My First Ride In A Nova 3 Train

Nova 3 is the name that TransPennine Express have given to their new fleet of Mark 5A coaches hauled by Class 68 locomotives.

The first few pictures were taken, when I saw a Nova 3 at Manchester Victoria station and the ither during and after a ride between Manchester Victoria and Leeds stations.

These are a few of my thoughts.

Comfort, Noise And Vibration

It was certainly good and up there with the best.

Tables For Four

There were quite a few tables, but not everyone got one.

Ride And Performance

There was nothing wrong with the ride, but we were only doing 75 mph across the Pennines.

Next time, I’m in the North, I’ll take one of these trains up the East Coast Main Line to Scarborough or Redcar to feel them at a faster speed.

Conclusion

I wouldn’t object to having these coaches with a Class 88 electric locomotive running between London and Nowich via Ipswich.

  1. I thought London to Norwich via Ipswich was going to get the longer (10 carriage?) Electric only version on the Stadler FLIRT and therefore other possibilities are effectively irrelevant.

But would be nice for longer distance east west serviced from Norwich..was on a very overcrowded and poorly equipped 2 carriage DMU operated by EMR from Norwich a couple of days ago..fortunately only for an hour to Ely but pretty grim for anyone travelling much further let alone the 5+ hours to Liverpool.

    • I was only using it as an example. I’ve seen the new Class 745 trains under test and they look good and very long with twelve carriages.
Abellio Greater Anglia have bought a large number of 755 trains. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some working AbellioEadt Midlands Railway route between Norwich and Nottingham. It would be so much easier operationally, if trains and staff were supplied from Crown Point!

A Class 755 train could use about fifty miles of electrification.

Nottingham and Licerpool is being given to another operator.

  2. I liked my trip (Victoria to Seamer near Scarborough) on one back in September. Better than the 185s at everything I think other than seat comfort which was still acceptable.
