RSSB Appoint Arup To Review Hydrogen Trains

The title of this post is the same as that of this article on Rail Technology Magazine.

This is the first two paragraphs.

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has tasked Arup with developing a case for hydrogen-powered trains on the Great Britain (GB) mainline.

The review will move to establish a high-level operational concept, any relevant operational hazards and obligations of regulation.

This must be good forward thinking.

  1. Proper research & testing needs yo be done to check the viability of hydrogen trains. Running a hydrogen engine just creates water for the exhaust. Cracking h2o to extract the hydrogen however needs electricity which in turn needs some fossil fuel or bio-mass to generate it.

    • I feel that the major hydrogen research will be done by Hyandai, as they develop their hydrogen powered trucks.

The Americans have sUd they will create hydrogen by electrolysis powered by solar. The Dutch will use massive wind farms in the North Sea and generate the gas offshore. It will then be piped to the shore using the redundant pipes, that serve work-out gas fields. Recently, there has been great improvement in the electrolysis of water and brine.
