Any Politician Who Advocates A Circuit Breaker Is Ignoring The Dynamics

As a Control Engineer, trying to control things with an on-off control like a circuit breaker is like trying to ride a bike only turning hard left or hard right.

We need to apply lots of small actions to nudge the pandemic to a safe equilibrium with the UK population.

  • A small action, I would do is shut betting shops, as this can be done on-line and most are owned by big groups, so commercial damage wouldn’t be great. Some staff surely could be redeployed.
  • I would also close down all religious services with more than six people. Obviously, God is working on a bigger project at the moment and is too busy to help with the pandemic.
  • I would also encourage working from home where possible, as that has been shown to reduce spread.

But perhaps we need to take some serious dramatic action.

Why not release the latest James Bond film on a Saturday evening on free-to-air television? And do it worldwide, except to China!

It wouldn’t do the cinemas any good, but if they got on with the next one, if this one is any good, everybody will flock to see it.

  1. Sensible suggestions there.

Betting shops often look very full if you walk past when the door is open. I have never been in one, so don’t know what it is like inside.

Religious services should never had been opened when they were. And quite a few are now going to zoom only again.

And working from home – at present our younger daughter and her partner are working from home, have been since March. Neil always works from home, unless he has to go visit a site – which he has done a couple of times but only since the start of October.

The film one is interesting. It hadn’t occurred to me that showing something really good on TV would keep people out of pubs and restaurants.

We are in Tier 2 in Manchester. Don’t know why, we should be in Tier 3 as Liverpool is.

  2. Northern Ireland has just announced a lockdown which closes pubs but not churches making me wonder if we have a new generation of prohibition politicians!

It’s said only a few percent of cases has been linked to pubs and restaurants where large sums have been spent on making premises Covid secure .

We even have politicians in Essex begging to be put in a higher band !

One oddity is theatres remain shut along with open air football stadiums yet an event linked to Arsenal Wenger was held inside the Palladium theatre the other night !

Perhaps closed theatres are further evidence of Puritans in control ?

    • You make some good points. I’m a great believer in doing simple experiments and seeing what happens. Suppose we allow some small theatres to put on shows and see what happens.
