Ulster Says No!

Twas ever thus! This article on Wikipedia, is about the protests against the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement between Margaret Thatcher and Garret FitzGerald.

Let’s face it! Many of the views of the Democratic Unionist Party are very alien to this left-wing Tory voter.

For a start, I have known, three women in the UK, who might have decided to have an abortion for three different reasons. All of their reasons would have been illegal in Northern Ireland, but perfectly legal in the rest of the UK and most of Europe.

In this and several other areas, such as same-sex marriage, Northern Ireland must be brought in line with the rest of the UK.

  1. I am inclined to agree, they do need to decide whether they want to be part of UK and under UK law, part of Southern Ireland and under their laws, or try and be a little tiny state themselves. The whole situation with the Irish border should have been made for more public in the whole of UK in the lead up to Brexit; most solutions may threaten peace process. This is not good at all.

  2. Odd really the DUP want alignment with the UK, but on corporation tax, abortion, divorce, homosexuality, gay marriage they have stayed in closer alignment with the republic than GB – hypocrites

    • I wonder what the result of an English, Scottish and Welsh referendum on giving Northern Ireland to the Republic would be?

      • I would rather have an English referendum about seceding Wales…

  3. Suffolk would vote yes to build a wall on the border with Norfolk!

And there’s always the time, I rode in a train from Manchester Victoria to Blackburn via Todmodern with a BBC Radio Lancashire presenter, who was slagging off Yorkshire, as we kept crossing the county border.
