How do We get Drugs out of the Music Business?

Yesterday we had the tragic death of Whitney Houston.  Not necessarily from drugs, as we don’t know yet.  But it does seem that every star in the music business seems to have fought addiction at some time.  And in many cases, it’s killed them or assisted them on their way!

They set a very bad example to young people! And to everyone in fact!

But last night at the Grammys did anybody speak up against drugs? Not that I have seen in any report! They gave Whitney Houston a tribute, but didn’t say how stupid she was to get involved in drugs and alcohol.

  1. I wish it were that simple James. With 13 years recovery in 12 step fellowships, I know a lot of people in reovery from drugs and alcohol, some of whom have become good friend, and some of whom are or have been household names.

I am sure you dont want me to write a 5,000 word essay about addiction issues on your blog, but I can assure you that it is not stupidity which causes the addictions, it is the pressure they are under added to spiritual bankruptcy. Plus many people who become very successful have a personality type which lends itself to addiction; their addictive personality type will actually have helped them reach the top, because they will have become addicted to their singing, playing instruments, acting, football, politics etc.

Step 12 of AA, NA, CA etc says:

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other alcoholics/addicts etc, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

In sport many of the people who have good 12 step recovery from their alcohol and addiction issues mentor rising stars and do a good job of preventing these problems. The music business perhaps needs similiar mentoring schemes.
