Artificial Photosynthesis Offers Clean Source Of Hydrogen

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article on The Engineer.

This is the first paragraph.

Devices made using conventional semiconductor technologies could make hydrogen using just fresh or saltwater and sunlight.

It would appear to be an interesting concept, but after reading the article, there is still a lot of research and development to be done before it is an affordable proposition.

But I do feel, it could be one of those technologies that are commonplace in a few decades.

  1. It would be good if a cheaper non-polluting method of ‘cracking’ H2O to get hydrogen were found. Burning gas or oil to produce enough electricity to do it just negates the reason for doing it but, if extracting hydrogen can be done in a non-polluting process and the extracted oxygen just released to the atmosphere then we are effectively quids in. Assuming the big oil companies don’t try and crush the idea. The great thing about burning hydrogen in an engine is that you just get water for exhaust. Got to be a no-brainer.

    • You don’t need a conventional engine, you just use a fuel cell. And these are getting more powerful!
