Is The UK Ready For A Tourist Boom This Summer?

Imagine one scenario, where we continue to vaccinate against Covid-19 and and large parts of the EU doesn’t, or at least goes slower and slower because of reluctance to use the AstraZeneca vaccine.

A simple mathematical model could mean that our number of cases drops like a stone and the anti-AZ countries suffer successive waves of the covids.

Where will vaccinated well-off North American, Antipodean and Far Eastern tourists want to go for their dose of European culture?

  1. It’s worth remembering how this virus has an ability to mutate and so perhaps until we understand more about how well protected vaccination makes people we might be better off using our island status to remain isolated and concentrate on rebuilding our economy.

Just think of all the venues and attractions where people avoid because they are full of foreign tourists so 2021 could be the year to revisit the attractions you last visited when you were on school visits maybe half a century ago !

I suppose one possibility would be for The Crick Institute to set up a vaccination station on that large unused area at the end of Eurostar platforms at St Pancras International and offer vaccinations at a price to Europeans who would use Eurostar to simply travel in and out of St Pancras without leaving this area . I’m sure some people would be prepared to pay for vaccinations and they could help get Eurostar back up and running!

  3. As for virus variants, I believe they are testing AstraZeneca ver2 and it could be ready for use late summer. It is possible that it could be a available as a booster for those of us who will have had 2 shots.

  4. I haven’t read in depth anything about the AZ and the blood clots, because I have had my first AZ, am fine, and anyway I am on blood thinners. What we don’t know about these Scandinavians who developed clots is whether they already had a predisposition to clotting, whether they are related to each other in any way, whether they had the same batch of AZ. And probably lots of other factors that I haven’t thought of.

So being a cynic, I wonder if the whole thing is political. UK is doing well and Europe aren’t pleased about it.

I have chronic leukaemia, and Leukaemia Care have been brilliant at keeping us informed about all these things – and the guy in charge of the AZ project spoke at a webinar explaining how it was produced, how it works and why it is safe. The recent item in the news about it not working for people with blood cancers was flawed beyond belief – tiny sample of cancer patients, only 5 had blood cancers, and some of those were still on treatment – and didnt have the same form or blood cancer as each other.

My concern with the Pfizer was the -80 degrees storage temp – and worrying that it hadn’t been kept at the right temperature prior to use.

I will be shielding until 4 weeks after 2nd vaccine, as instructed by medics.

  5. Because I take the daily rat poison after my stroke and for the past six years, I’ve taken my own INR, I have detailed readings before and after my 1st injection. They appear to have dropped to 2.1 after the first and now they are around 2.8. But they’ve been all over the place during the pandemic.
