the Metro itself, is getting a major update.
  • The East Coast Main Line has received improvements to power supplies, signalling and some bottlenecks.
  • The Northumberland Line to Ashington is being brought back into operation.

It’s a start, but if the Northumberland Line is a success, I can see a call for more line re openings.

Manchester And Greater Manchester

If you look at each of the areas, they generally have one or more large projects.

  • Birmingham, Coventry And The West Midlands – Birmingham New Street station, Class 730 Trains, High Speed Two, West Midland Metro
  • Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield And The East Midlands – Midland Main Line, Class 810 Trains, Hope Valley Line, Open Access To Sheffield
  • Leeds, Bradford And West Yorkshire – Leeds station, Bradford improvements, TransPennine Upgrade, Battery-Ekectric Trains, Leeds Metro
  • Liverpool And Merseyside – Liverpool Lime Street Improvements, Class 807 Trains, Class 777 Trains
  • Newcastle, Tyneside And Northumberland – Metro upgrade with New Trains, Northumberland Line

So what improvements are in the pipeline for Greater Manchester?

These are my detailed thoughts on tram-trains in Greater Manchester,

All Routes Could Be Run By Identical Tram-Trains

If this can be arranged, it is surely preferable from the operator, staff and passengers point-of-view.

Tram-Trains Can Run On Secondary Routes Like The Calder And Hope Valley Lines

In Manchester, this would enable some routes to be swapped from the rail to the tram network.

It would also allow trams to run between networks, so you could have a direct tram service between say Stockport and Sheffield on the Hope Valley Line.

Tram-Trains Can Be Faster

Tram-trains can be faster, when running on rail lines, so they don’t hold up expresses.

What Do Tram-Trains Look Like?

This is one of Sheffield’s Class 399 tram-trains at Rotherham Parkgate.

Note.

  1. This tram-train is a member of the Stadler Citylink family.
  2. this version can be powered by either 750 VDC or 25 KVAC.
  3. The Welsh version will also have battery-power.
  4. It is a three-car tram train.
  5. There is step-free access.

The Wikipedia entry for the Stadler Citylink has lots more details.

Stadler have just launched a new smaller one- or two-car tram-train.

This image from the press release shows the prototype hydrogen-powered one-car RS ZERO.

Note.

  1. The Regio-Shuttles can run as up to seven car trains.
  2. These RS ZERO are powered by overhead electrification, battery or hydrogen power.
  3. They can carry 170 passengers at 75 mph.
  4. They can run as train-trams using the Chemnitz model on compatible tram networks.
  5. The interiors are very flexible.
  6. An RS ZERO can be fitted with toilets for the posher parts of Manchester.
  7. Typically, a one-car RS ZERO handles a similar passenger load to a one-car Metrolink vehicle.

The more I compare the RS ZERO with the Metrolink’s trams, the more it looks like Stadler’s design has a Metrolink order firmly in its sights.

A Simple Tram-Train Example

The Altrincham Line of the Metrolink, runs between Altrincham and Deansgate-Castlefield in Central Manchester.

  • Tram-trains would be capable of sharing the tracks with the current trams.
  • Initially, they would run an identical service to the same destinations in the North.
  • At either Navigation Road or Altrincham stations, they would switch to the heavy rail track.
  • They would then travel to Hale or whatever station is determined to be the terminus.

Tram-trains would be a simple way of extending a tram service along a heavy eail line.

The Range Of The RS ZERO

This article on the Railway Gazette is entitled Prototype RS Zero Hydrogen Or Battery Railcar For Secondary Lines Unveiled At InnoTrans, has this paragraph.

The hydrogen powered RS Zero has a range of more than 700 km in the single car version, and a two-car version would offer more than 1 000 km. Battery trains will offer ranges of 80 to 110 km or 90 to 180 km. The maximum speed is 120 km/h.

As Chester and Manchester is only 45 miles or 72.4 kilometres, ways and means of running the battery versions on the route should be possible.

In fact, as Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly is already electrified at 25 KVAC and a return trip to Manchester Piccadilly from Stockport probably takes about twenty-five minutes, I would envisage that an RS ZERO would leave Stockport for Chester with a full battery. As Stockport and Chester is only 39.2 miles or 63 kilometres, the RS ZERO  should do the trip if it started with a full battery and had a short length of electrification at Chester to top up the battery, if needed.

Other Possible Tram-Train Routes From Stockport

It is indicated the Metrolink would like to run other tram-train routes from Stockport.

  • Ashton – Not sure of the route
  • Buxton – 31.8 km
  • Hazel Grove – 5 km – Electrified
  • Manchester Piccadilly – 9 km – Electrified
  • Manchester Airport – Not sure of the route
  • Sheffield – 59 km – Will be electrified at Sheffield

Note.

  1. This would speed up Sheffield services.
  2. Buxton would be an interesting route and would probably use Newton’s friend to help on the return.

I suspect that nearly all local services from Manchester through Stockport could be run by battery-electric or hydrogen tram-trains.

The Glossop Line Could Be Converted To Tram-Train

It’s already electrified so why not?

Conclusion

It strikes me, that a lot of Manchester’s suburban rail network could be converted to RS ZERO tram-trains.

The RS ZERO  tram-trains could also be used on existing tram routes to convert them to tram-train operation and extend them.

As a bonus Manchester’s trains would be substantially decarbonised.

Plans For Powering Trains And Details Of Our Upcoming Consultation

The title of this post, is the same as that of a news item on the East West Rail web site.

This is the sub heading.

We’re pleased to share plans for how we’ll power trains on East West Rail, as well as information and dates of our public consultation on latest proposals for the project.

These are the first two paragraphs.

As part of our latest proposals, which we’ll be sharing for public consultation from 14 November, we’re providing information on our preference for green traction power in the form of discontinuous electrification with hybrid battery-electric trains, after the Chancellor confirmed government support for the project in yesterday’s budget.

As well as reducing carbon emissions, discontinuous electrification would mean overhead lines would only need to be installed along some sections of the route, which would reduce disruption to existing structures and potentially reduce visual impacts in more sensitive locations on the new railway between Bedford and Cambridge. This option would also cost less than full electrification and would need less land for things such as mast foundations.

There is also a short video, which explains discontinuous electrification.

I feel that to use discontinuous electrification and hybrid battery-electric trains is the way to go on this railway between Oxford and Cambridge.

  • It is a zero-carbon solution.
  • There is electrification at Reading. Didcot, Bletchley, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge along the route, so grid connections will be already available.
  • Sandy, where East West Rail crosses the East Coast Main Line, is fully electrified and must have a grid connection.
  • A small article in the November 2024 Edition of Modern Ralways, says that Hitachi are developing a smaller battery for commuter and suburban trains.
  • Didcot to Oxford could be electrified and there is already a grid connection at Didcot.

Discontinuous electrification could be used to extend East West Rail to Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester.

These are my detailed observations and thoughts.

Existing Electrification

This OpenRailwayMap shows the electrification between Oxford and Bedford.

Note.

The rail lines crossing East West Rail from West to East are as follows.

  • Chiltern Main Line – Not Electrified
  • High Speed Two – Will Be Electrified
  • West Coast Main Line – Electrified
  • Midland Main Line – Electrified

I suspect all lines, except for the Chiltern Main Line, will be able to provide a grid connection for East West Rail.

The rail lines crossing East West Rail from West to East are as follows.

  • Midland Main Line – Electrified
  • East Coast Main Line – Electrified
  • West Anglia Main Line – Electrified

I suspect all lines will be able to provide a grid connection for East West Rail.

Distances Without Electrification

These sections are not electrified.

  • Oxford and Bletchley – 47.2 miles
  • Bletchley and Bedford – 16.5 miles
  • Bedford and Cambridge – 29.2 miles
  • Ely and Norwich – 53.7 miles
  • Norwich and Great Yarmouth – 18.4 miles
  • Cambridge and Haughley Junction – 41.3 miles

I am assuming that the East West Rail could extend past Cambridge on these two routes.

  • Ely, Thetford, Norwich and Great Yarmouth.
  • Newmarket, Bury St. Edmunds, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Manningtree and Colchester.

All sections have electrification at both ends, if Didcot Junction and Oxford is electrified, as is expected to happen.

Train Battery Range Needed

The route layout, I have proposed means that if you go for the battery-electric train with the longest battery range you can afford and it can’t handle Ely and Norwich, the existing electrification can be extended to bridge the gap.

Application Of Discontinuous Electrification To Greater Anglia And Chiltern Railways

If discontinuous electrification can be applied to East West Rail, it can surely be applied to Greater Anglia and Chiltern Railways, given the fact that the route networks of all three companies overlap and share tracks.

Greater Anglia already have a fleet of Class 755 trains, which are designed to be converted to battery-electric operation.

With batteries fitted, I believe that these trains could handle most of the current routes they do now.

The other routes would be handled with selective lengths of overhead electrification in terminal stations to charge the trains before return.

Electrification Between Oxford And Bicester Village Stations

Oxford station has two North-facing bay platforms, that are used by Chiltern and other services terminating at the station from the North.

Note.

  1. Chiltern Railways already run two trains per hour (tph) between these platforms and Marylebone.
  2. I would assume the platforms will be used by East West Rail services, that terminate at Oxford station.
  3. If discontinuous electrification is to be used, then these two platforms could be electrified to charge trains before they return.
  4. East West Rail have not published their proposed services yet, but it could be one tph to both Milton Keynes Central and Bedford stations.

I can see Chiltern buying battery-electric trains to run services between Marylebone and Oxford, and some other routes.

Marylebone and Oxford is 66.7 miles, which is probably two far for even Stadler’s remarkable battery-electric trains, but if say between Oxford and Bicester Village station were to be electrified, would it make it possible to run battery-electric trains between Marylebone and Oxford with charging at both end of the route.

Plans To Turn Former Station Waiting Room Into Pub

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.

This is the sub-heading.

Plans to turn a Grade II listed railway station’s former waiting room back into a pub have been submitted.

These are the first three paragraphs of the article.

Network Rail wants to refurbish the room at Carlisle’s station, which is now a storage room and kitchen.

The first class waiting room, which was until recently used as a pub, was built by architect William Tite in 1880 as an extension to his original 1847 neo-Tudor station designs.

The plans are part of the £27m Carlisle Gateway project to turn the city’s station into a “national interchange” transport hub, funded by central government, Cumberland Council and Network Rail.

I very much like this idea.

Carlisle could be turned into a national interchange, that was almost unique in the world.

  • Rail services across the Borderlands could be improved, to the cities of Glasgow, Lancaster, Leeds, Newcastle and York.
  • Rail services could be developed, so visitors could explore the Lake District by rail.
  • The Eden Project at Morecambe would be a rail-accessible attraction, that was just an hour away from Carlisle.
  • The Borders Railway from Edinburgh could be extended to Carlisle.
  • All services would be zero-carbon, with power coming from either batteries or hydrogen.
  • Services would be tourism-friendly, with space for bicycles, large panoramic windows and high-class catering.

Current times between London and Carlisle could be reduced to under three-and-a-half hours, with reductions of up to an hour, as High Speed Two is eventually delivered.

Could Liverpool Develop A Massive Zero-Carbon Data Centre?

There is an article in The Sunday Times today, which is entitled Google Signs Nuclear Deal To Power AI Data Centres.

These are the first three paragraphs of the article.

Google has struck a deal with a nuclear power start-up to provide low-carbon energy for its data centres and AI operations, marking a world-first in the tech industry.

The California-based company said the agreement to buy energy from multiple small modular reactors developed by Kairos Power could help spur a nuclear revival in America.

The first reactor is scheduled to come online in America by 2030, followed by additional deployments through 2035.

I am not against nuclear-powered data centres, but could Liverpool build a massive zero-carbon data centre?

This Google Map shows Liverpool Bay, which is a vast expanse of water that stretches along the North Wales coast to Anglesey and all the way to the Isle of Man.

Note.

  1. The Isle of Man in the North-West corner.
  2. Liverpool, Birkenhead and the River Mersey in the South-East corner.
  3. Anglesey in the South-West corner.
  4. Blackpool with Morecambe Bay to its North in the North-East corner.

Liverpool Bay could be one of Europe’s zero-carbon energy powerhouses.

Wind Farms In Liverpool Bay

At the present time, these wind farms are producing electricity or planned in Liverpool Bay.

  • Barrow – 90 MW – Commissioned in 2006
  • Burbo Bank – 90 MW – Commissioned in 2007
  • Burbo Bank Extension – 258 MW – Commissioned in 2017
  • Gwynt y Môr – 576 MW – Commissioned in 2015
  • North Hoyle – 60 MW – Commissioned in 2003
  • Ormonde – 150 MW – Commissioned in 2012
  • Rhyl Flats – 90 MW – Commissioned in 2009
  • Walney – 367 MW – Commissioned in 2010
  • Walney Extension – 659 MW – Commissioned in 2018
  • West if Duddon Sands – 389 MW – Commissioned in 2014
  • Awel y Môr – 500 MW – Planned
  • Morecambe – 480 MW – Planned
  • Mona – 1500 MW – Planned
  • Morgan – 1500 MW – Planned

Note.

  1. 2509 MW has been commissioned.
  2. 3980 MW is being planned.
  3. That is a total of 6489 MW

I suspect more space in Liverpool Bay could be developed with wind farms.

Mersey Tidal Power

The Mersey Tidal Power project has a web site.

If it is built, it will probably be built by the South Korean company; K-Water and use some of the design principles of the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station.

It will likely have an output of around 1 GW and take ten years to build.

In the 1970s, I did some project management consultancy for Frederick Snow and Partners, and they showed me their plans for a Severn Barrage.

Their futuristic vision for the Severn Estuary was never built, as the Prime Minister of the time; Harold Wilson, felt coal was the future. See Last Of The Many!

I suspect that the Mersey Tidal Power project will be another variation on a proven theme.

Morecambe Bay Bridge And Tidal Barrage Proposal

In the Wikipedia entry for Morecambe Bay, there is a proposal for a bridge and tidal barrage across the bay, where this is said.

In 2004, a proposal was made to build a bridge across the bay flanked by wind turbines and using tidal power. Proposals from Northern Tidal Power Gateways in 2019 outlined a tidal barrage with a road running along on top.

If the Mersey Tidal Power project is a success, then why wouldn’t one across Morecambe Bay, be one too?

500 MW of zero-carbon tidal power would do nicely!

Nuclear Sites At Calder Hall, Heysham And Wylfa

These three nuclear stations have supplied electricity to the North-West of England.

  • Calder Hall was the original Magnox site, which the Wikipedia entry says had a nameplate capacity of 240 MW and was decommissioned in 2003, after running for 47 years.
  • Heysham is a powerful site which the Wikipedia entry says has a nameplate capacity of 2452 MW and will be decommissioned in 2028.
  • Wylfa is an older, smaller Magnox site which the Wikipedia entry says had a nameplate capacity of 1190MW and was decommissioned in 2015.

As the sites are cleared, I am sure that we’ll see more nuclear power stations built on the sites.

How Much Electricity Does A Data Centre Use?

I found this paragraph in an NESO document.

Regardless of this, if we were to use existing market data and modelling projections, this could point to annual data centre electricity consumptions of between 3.6 TWh in 2020 to as much as 35 TWh by 2050.

Dividing by the hours in a year, indicates that an individual data centre could use between 0.4 and 4 GW of electricity.

Using my rough figures here from wind, tidal and nuclear, I suspect that the power on the Mersey will generate enough power for at least one data centre.

Liverpool Is On The Right Side Of The Country For Cables To North America

Cables will go straight out of Liverpool Bay, pass to the North of Ireland and across the Atlantic to somewhere like Puget Sound.

Liverpool has a superb location for a Transatlantic data centre, that connects to networks on both sides of the pond.

Could Underwater Data Centres Be Developed In Liverpool Bay?

This page on the Microsoft web site is entitled Microsoft Finds Underwater Datacenters Are Reliable, Practical And Use Energy Sustainably

These three paragraphs detail the research.

Earlier this summer, marine specialists reeled up a shipping-container-size datacenter coated in algae, barnacles and sea anemones from the seafloor off Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

The retrieval launched the final phase of a years-long effort that proved the concept of underwater datacenters is feasible, as well as logistically, environmentally and economically practical.

Microsoft’s Project Natick team deployed the Northern Isles datacenter 117 feet deep to the seafloor in spring 2018. For the next two years, team members tested and monitored the performance and reliability of the datacenter’s servers.

I would assume that Microsoft have continued the research, as with something like this you can’t be too careful.

But it would appear, that data centres and their servers could be submerged under the waters of Liverpool Bay.

London And Liverpool Will Be Under Two Hours By Train Within A Year

New Class 807 trains, which will be delivered within a year, will improve the train service between the two cities.

  • Train times will be brought to around or even below two hours.
  • , The extra trains will allow a second hourly service to be added.
  • The extra service will additionally stop at Liverpool South Parkway station, for the airport.
  • High Speed Two is claiming one hour and fifty minutes, between London and Liverpool.

Liverpool already has one of the best rail terminals in the North of England, as these pictures show.

With these service improvements, it will have a service to London and the South, that will be second to no other Northern station.

Liverpool Has A Refurbished Partly-Underground Suburban Railway With New Trains

Liverpool’s Metro is one of the best in Europe for a medium-sized city.

The Metro is also expanding with new routes and stations.

These pictures show the new Headbolt Lane station, which is swerved by the UK’s first battery-electric trains.

Liverpool Has Easy Access To Two International Airports

There are two international airports close by; Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester International.

  • For Liverpool Airport, it’s a bus from Liverpool South Parkway station or an express bus from Liverpool city centre.
  • For Manchester Airport, it’s a train from Lime Street station.

I am fairly sure, that a hydrofoil could connect Liverpool’s Waterfront and the Tidal Barrier to the airport.

North-West England Has A Rich University Tradition

Liverpool, Manchester and the surrounding area has several world-class universities and research establishments.

Some like The Pandemic Institute would be able to find uses for all the computing power and artificial intelligence on offer at a powerful data centre.

Liverpool Is A World City

Liverpool is a World City, where there is plenty of sport, entertainment and things to do.

Conclusion

Liverpool is installing the power infrastructure for a very large data centre, that will be able to handle the world’s largest and most difficult problems.

Extending The Elizabeth Line – Adding Ladbroke Grove Station To The Elizabeth Line

There is a Wikipedia entry for Ladbroke Grove railway station, which starts with this paragraph.

Ladbroke Grove is a proposed railway station in London, England on the Crossrail Route between Old Oak Common and Paddington. This is not part of the internal route and would be added at a later stage. Locals want the station to be called Portobello Central to serve the nearby Portobello Market. It was originally called Kensal.

The Wikipedia entry also gives these details of two proposals for a Ladbroke Grove station on the Elizabeth Line.

Kensington and Chelsea Council has been pushing for a station at North Kensington / Kensal, just to the east of the Old Oak Common railway station site, off Ladbroke Grove and Canal Way, as a turn-back facility will have to be built in the area anyway. Siting it at Kensal Rise, rather than next to Paddington itself, would provide a new station to regenerate the area. Amongst the general public there is a huge amount of support for the project and then-mayor of London Boris Johnson stated that a station would be added if it did not increase Crossrail’s overall cost; in response, Kensington and Chelsea Council agreed to underwrite the projected £33 million cost of a Crossrail station, which was received very well by the residents of the borough. Transport for London (TfL) is conducting a feasibility study on the station and the project is backed by National Grid, retailers Sainsbury’s and Cath Kidston, and Jenny Jones (Green Party member of the London Assembly).

The plans were resurrected by Boris Johnson in 2016.

In March 2017, it was announced that TfL was considering a Crossrail station in Kensal Green, on the site of a former gasworks, and it would be between Old Oak Common and Paddington.

This map from cartometro.com shows the railway lines to the West of Paddington.

Note.

  1. The Elizabeth Line is shown in purple.
  2. Ladbroke Grove rube station is not close to the Elizabeth Line.
  3. Kensal Green tube station is not close to the Elizabeth Line.

But we do know this about the future Old Oak Common station.

  • It will be served by Elizabeth Line services between Central London and Heathrow Airport.
  • It will be served by High Speed Two services between London Euston and the North of England and Scotland.
  • It will be served by Great Western services between London Paddington and the West of England and Wales.
  • It will be served by North London Line services betweeen Stratford and Richmond.
  • It will be served by Heathrow Express services between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport.

From the map, it looks unlikely that the Hammersmith & City Line will be able to serve Old Oak Common station.

However, it might be possible that Euston and Old Oak Common could be served by Watford DC Line services, which called at either Old Oak Common or Kensal Greeen.

A link between Euston and Old Oak Common, would give all stations on the line access to High Speed Two and Heathrow with a change at Old Oak Common.

Some Euston suburban services could stop at Old Oak Common for access to High Speed Two and Heathrow.

The Watford DC Line which is very self-contained could become a comprehensive feeder line for High Speed Two and Heathrow.

Kensal Green Station

I took a trip to Kensal Green station and took these pictures.

Note.

The station handles two heights of trains on single-height platforms.

Some of the stairs are not the best.

There is no step-free access.

There are six lines through the station and there may be scope for more platforms.

If ever there was a station that needed a makeover it is Kensal Green.

Conclusion

I doubt that the Hammersmith & City Line could be connected to the Elizabeth Line to the West of Paddingt9n.

But I do feel that the Watford DC Line could be developed into a comprehensive link between Euston and Old Oak Common satiations.

3rd October 2024 – A Day In Liverpool

A Three-Leg Journey North

This is the second time, I’ve bought one of there journeys North and they are a pain, unless you want to guarantee seats.

I suppose, I should buy my tickets earlier, but if I can buy my rickets on the day on other train companies, I would prefer to do it on Avanti West Coast.

Avanti West Coast’s problem is that they haven’t got their new Class 807 trains into service yet, which will double the services to Liverpool.

T arrived at Warrington Bank Quay on time and the transfer to Newton-le-Willows went smoothly, but then, I waited thirty minutes for my train to Liverpool Lime Street.

This OpenRailwayMap shows the route I took.

Note.

  1. Liverpool Lime Street station is at the Western side of the map.
  2. Newton-le-Willows station is marked by the blue arrow in the top right corner of the map.
  3. Warrington Bank Quay station is in the bottom right corner of the map.

It does seem a round about route, But I got there. Although, I was late.

Hopefully, in a couple of years, you’ll be able to take a local train between Liverpool Lime Street and Newton-le-Willows stations to link up with FirstGroup’s low-cost Lumo Open Access service between Euston and Rochdale.

A Single Journey Home

I was booked home on the 18:43 train from Lime Street, but as you can often do, I asked and was allowed to board the 17:43.

A Crowded And Crazy Euston

I arrived back at Euston at 20:00, but it was crowded, as the station is very much a building site for High Speed Two.

I felt I would treat myself to a taxi, but I couldn’t find any.

So I took a 205 bus along Euston Road to King’s Cross, where I jumped on the the Circle Line for Moorgate.

From there I took my usual 141 bus home.

A friendly station guy at Moorgate, indicated, there might not be any taxis at Euston.

I’d also found earlier, that there were no escalators to the Underground.

Perhaps more than ever, care should be taken at Euston, when getting to and from the station.

It Looks To Me That High Speed Two Has Got Their Planning Wrong At Euston

The big problem at Euston is getting to and from the National Rail station from East or West,

Compare Euston in this respect with Liverpool Street, King’s Cross, St. Pancras or Paddington.

This new entrance to Euston station, should be built first.

All the dithering about High Speed Two seems to have delayed it!

Why The Elizabeth Line Must Be Extended To Ebbsfleet International

There are various plans to link the Elizabeth Line to Ebbsfleet International.

In Elizabeth Line To Ebbsfleet Extension Could Cost £3.2 Billion, I showed this map from the Abbeywood2Ebbsfleet consultation.

There doesn’t appear to be too much new infrastructure, except for a proper connection between Northfleet and Ebbsfleet stations. References on the Internet, say that the similar-sized Luton DART connection at Luton Airport, cost around £225 million.

The Elizabeth Line connects to the following.

  • Bond Street
  • Canary Wharf
  • City of London
  • Farringdon for Thameslink
  • Heathrow Airport
  • Old Oak Common for High Speed Two
  • Liverpool Street station
  • Oxford Street
  • Paddington station
  • Slough for Windsor
  • Tottenham Court Road for the British Museum, Oxford Street, Soho, Theatreland and the Underground.
  • West End of London
  • Whitechapel for the Overground and Underground

For many people like me, the Elizabeth Line at Ebbsfleet will provide one of the quickest ways to get to and from European trains.

High Speed Two Services

Note.

  1. These extra six stations would make High Speed Two, a line for more of the people.
  2. Because the Eastern leg is cancelled, the paths that would have served that leg can be used to provide services for the West of the country.

The East of the country could be served by updating the East Coast Main Line.

The Development Of Eurostar

Consider.

  • Eurostar and Thalys have now merged and I can see them providing extra direct services between London and Europe.
  • Bordeaux, Cologne, Frankfurt and Geneva have been mentioned as possible destinations.
  • Most of the new destinations, will be served by extending current services from Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris appropriately.

But to cope with the extra numbers of passengers, there will have to be extra passenger capacity at St. Pancras and/or Ebbsfleet International.

High Speed Two And Continental Services

Currently, if you want to go from the North of England or Scotland to the Continent, you do one of the following.

  • Take a train to King’s Cross and walk across to St. Pancras International.
  • Take a train to St. Pancras and walk to the International section of the station.
  • Take a train to Euston and walk or take a bus, taxi or Underground to St. Pancras International.

Note.

  1. Passengers from North Wales take the Euston route.
  2. Some passengers will take an Elizabeth Line train to Farringdon and then take Thameslink to St. Pancras International.
  3. Passengers arriving at Paddington on Heathrow Express will probably take a taxi to St. Pancras International.
  4. Passengers arriving at Paddington on a budget will probably take the Underground to St. Pancras International.

For Londoners and those travellers, who know London well, the routes to St. Pancras International, are not to bad but they could be better.

If the current foreshortened High Speed Two or High Speed Two Lite finishes at Old Oak Common station, passengers will have to use the following routes for their onward journey.

  • Elizabeth Line
  • Great Western Railway – local services.
  • Heathrow Express
  • North London Line of the London Overground, or whatever the Mayor at the time calls it.

If the full High Speed Two or High Speed Two Lite finishes at Euston station, passengers will have to use the following routes for their onward journey.

  • Avanti West Coast
  • Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines
  • London North Western – local services
  • Northern Line
  • Victoria Line
  • Watford DC Line of the London Overground, or whatever the Mayor at the time calls it.

These routes will be in addition to those at Old Oak Common station.

There will be two routes between High Speed Two and St. Pancras International station.

  1. Passengers arriving at Old Oak Common will take an Elizabeth Line train to Farringdon and then take Thameslink to St. Pancras International.
  2. Passengers arriving at Euston will walk or take a bus, taxi or Underground to St. Pancras International.

I am not sure that either route will have enough capacity, if High Speed Two attracts a large number of passengers.

Extend High Speed Two To Euston

I believe that this is essential, as it improves the connectivity greatly, at the bottom end of High Speed Two, as several Underground Lines will be connected to High Speed Two.

Extend The Elizabeth Line from Old Oak Common To Ebbsfleet International

I believe this too is essential, as it gives the North of England and Scotland, the connection to the Continent that they need.

There could be cross-platform connections at both Old Oak Common and Ebbsfleet International between the Elizabeth Line and the high speed lines.

Conclusion

Politicians should stop the dithering and act to give the UK, the rail connection it needs up and down the country and to the Continent.
