Scaled Back Hajj Pilgrimage Due To Start In Saudi Arabia

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on the BBC.

Quite frankly, I was very surprised, when I heard this news on the BBC.

I thought, the Hajj would have been cancelled and not just scaled back.

In the past, I have had vicars as friends and I have talked to devout Orthodox Jews, and we have discussed serious moral dilemmas.

I can remember some from both groups saying, that your health always comes first.

In the current pandemic, the Church of England and prominent Jews like the Chief Rabbi have behaved with ultra-caution.

So where is this caution from the Muslim religious leaders?

I hope the Government and other political leaders, are giving them the truth, as they are endangering us all!

  1. Usually around 2millions from around the world attend the Hajj. This year only people from within Saudi Arabia will attend, around 10,000 pilgrims. I think they should be pretty safe overall.

  2. I agree with Maurice, people from UK aren’t allowed to go, the trips, flights, accommodation etc are all cancelled. Locally there is upset about it – Muslims are supposed to make Hajj at least once in their lifetime, and some of them save for many years. But 10,000 is still a very large number of people, and having seen the images on TV of people walking around tomb there isn’t a lot of space for social distancing. I don’t know how Hajj is organised, are people given a time and date to visit the tomb, or is it a bit of a free for all? Hopefully people from UK won’t try and find a way to get there, or get back, via several countries which they are allowed to return to UK without quarantine.
