North And South

I went to see Spurs this afternoon to see them play Burnley.

Coming home, I got the train between White Hart Lane and Hackney Downs stations. As we walked to the bus for Dalston, there was a mixed group of fans.

Most of the Burnley fans were smoking, as opposed to few of the Spurs fans.

Is this the difference between North and South?

  2. Not so much north south exactly, but a marker of social deprivation

  3. Not so much a North and South thing, perhaps more a culture of the towns concerned. There is some bias here – we used to live in Burnley, lovely people there, lots of friends, and a kind and caring place. We have also lived in the South, hated it, people unfriendly, especially to northerners such as ourselves. They looked down on Northerners as being somehow ill educated, uncultured, low intellect etc. We couldn’t wait to move back up here, in we seriously considered moving to Burnley when Neil got a job up here, but the journey to work would have been pretty grim. So we bought the house we are still in nearly 32 years later, and we are happy here.

Of course with house prices as they are down in the South, and as cost of living is higher, then probably the the Spurs fans can’t afford to smoke 😉

I should add that I hate to see people smoking, and I don’t allow it in my house or my car. Very very few of our friends smoke tobacco. Our younger daughter smoked for a while in her teens, long story as to how she got started with the habit. We were very unhappy about it, she wasn’t allowed to smoke in the house, she either had to go to the bottom of of the garden, or to sit at the bus stop near our house if it was raining – and she didnt want to get wet. She stopped very soon after leaving university, and has never picked up since.
