Putin Burns $10m Of Gas A Day In Energy War With The West

The title of this post, is the same as that of this article in The Times.

This is the first paragraph.

Russia is burning off an estimated $10 million of natural gas a day from a single plant, leading to accusations that President Putin is deploying his country’s vast energy reserves as a weapon against Europe.

It just showed the sort of idiot we’re dealing with!

  • He doesn’t care about the planet.
  • He’s effectively burning his country’s cash reserves.
  • He’s spurring Western engineers on, to on the one hand find ways to beat him and on the other to find ways to make our gas go further, so we don’t need to buy his bloodstained gas.
  • If he thinks, that he might provoke a war with Finland, I suspect the Finns are too bright for that.

They’ll be waiting and if the Russian Army should invade, they’ll get the kicking of a lifetime, just like Stalin’s thugs did in the Winter War of 1939-1940.

  1. He is certainly an idiot. I saw on the news yesterday evening the photo of the huge orange flaming area where they are burning it. The news said that there are concerns that the great heat caused by it could melt some parts of the polar ice cap which are quite near to it. There are people in UK, and no doubt other places, who are terrified of the fuel bills they will be getting. Neil and I are fortunate not to be in that position. And Putin is making the whole situation worse.

  2. We used flare off vast amounts of gas in the North Sea as did most oil producers until it became a more valuable product.

    • The latest trend in the North Sea is replacing gas turbines on the rigs, that are used to generate power for the rig, with a connection to a local renewable energy source.

      • Norways Equinor has done that on quite a scale to the extent that its become a factor in how much electricity they might be able to export over the interconnectors to their European neighbours due to the extra demand now placed on their national grid with the hydro reservoirs being lower than the five year average.. As my old man used to say “the law of unintended outcomes”.

Anyhow certainly makes sense that with the newer windfarms being much further out that the rigs are connected to their offshore substations.

  3. As insane as the latest example is Russia has been leading the practice of flaring of gas for years.
According to the energymonitor website….”New (2021) data from the World Bank reveals that worldwide gas flaring rose marginally to 143 billion cubic metres (bcm) last year. That equates to roughly 93% of Europe’s gas purchases from Russia. Another way to look at it is that those 143bcm could have generated some 1,800 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, almost two-thirds of the EU’s net domestic power generation, according to the World Bank.

If you add in the flaring of petroleum liquids and the venting and leaking of methane from oil and gas infrastructure, the amount of primary energy wasted by the oil industry comes to a staggering 264bcm of gas-equivalent – roughly 1.7 times Europe’s total Russian gas imports in 2021, or 7% of the entire world’s natural gas consumption”
